Markus Halsti will always be a "what could have been" for a lot of fans.

Markus Halsti is no longer a D.C. United player. We've speculated about this possibility going back to last winter, and the talk only got louder and more persistent as the defensive midfielder went through the first 12 games of this MLS season without playing a minute.

The Finn will miss United's next two matches

D.C. United will also be without Markus Halsti for Friday's game at Sporting Kansas City and next Wednesday's home game against the Seattle Sounders. He's been called in by Finland and will play two friendlies with the Huuhkajat. Halsti broke the news himself last night:

The 32-year old Halsti is part of a Finland squad (coached by former New York Red Bulls coach Hans Backe) that will play friendlies with two sides preparing for the Euro 2016 tournament.

To make room for a new striker, United clears a roster and international roster spot

To make room for new signing Alhaji Kamara, D.C. United has confirmed to Black & Red United that they have released Paul Clowes. The team needed to free up both a roster spot and an international roster spot, and with starters Marcelo Sarvas and Nick DeLeon, as well as reserves Jared Jeffrey, Markus Halsti, Rob Vincent, and Julian Buescher all ahead of Clowes in central midfield, this is the move that had to happen.

Can Markus Halsti own the central midfield this year?

Last year, Markus Halsti was D.C. United's big offseason signing, coming from Malmo and the UEFA Champions League to D.C. Unfortunately, he got hurt during the preseason and, by the team he was healthy, the Davy Arnaud-Perry Kitchen partnership was working too well to disrupt and schedule congestion kept him with the second team.

D.C. United 2016 Countdown: 25 days - Will Jared Jeffrey still wear Black and Red at First Kick?

We speculate on Jared Jeffrey's future, if there is one, with D.C.

When we looked at D.C. United midfielder Jared Jeffrey last month in our season review series, we thought there may have been a tiny bit of optimism for him, in the sense that Perry Kitchen, who served as the top of the central defensive midfielder depth chart, would be seeking greener pastures in Europe and, combined with Davy Arnaud attempting to recover from an injury, would open up a bit of breathing room for Jeffrey to show off his wares, especially with an uneven 2015 campaign by Markus Halsti.

The little-used midfielder goes under the microscope.

When Markus Halsti was signed by D.C. United, adding another veteran presence in the midfield would come at a cost to someone, and that cost fell to Jared Jeffrey. After playing in 10 regular season games in each of the 2013 and 2014 seasons, Jeffrey appeared in two games in 2015, with one appearance as an 89th minute sub in April, and a May road start against the Portland Timbers where he played 60 minutes.
