That was the story Tuesday night as Argentina slumped to a 1-0 defeat away to Venezuela in the
second round of 2014 World Cup qualifying in South America. Despite replacing coach Sergio Batista
after a poor performance at the 2011 Copa America, Argentina once again struggled against a lesser
opponent under new coach Alejandro Sabella.
Canada's quest to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup has started off in fine fashion.
After beating St. Lucia convincingly on Friday, the Canadians topped Puerto Rico by a 3-0
scoreline on the road behind goals from Iain Hume, Simeon Jackson and Tossaint Ricketts to take
early control of Group D on Tuesday.
US's Strategy
Bob Bradley elected to keep the same 4-2-3-1 formation that worked well v Jamaica on Sunday.
Surprisingly, Landon Donovan started on the bench once again. The only change was Juan Agudelo in
for the injured Jozy Altidore as the central striker. Panama's Strategy
The Red Tide came into the match without their striker Blas Perez, who was sent off v El Salvador.
For the right to advance to the Finals, the US will have to avenge a group stage defeat to Panama.
In the first meeting in Tampa, the Red Tide came quickly out of the gates, catching the Yanks by
surprise and taking a 2-nil first half lead. The Yanks responded after the break with a 68th minute
header from Clarence Goodson, but Panama held on for the 2-1 upset.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. men's national team will face Panama in the Gold Cup once again.
After playing to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, Panama defeated El Salvador, 5-3, on penalty
kicks in a crazy second game of Sunday night's quarterfinals doubleheader at RFK Stadium.
The Canadian men's national team's Gold Cup began with a goal conceded due to shaky goalkeeping,
and it ended the same way.
Goalkeeper Milan Borjan couldn't control Blas Perez' rebound attempt on the goal line, and Luis
Tejada got the final touch to score in the waning moments of the clubs' Group C finale, which ended
in a 1-1 draw at Livestrong Sporting Park.
Entering this 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the United States Men's National Team had it's issues.
Most figured they would ultimately be exposed in the late stages of the tournament. Instead, those
problems, coupled with a lackluster first-half performance, contributed to a 2-1 defeat to Panama
in Group C play.
Ridge Mahoney of Soccer America offers three points of emphasis following the USA's 2-1 loss to
Panama in the Concacaf Gold Cup Saturday night in Tampa, Fla.:
Sluggish first half is costly. Again. After scoring in the 15th minute to take a
lead they held until the final whistle against Canada, the Americans said all the right things
about how important a strong start would be against Panama, which lost, 2-1, in the 2007 and 2009
Gold Cup quarterfinals after playing them to a 0-0 tie in the 2005 final.
The US chased the game from the opening whistle....
The US falls to Panama in Game 2 of the Group Stage. It's the first loss ever for the States in
the Group Stage of the Gold Cup. The game was a fascinating tactical battle.
• Panama was excellent. The US failed to execute and seemed ill-prepared.
TAMPA, Fla. A 2-0 halftime deficit proved too much for the United States Men's National Team to
overcome on Saturday night as they were upset 2-1 by Panama in their second match of CONCACAF Gold
Cup group play. The loss was the U.S.'s first ever to Panama and first ever in the CONCACAF Gold
Cup group stages.
TAMPA - The U.S. men's national team entered its game on Saturday night with an unblemished
record against Panama and in the all-time history of the group stages in the Gold Cup.
Both unbeaten records were broken at Raymond James Stadium after Panama held off a comeback
effort from the United States and defeated the Americans, 2-1, in a Group C match played in front
of 27,731 fans.
TAMPA -Â The U.S. men's national team has a history of dominance over Panama, but the Americans
are entering their second Group C match in the CONCACAF Gold Cup knowing a win won't come easy.
Falling behind two goals and then seeing his side go down a man on a 37th minute red card wasn't
the way that Sephane Auvray and Guadeloupe wanted to start their 2011 Gold Cup campaign. Panama
jumped to an early lead from goals by Blas Perez and Luis Tejada, then saw Mickael Tacalfred sent
off in the 37th minute.

Tampa, Fla. The United States suffered a humbling defeat to Panama 2-1 at Raymond James Stadium
last night. Flat and disorganized for the first 68 minutes the United States could not overcome a
slow start losing for the first time ever in the Gold Cup group stage. The US seemed surprised at
the level of intensity shown by Panama, something I warned about in my preview of the match.

