With the first quarter of football almost over in most leagues around Europe, now is a good time
to measure the current progress of some of the giant clubs on the continent. Actually, analyzing
the success or failure of clubs in general won't be nearly as exciting as identifying a more
specific object of analysis.

While he was honored as Estonia's best player in the past half a century by the nation's
football association, Mart Poom could not earn even remotely the same kind of respect on club
level. Despite boasting a variety of Eastern European and English clubs on his resume during his
early days as a player, the legendary former Estonia goalkeeper is best remembered for an extremely
inactive spell as a back-up keeper at Arsenal F.

Arsene Wenger's rapidly increasing dependence on youngsters within his squad
reached new heights this midweek when he chose to start off the Champions League group

For Premier League fans around the world, the last couple of weeks have been
almost too painful to endure as something very important seems to have disappeared out of our
lives. But with yet another international period finally in the
books, we can once again look forward to the return of our most beloved brand of football this
weekend.

Ivan Rakitić's 24th minute goal sealed the deal for Croatia as they played Belarus in Zagreb on
Saturday. Vedran Runje produced an excellent string of saves to ensure that the score stayed 1-0;
it was a wonderful game on his part. As Croatia were without Luka Modrić and Belarus Alexander ...

Some moments are never meant to be forgotten. The entire world of football witnessed one such
shocking moment a little less than two years ago in London. On a rainy evening at
Wembley, hosts England were expected to advance to the finals of
Euro 2008 with just a draw needed against visiting Croatia.

Oh Spurs. You do warm the cockles of my heart on these blustery Autumnal nights. I love these
little PR stunts. You know, the happy, smiley, 'look-at-us-we're-all-friends' gems that pop up on
the official website from time to time.
This latest one has provided some excellent feelgood pictures, all coming from the clubs official
squad photocall.

Another week of Premiership action is now in the books, and Thursday means one thing: it's time
for the Thursday Throwdown from A to Z. Here we go...
A is for Anelka. Chelsea fans should be counting their lucky stars that both
Nicolas Anelka and Didier Drogba are in spectacular form.

If you are Paul Hart - by far the bookies' favorite to become the first sacked manager in the
Premier League this season - you would need a miracle to save Portsmouth from relegation at this
point. Four games into the new season, Pompey are yet to scrap up a single point, which is a clear
indicator of how the team roster was in desperate need of major bolstering on the final day of
transfers.

I feel like Mr Pink after the dust settles in that brief, but oh-so-memorable shoot-out. I'll
just tip-toe around the bloody mess, pick up the case full of loot and hot-foot it out of here.
The bloody mess is Bentley to Man City, Petrov the other way, David James splattered all over
the place, and even Anton Ferdinand, sitting lifelessly on a chair minus an ear.

Time for Harry to raid Fratton Park again?
Even though Portsmouth have now successfully been taken over by Sulaiman Al-Fahim it seems that
the club may still see a few faces leave the club and one of those faces may well be Niko Kranjcar
if the Croatian international decides that the club is unlikely to prosper after selling off the
heart of the team in the past year.

The NSW Premier League's regular season is now at its halfway point, and Sydney United are still
well out in front, despite a setback on Friday night.
Behind them is a chasing pack of three, with no other teams within coo-ee of the leaders at
present. So then, a look at the top four in this season's competition, and a preview of what the
back end of the season might hold.

I am not quite sure how much of an audience an article about the German Bundesliga can get, but
I will still give it a shot. After all, if there is one league that has continued to offer an
air-tight title race throughout the year, it has to be the German first division. With two games to
go, as many as four teams have a realistic chance of being crowned champions.

It's always this way, isn't it? You wait forever for one bus and then four or five come along at
once. After a fairly drab season by Premier League standards, it's all gone frigging loopy as the
fight for European and domestic dominance reaches its final stretch. A month ago we (well mainly I,
but I'm sure you, too) were bemoaning the lack of really exciting games from the 08-09 Premier
League season.

The time for boldness has arrived. We definitely won't be relegated. We just might get into the top
half but its by no means certain. Its not all over yet by a long way; the fat lady hasn't sung, but
at least she's standing in the wings.
A lot of fans have gone from desperation to over enthusiasm but I'm just sticking with not being
desperate.

One cannot help but notice that when it comes to the German football players, not many of them
fancy playing in the Premiership. I first started following the German Bundesliga around half a
decade ago; the reason why I tuned in every single week to catch up with some Deutsch football was
that I could never get to see enough German representation in the Premier League.

While Juande Ramos' career at White Hart Lane is done and dusted, remains of his legacy can still
be spotted. Over the summer, Tottenham wrapped up an exciting £9 million deal for Barcelona's
Giovani Dos Santos. Once viewed as Barca's successor to Ronaldinho, fans around the league - myself
included - were anxious to see the Mexican's talents.
