Djibril Cisse could never be described as a shrinking violet, so it will come as little surprise
that the former Liverpool man was once again the centre of attention at Loftus Road, albeit for all
the wrong reasons.
According to the laws of the game, shouldn't Robin Van Persie have been sent off against
Manchester United in Arsenal's 2-1 loss on Sunday? I know when it comes to yellow and red cards
it's often pretty hard to keep track of all of football's strange rules. But it's widely believed
that an automatic yellow card is to be shown to any player who lifts his team shirt to reveal a
printed message on a tee-shirt below.
Referee Mark Clattenburg's attempts to join a Stoke counter-attack were cynically thwarted by this
challenge from Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor. The Villa man escaped without a booking.
Luckily for him, Clattenburg's hair transplant escaped unscathed otherwise it would have been a red
card offence.

Graham Poll: Referees turning into Christmas Turkeys?
It was the referees' Christmas party on Monday. While they were tucking into their turkey dinner,
Mark Clattenburg was missing a stonewall penalty at Stamford Bridge. Can a week pass without
another poor decision?

Two top-flight refs, who shall of course remain fatherless, cost me a small fortune over the
weekend and the soundtrack to this season has been the chant of, ‘You don't know what you're
doing.
By Chris Wright
There was an incident that was missed by referee Mark Clattenburg during the first half of
Chelsea's 2-1 win over Man City at the Bridge last night that has sparked a fair bit of debate in
internet circles this morning, despite not really being mentioned in the national press, in which
Yaya Toure both 'kicked' ('nudged' being a fairer assessment) Juan Mata as he sat on the turf then
slapped the Spaniard around the head for good measure a few minutes later.
It may sound odd to call a four goal win unspectacular, but that is exactly what it was. And
exactly what you want from Arsenal when facing the worst club in the Premier League. It may sound
negative, but it's possibly the best thing you can say about today's match.
Arsenal would line up exactly how Brenton described we would in the preview yesterday showing
you exactly why you should be reading the match previews.

Arsene Wenger has revealed that when he first started Robin van Persie assume the responsibility
of becoming the club's skipper, he did not feel that the Dutchman was a typical leader.
However, the Arsenal manager now believes that with the passage of time, van Persie has fit into
the role very well and despite not being very vocal, he has complete control over the Gunners
dressing room.

So, that was a bit better, eh? The corner remains unturned, our backness on the track has yet to
be determined, but we needed a performance and a result to at least start the confidence trickling
back and we got that.
The only things worth talking about from the first half were a fantastic Szczesny save in the
early minutes (that's quite a nice habit he's developing, even if you do wish we wouldn't allow the
chances), a van Persie free kick curled just wide, and a Gervinho shot which whistled not far over
the bar.

Match Preview: Tottenham vs Liverpool
Liverpool travel to White Hart Lane this weekend looking to bounce back from defeat against
Stoke. Jonathan Walters' first half penalty ensured that the Reds crashed to their first defeat of
the season and they will be eager to avoid a second at a ground which has not been a happy place
for them in recent seasons.
Stoke boss Tony Pulis has admitted Liverpool should have been awarded a penalty in their win over
the Reds.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish was left fuming with a number of decisions that went against his side
at the Britannia Stadium and is considering making a formal complaint to manager of the
Professional Game Match Officials Board Mike Riley about the standard of refereeing.
Liverpool FC will be disappointed but not downhearted after their defeat at Stoke City.
The manner of the loss was a world apart from the miserable way in which they went down at the
Britannia Stadium last season.
Kenny Dalglish has got a gripe about the decisions of referee Mark Clattenburg.
Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to banish the memory of their 1-0 defeat at Stoke City when
they travel to Tottenham next Sunday.
The Reds' unbeaten start to the season was ended in controversial fashion at the Britannia Stadium
on Saturday.
Referee Mark Clattenburg awarded Stoke a dubious penalty when Carragher was harshly adjudged to
have brought down Jon Walters.
Graham Poll: Kenny Dalglish should blame Liverpool's strikers and not referee Mark

It was Dalglish's strikers' profligacy in front of goal which cost him not some ridiculous
referees' conspiracy theory.

Walters converts his penalty for Stoke... Despite 24 shots at goal Liverpool could do nothing
yesterday to break through the brick wall of Stoke's defence at the Britannia. The home side put
themselves in front with a penalty early on and never looked back. Tony Pulis' boys continue their
unbeaten run in their fantastic start to the Premier League season.

Stoke City 1-0 Liverpool: Walters penalty ends Reds' unbeaten run
Liverpool's unbeaten start to the 2011-12 season was ended at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday
afternoon, as they were beaten 1-0 by Stoke City. The only goal of an exciting Premier League
contest arrived in the 21st minute, as Jonathan Walters thundered home a penalty to give Tony
Pulis' side the victory.

Brazil's Under-20s get set to face Mexico
Brazil and Mexico's Under-20s meet tonight in the Estádio Hernán Ramírez Villegas, in
Pereira, Colombia, with a place in the finals of the World Cup at stake.
Brazil coach Ney Franco is expected to field the same starting line-up that saw off Spain on
penalties in the quarter-finals.
Despite the fears that I, among others, expressed about England's fate in their Under-20s World
Cup last-16 encounter with Nigeria, it turned out that you could say: "England could have won", out
loud, in public, and not be immediately fitted up for a white, long-sleeved jacket. Blackpool's
Matt Phillips was the one England player of which most observers had heard.
Brazil's Under-20s in their final training session before the Panama game
Brazil's U-20s take on Panama in Barranquilla tonight knowing that they already have a place in

Austria 3-0.
The coach is forced to make changes for the Panama encounter.

One of the country's leading officials, Mark Clattenburg, a man trusted by Uefa to oversee their
games, is taking a month off from Premier League duties to escape the relentless opprobrium.
Clattenburg's elite colleagues are furious such a respected official has been pushed to the brink.
Some of the criticism levelled at referees is legitimate but most is excessive in a sport that
has become so high speed and so high profile in a country so quick to apportion blame.
I don't think there was much surprise when Sir Alex Ferguson refused to speak to the press after
his side's defeat to Liverpool on Sunday.
He will, of course, been frustrated after his team were thoroughly dismantled to fall to their
second defeat in a week. But he will also have been aware that the last time he spoke to the press
he ended up with an FA charge.
Certain recurring narratives were reinforced when Manchester United beat Wigan 4-0 away on
Saturday.
Whether or not their import will be heeded by their manager going forward remains to be seen.

Villarreal left Naples with a draw against Napoli, and have a great chance to progress to the
last-16 of the Europa League.
Chances were few and far between in a match that had been billed as boasting two of Europe's
more attacking sides. For Napoli in-form forwards Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi struggled to
get into the game, with the former having one effort disallowed for offside and both denied by good
stops from Diego Lopez.
