It wasn't pretty. Hell, it was downright hideous. But it's a win, one that puts us in the
fifth-round draw. Hey, that's good enough for this guy.

I guess we should have expected this. All the hype, all the controversy it simply overstated
what was bound to be on display at Loftus Road on Saturday.

I guess we should have expected this. All the hype, all the controversy it simply overstated
what was bound to be on display at Loftus Road on Saturday.
Mark Hughes' first game as Queens Park Rangers manager ended in defeat as Newcastle United
strengthened their European hopes at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday.
Leon Best's well-taken first-half strike was enough to see off the challenge of QPR and lift his
side up to sixth in the Premier League table, level on points with Arsenal.
Neil Warnock's sacking by QPR after a run of just two points from their last eight league
matches was not as much of a surprise as one would expect. Warnock had not only saved the club from
relegation after joining from Crystal Palace during the 2009-10 season but led Rangers to the
Championship title in his full season.
Suarez fires home his header...Luis Suarez grabbed the winner for
Liverpool on Saturday in a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. The Reds had bags of chances whilst
QPR barely troubled goalkeeper Pepe Reina. The away side however showed great courage in ensuring
Liverpool didn't get anything else past Radek Cerny.

Manager Neil Warnock was left wishing Luis Suarez played for QPR after suffering a 1-0 defeat at
Liverpool.
The Uruguayan, who has been in the headlines for the wrong reasons after two Football Association
charges, scored his first goal since October to seal the points at Anfield.
Heroics from QPR goalkeeper Radek Cerny had for a time looked as if they might have condemned
Liverpool to a sixth Premier League draw at Anfield this season.

It's our first away trip to QPR since 1995 and we're in dire need of a better result than the
1-0 loss we suffered that day after the downbeat nature of our Carling Cup exit.

QPR boss Neil Warnock has warned Newcastle United that a loud home support awaits their trip to
Loftus Road ahead of tonight's clash between the two sides.
Warnock, who signed several experienced top flight stars such Luke Young and Shaun
Wright-Phillips before the closing of the summer transfer window, has singled out former Magpies
midfielder Joey Barton as the club's most significant acquisition and tipped the presence of the
controversial player to light up the atmosphere.
It's the first Premiership game after an international break and the transfer deadline day
changes. Since we last played, Luke Young and Jean II Makoun headed for pastures new, but were
replaced by Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas.
Here's how the two managers are going to look for the points today:
Hutton replaces Chris Herd in the only change to the starting line-up against Wolves, but Jenas
doesn't make the 18.

Paul Ince has a point! (about England players having questionable attitudes, that is.)
QPR's new full-back Luke Young has spoken about his decision to retire from international
football in 2009, pointing the finger at Fabio Capello in the process.

New Queens Park Rangers signing Shaun Wright-Phillips has spoken about his determination to be
successful at his new club, proving some people wrong in the process.
The England winger joined the newly promoted club from big-spending Manchester City on transfer
deadline day for an undisclosed fee.
The summer transfer window has finally come to a close, Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas both
joined from Tottenham to complete our squad for the coming season.
Hutton joins on a four year contract and will be Luke Young's natural replacement, especially
with news of Eric Lichaj's hip injury keeping him out for the next four months.
Peter Crouch might be on his way to Stoke
Peter Crouch might be Stoke bound with only personal terms to be ironed out. Sebastian Bassong
is now a QPR man. Alan Hutton and Jermaine Jenas have been strongly linked to Aston Villa. Wilson
Palacios and Roman Pavlyuchenko could also be on their way out.
It's a little over 10 hours to go before the rumour mongers and speculation, erm, spasmos take
themselves a much needed break. At least for a fortnight or so, then they'll be back with a
vengeance, leading all the way up to the perennially underwhelming January window.
Until then, I thought I'd summarise this summer's movements to date, borrowing from the transfers
page, and throw in anything that happens during the course of this afternoon and evening.
With several players still linked with Spurs as we head towards the last 24 hours of this
transfer window, it looks like being a far busier day for Tottenham than it was 12 months ago.
Meanwhile, there is much hope that some of the deadwood will be off the books and the first to
leave could be Wilson Palacios with news of an £8m deal to Stoke expected very shortly.