Its games like this that make you wonder about the U.S. soccer team. With a group C win in their
grasp the Yanks dropped a shameful 2-1 result to Panama, putting the team in jeopardy of having a
much tougher road to the finals.
By Dr. Raf Crowley and Neil W. Blackmon Round 2....fight! I'm starting off strong today ladies
and gentlemen! The good news first: the USMNT will play in its 4th consecutive GC final. As
expected when the tournament began, we will play Mexico, who again looked vulnerable after
squeaking out a 2-0 victory against Honduras shortly [.
Freddy Adu's heads up play found Landon Donovan steaming on the right and in a flash the LA
Galaxy man positioned himself to lay a perfectly delivered low cross which found who else but Clint
Dempsey. Goal. This was the USA at its best 0-60 counterattacking best. It took but a moment but it
changed a match desperately in need of an adrenaline rush.

Tomorrow the US will get a second chance at Panama when the two teams meet in the semi-final of
the Gold Cup. In group play Panama earned its first ever win against the Americans while also
snapping the US's undefeated streak when competing in the Gold Cup group stage.
Since the 2-1 loss to Panama the US has come back with two straight shutouts and has tightened
up its back four by moving captain Bocanegra to center back and bringing in Lichaj at left
back.
Tosaint Ricketts (UW-Green Bay) came on as a sub in the 73rd minute, but Canada
was eliminated from the CONCACAF Gold Cup after a heartbreaking a 1-0 loss to Panama on Tuesday
night at Livestrong Park in Kansas City, Kan.
The Canadians would have advanced to the quarterfinals with a 0-0 tie, but Luis
Tejada scored in second-half stoppage time to end their tournament.
The 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup came to end Tuesday night at the new Livestrong Stadium in Kansas City
with Canada playing Panama and the United States taking on Guadeloupe.
In the night's first match, Canada took an early lead over Panama in the 61st minute when Dwayne De
Rosario converted a penalty kick after being fouled by Eybir Bonaga.
Stephane Auvray and Guadeloupe bowed out of the Gold Cup tonight at LiveSTRONG Sporting Park,
losing to the United States 1-0. While the US dominated the game, they were only able to find a
single goal through Jozy Altidore. Much of the rest of the game saw Clint Dempsey miss numerous
chances to extend the USA's lead.
This recap won't be nearly as fun to write as the last one. To sum it up, the US played poorly.
We had never lost in group play in the Gold Cup until last night. Panama came out as the quicker,
hungrier team. The same problem that has plagued the US throughout much of the Bob Bradley era
reared it's ugly head again: slow starts.
What follows is the match recap I wrote last night for The Shin Guardian. The only changes are a
few links I thought I would add, and one more disclaimer. Below where it reads "This loss isn't on
Bob Bradley", after a spirited comment discussion at TSG, I'll amend slightly. Yes, Bob Bradley's
tactics weren't [.
Panama handed the United States' its first ever group stage loss at the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a

Group C wrapped up the second round of Gold Cup group stage matches on Saturday night in Tampa. In
the night's opening match, Canada and Guadeloupe were both looking for their first group stage win
while the United States and Panama met in the second match with both teams looking for that win
that would secure a quarterfinals berth.
Panama through Luis Tejada and Gabriel Gomez go 2 up before Clarence Goodson pulls one back. The
Panamanians secure a spot in the knock out stage while the USA will duke it out with Canada for the
second spot after their neighbours to the north won against Guadeloupe . It was the USA's first
ever loss in the Gold Cup group stage - an unbeaten streak of 26 matches coming to a screaming
halt.

GOLD CUP: Panama king in penalties in win over El Salvador - originally posted on

For the second time this weekend a Gold Cup quarterfinal was decided in penalty kicks. This time
it was Panama who came out on top 5-3 after they played El Salvador to a 120 minute 1-1 draw.
The match had everything you could ask for in a match; theatrics, late goals, physicality, red
cards and then the suspense at the end.
By Jon Levy It's nice to return to the "pages" of TYAC after a morale boosting win, and that's
exactly what the Canada match was. The Yanks weren't perfect, but they were definitely good.
