FC Porto and Sporting both stumbled in action today, a day after Braga succumbed to their first
defeat. Porto travelled to Madeira to take on Maritimo and were defeated when Rolando deflected a
ball into his own net at the 30th minute mark and that was all the scoring of the match as Maritimo
defeated Porto 1-0, while Sporting traveled to Rio Ave for a battle and jumped to a 2-0 lead on

Sporting have falling back a few spots in the Portuguese Superliga after drawing today against
Maritimo. Sporting looked to cement their fourth place spot but after the draw with Maritimo
coupled with Rio Ave and Nacional victories, Sporting now sit tied in sixth spot in the league.

Maritimo have opened Week 7 of the Superliga (Liga Sagres) with a big road win over Academica.
Maritimo took it to the hosts early and Marchino scored at the 13th minute mark, then Baba's first
of two made it 2-0 before the half. Academica made it a game with an early second half marker by
Fidalgo but Baba and Bruno replied putting this game out of reach.

Braga continue their run atop the Superliga (Liga Sagres), with a victory in Madeira over Martimo.
Braga got their markers from J. Pereira and Meyong while Maritimo's marker came from Miguel Angelo
as Braga win the matchup 2-1 and remain unbeaten early in this campaign.

Benfica opened their season at home against Maritimo with a 1-1 draw as the Eagles dominated just
about the entire game and only a first half penaly taken by Alonso had Maritimo up at the half.
Maritimo's keeper kept Benfica at bay with some key stops in the second half even foiling Benfica's
Cardozo on a penalty kick before Weldon gave Benfica the equalizer.

We have another Weekend of Friendlies by Portuguese clubs. There were quite a few teams in action
this past weekend and we will start our round up with last seasons Champions FC Porto who defeated
Monaco 3-0, Mariano and Guarin scored for Porto and Monaco also provided an own goal to round out
the score.

Maritimo look to bring back former striker Makukula to the Madeira team. Maritimo are currently in
negotiations with Benfica for the players rights, Makukula last played for Maritimo in the 2007/08

FC Porto wins again as the season winds down with a 4-1 victory over Trofense in Week 29 action
Lisandro Lopez and Farias each scored a pair for Porto while Hugo Leal replied late for Trofense to
spoil the cleansheet. Sporting also won 2-1 over Maritimo in Madeira as Leidson scored a pair and
now trails Nacional's Nene by two goals for the Superliga Golden Boot

FC Porto and Benfica continue their winning ways and nothing will change this week at the top of
the Superliga as far as the Top 3 Standings go. FC Porto defeated Setubal on two goals by Lisandro
Lopez while Benfica jumped to a 3-0 lead on goals by David Luiz and a pair from Oscar Cardozo
before Maritimo made a game of it but still falling to the eagles 3-2.

Braga and Maritimo opened up Week 24 with a draw in the Liga Sagres. It was a Good Friday for both
teams as the eached picked up a point in a 1-1 affair with both goals coming from the penalty kick
spot. Luis Aguiar scored first for Braga before Bruno brought the game back to a deadlock. Braga
currently sit in 4th spot with Maritimo occupying the 6th spot.

So it looks like David Villa is ready and able to play against Osasuna tomorrow after all.
I'm happy about that. And while I will let this issue slide, I am still of the opinion that
bringing Villa into the game against Maritimo on Thursday was the wrong decision. He shoots and

Portuguese outfit Maritimo host the first leg at their Estádio dos Barreiros, having made
their last UEFA Cup appearance in 2004/05. However, their European campaign that season ended
rather immediately after being eliminated on penalties against Glasgow Rangers. Maritimo qualified
through to this season's competition after finishing a credible 5th in their domestic league.