You'll all be aware by now that Luke Young and Jonathan Hogg left Villa, joining QPR and Watford
respectively, over the weekend; both signing three year contracts. Although I missed it at the
time, Young's move did warrant an announcement, Hogg apparently slipped away in the night.
I noticed during pre-season that Hogg had been removed from the squad pages on the official
site, perhaps that's got something to do with it.

The fans who stayed away from this dirge fest in droves were the lucky ones; only surprise
inclusion Chris Herd and Gabby Agbonlahor provided anything worth getting excited about. The ~12k
empty seats generated more talking points during the game than the "action" on it.
There's nothing to say about the first half, it was truly awful.
Premier League new boy's QPR have signed un-wanted Newcastle midfielder Joey
Barton on a four year contract which will see him at Loftus Road until 2015.
And Barton could be joined at the club by both Shaun Wright Phillips and Luke Young after bids
for the duo were accepted by Manchester City and Aston Villa respectively.
As someone who loathes the flood of transfer speculation we're forced to swim through for the
best part of 10 months of every year, I was actually pleased that cold water was poured on our
prospects of trading in the market some time ago. However, with the transfer window coming to a
close next week, there are a few signs of movement.

Simon Jones is Sportsmail's man on the inside of all the major transfer moves. His column offers
an insight into the deals which will be done and those that won't. Here's his rundown for August
23.
Alex McLeish kicked off his first Villa Park match with a near perfect start thanks to goals
from Gabby Agbonlahor, Emile Heskey and Darren Bent. Only Morten Gamst Pedersen's very well taken
header spoiled the perfect result. Most importantly though; three points and a convincing
performance were required today.
Guess who's coming to Villa Park... again!! I'm sure their fans are as sick of the
sight of us as we are of them. Fortunately, if we can avoid being drawn against them in both of the
cups, we won't have to see them again until the reverse of this fixture in March next year.
So, here's how the two Glaswegian managers are sending their sides out today in what will be
Alex McLeish's first home game since taking over at Aston Villa.
Rioters took a 20-year-old hairdryer... look what they left!
Well-wishers have collected over £25,000 for 89-year-old barber Aaron Biber, whose Tottenham
shop was wrecked and looted during last week's riots. The invaders took cotton wool, a kettle and a
20-year-old hairdryer.
The new 2011/12 Premier League season is finally here! It's the battle of the new managers at
Craven Cottage today, although Martin Jol does have several competitive games under his belt in the
Europa League.
Here are the confirmed line-ups for both sides:
Fulham Aston Villa 1 Mark Schwarzer 1 Shay Given 18 Aaron Hughes 2 Luke Young 14 Philippe Senderos

Aston Villa are taking 24 players to Hong Kong to compete in the Barclays Asia Trophy and the
travelling party are en route right now. As the strength and depth of the squad is a hot topic at
the moment, I thought it might be interesting to compare this pre-season tournament squad with the
squads from the last couple of seasons.
There is apparently a quote from Alex McLeish doing the rounds this evening which has caused a
few knickers to get well and truly twisted. It doesn't take much admittedly, if it's not the colour
of socks, it's something else equally earth-shattering. The new gaffer has said something to the
effect that he only expects to make one more signing before the season starts.

For many, the exit of Martin O'Neill as Aston Villa manager at the beginning of the previous
season was the prime reason for their decline. When O'Neill took over for the 2006/07 campaign,
Villa had finished a lowly 16th the year before under David O'Leary, managing only 42 points.

Where they stand:
Well, well, well, if I was an Aston Villa fan I would be sceptical – looking down the barrel
at another mid-table finish.
This is it then; the last game of the season. It might something of a dead rubber for us,
although I'd like to think the players would be keen to finish the season on a high note. Liverpool
fans will be hoping for a win at Villa Park and a loss for Tottenham at White Hart Lane. So, the
exact opposite of us then.

Liverpool are off to Villa Park on the final day of the 2010-2011 season.
The season that seemed like it would never end finally does tomorrow, and ushers in a hotly
anticipated summer that could see a tremendous amount of turnover. Ninety minutes separate a club
that stuttered and stumbled for much of the first of the season from the chance to improve across
the board, with reinforcements promised and the feeling that everything's finally in place for
Liverpool to make the improvements needed.
