Morecambe 1 - 0 Cheltenham Town
League Two: 21st November 2009
No win in over two months and only the existence of more abysmal teams than Cheltenham keep them
out of the relegation zone. Evidently they were the poorer of two poor sides this afternoon going
down to a goal from a player allowed to run half the length of the pitch without let or hindrance.

There are a few things we learned from the frustrating result Thursday. In ways they will
influence how we watch and appreciate the Sounders performance on the road next Sunday. In other
ways, they may be the same learnings that Sigi had in watching the film twice before an 11:30AM
practice Friday.

Well, more suffering for fans at Qwest. It's beyond a cliché to say that MLS referring is
subpar, but there were two hugely controversial calls that will soon be reverberating over the
interwebs. First is Onstad getting off with just a yellow. It's hard to see how that's not a red,
and the Montero yellow is also mystifying.

World Cup participants Slovakia and Denmark and it is growing increasingly difficult to project
just who will be playing in central defense for the United States when those matches take

I haven't done interviews for a while. My full time job had been at its peak, but now with a
slight tailing off and the Sounders in the Playoffs I hope to get you a few interviews.
First up is Steve Zakuani. Rookie of the Year candidate, fan favorite and a threat along that
left side. We talked via phone and any errors in the conversation are due to my efforts at
transcription.

Of all the MLS post-season awards up for grabs, there may be no tougher one to call than 2009
MLS Defender of the Year.
Last season, Chad Marshall was the clear-cut winner, topping a strong field of candidates with a

Excuses, excuses.
We can talk about Robbie Rogers having a bad ankle.
We can talk about not having Chad Marshall or Frankie Hejduk.
We can talk about not having the right guys in the starting 11.
We can talk about the opposing team turning the penalty spot into a divot.

It's all going well for the Columbus Crew at the moment. After their stumbling start to 2009,
things have long been smoothed out as the team clinched a playoff spot after the weekend's
results. The Crew have an opportunity to further their international pedigree with a win against
Deportivo Saprissa tonight (8pm, FSC), which would lock up second place in Group C and advance them
through to the Champions League quarterfinals.

What is this, Groundhog Day? Yeah, it was real fun flying back to Seattle . . . then flying out
here . . . then we'll fly back to Seattle . . . then a home game against Chivas and three straight
away games against Revs, Crew and KC. Yeah, we're going to come out of that alive. Creepy Jose
points out that we really can't afford to lose but one of these games, to which my response is,
we're going to lose more than one.

Tuesday's opening game between these familiar foes once again left both coaches counseling
patience. Nothing is ever as it seems when these two teams meet, and while Greenwood's players
walked off with smiles and congratulations following their win, last years results were still fresh
in the minds of the coaches.

MLS Rumors 18 August @ 10:33 AM EST
This man is feeling much better recently.
In the video below, having the swine flu was not that big a deal. It was just like any other flu.
In fact, he wanted to play more and in the first half of the match vs Seattle, but wasn't brought
on until later. He also believed that Marshall should have been carded much earlier.

Columbus Crew defender Chad Marshall's 10th minute goal against FC Dallas earned him Player of the
Week honors for Week 22. This is his first Player of the Week award. Also on Monday, Chivas USA

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki.

•In Major League Soccer, Conor Casey and Omar Cummings had fantastic nights in the 4-0 win over
fading Chivas USA. But you can see that from reading the box scores. What you won't see is that
Columbus Crew center back Chad Marshall and Real Salt Lake center back Jamison Olave had big
nights, too, cops [.

The Black and Gold will travel to San Jose this weekend for what is called the Night of
Champions. The Crew and San Jose Earthquakes will play the first MLS game ever at San Francisco's
Candlestick Park. Following that match FC Barcelona and Mexico's Chivas de Guadalajara will face
off. Once again the Crew will be missing their leading scorer Guillermo Barros Schelotto as well as
defender Frankie Hejduk.

The Crew defense dammed up the Rapids offense and the difference in the game was a couple of inches
between the two keepers. Late in the first half Cory Gibbs committed an unnecessary (and
admittedly, somewhat ticky-tack from what we could see on TV) foul near the top of the box. Chad
Marshall lined up the free kick and put it on net.

I have hesitated for days now when it came to posting this blog. I usually pride myself on timely
thoughts on games. Television can give you an altered view of many elements of a game. Things such
as tactics, formations, play off the ball and emotional elements such as momentum can be lost in a
telecast.
