The Chicago Red Stars, led by Lori Chalupny, host the Boston Breakers today in a match between a
pair of undefeated WPSL Elite squads. The Breakers include US WNT midfielder Heather O'Reilly and
Kristine Lilly is an Assistant Coach.
Gametime is 5pm and the Red Stars are offering a live Webcast of the match.
The Independence looked like a team that was playing its fourth game in twelve days when they
conceded two early goals to the league's worst ranked offense.
By the end of the game, the Independence looked like the championship contender they are.
"A team has never come back from 2-0 deficit in this league," Independence head coach Paul Riley
said, "and we have done it twice.
Since the first women's soccer tournament at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, the USWNT has won three
gold medals and one silver. A look back at how they got it done.
I tried to tune in to watch the USWNT take on the Dominican Republic at the appointed 10:30 pm
start time last night. In the 10 or so minutes it took me to update the stupid Silverlight player
and get the game to load, I missed the opening 3 goals, which all happened inside the first 7
minutes of the game.
On Saturday, July 22nd, in the Atlanta Beat's first home game since the end of the World Cup the
fans came out in full support with a sold out KSU Soccer Stadium. The official attendance was
announced at 9,345. The Beat were looking to break their 12 game winless streak against a
magicJack team that was coming off short rest after taking on Western New York Flash three days
prior.

Week 4 of WPS took place at the same hour, same day and same coast. All 4 games this weekend
were played at 6 pm on the east coast, on Saturday with a special FSC broadcast of the Sky Blue
FC-FC Gold Pride match up that day. This weekend saw the Chicago Red Stars earn their first win of
the season against a very strong Boston Breakers side, and that was the big story that came out of
WPS.
This time last year, the Philadelphia Independence were entering the end of preseason training.
Now, players from the 2011 team—as well as new players who were announced or rumored to be
joining the club before the 2012 WPS season was cancelled—are spread all over Europe and the
US.
All-Stars, Le Toux rumors, and a new signing for the Philadelphia Independence are all part of
this week's KYW Philly Soccer Show.
In part one, KYW's Greg Orlandini and Philly Soccer Page writer Eli Pearlman-Storch kick of
this week's edition of the pod by talking about the MLS All-Star game, which will be held at PPL
Park, in Chester, Pa.
On Wednesday, the Independence finally made official what has been rumored for weeks, that
former Atlanta Beat midfielder/striker Lori Chalupny has signed with the team. Chalupny is a former
USWNT player who has been capped over 90 times for the senior squad.
Now that we've got the men out of the way, it's the women's turn on Friday. The WPS Draft
continues an exciting week of soccer from Kansas City as the Independence look to bolster their
squad moving into 2012.
In speaking with Philadelphia coach Paul Riley this week, it appears the entire starting XI from
last season's WPS Final will be returning to Philadelphia.
Vero Boquete scored the only goal in the Philadelphia Independence 1–0 win over Atlanta on
Sunday night. It was her third game winning goal in the last four games, and with it the
Independence secured at least a second place finish in WPS. A season high, 4,000 people were on
hand as Philadelphia welcomed the bottom team in WPS to Widener University
The match was the first at home for the Independence's USWNT players Lori Lindsey, Amy Rodriguez
and Nicole Barnhart since the end of the Women's World Cup.
Week three of Women's Professional Soccer is in the books with two matches played over the
weekend of April 23-24. The Boston Breakers traveled to Florida to take on magicJack which won 1-0
on Saturday. The WNY Flash traveled down to Atlanta to take on the Beat where they played to a 2-2
draw.
For magicJack, this was their first game ever after the game the week before in Philadelphia was
postponed.
ESPN looks at the MVP race and says that, while Le Toux is unlikely to win the title largely due
to the Union not making it to the postseason, he wins the MOT, or Most Outstanding Player award.
(ESPN tips Dallas FC's David Ferreira to win the MVP. San Jose's Chris Wondolowski kept his iron in
the fire with a hat trick on Wednesday against Chivas USA.
A huge Atlanta Beat win against the Breakers, a Sky Blue FC upset against Philadelphia
Independence, and FC Gold Pride taking the regular season championship (and right to host the WPS
Final) all belong to Week 19 of Women's Professional Soccer.
On Thursday, the Washington Freedom defeated the Chicago Red Stars 2-0.
Amy Rodriguez is part of a class of four Philadelphia Independence players who made the WPS
All-Star teams.
Rodriguez will come off the bench for Team Marta, which features defender Allison Falk in the
starting lineup. Midfielder Lori Lindsey will start for Team Abby.
Independence midfielder Caroline Seger is a member of Team Marta but her injury will keep her
off the field.
Here are some photos from the WPS All-Star Game week in Atlanta, Ga. on Monday June 28 and
Tuesday, June 29. Tune in to the WPS All-Star Game on Fox Soccer Channel on Wednesday, June 30th,
at 7:30pm ET to catch teams Abby XI and Marta XI in action!
WPS Sunday on FSC announcer Jenn Hildreth and WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci prepare for the
All-Star Pick 'Em Event on June 28, 2010.
This is what happened on Week 8 of WPS after a little rescheduling of games. FC Gold Pride (#1)
hosted the Washington Freedom (#2). Sky Blue FC (#4) took a little road trip down to Philly to face
the Independence (#3), and the Athletica Atlanta Beat (#7), now being called Atlantica (Hope Solo
started it!
Today a soccer team in the USA folded because of a "funding crisis."Â Â
I didn't cry.  Frankly, I barely blinked.
It made me realize that while I care deeply about the success of soccer in the USA, if I'm
honest, I care deeply about the success of men's soccer in the USA.
Women's Professional Soccer: Saint Louis Athletica to Shut Down
Just two weeks ago, the league learned of a cash flow shortage at St. Louis Soccer United –
which includes the owner of the Saint Louis Athletica and a St. Louis men's team – that
threatened the remainders of both teams' seasons.
Gabriel Gomez makes Goal.com's list of 10 MLS newcomers to watch. Goal says Gomez's biggest
weakness is his inability to stick with one club for an extended period of time. So yeah, he's
pretty good on the field.
Alecko Eskandarian says he looks forward to seeing Cristhian Hernandez's "cultured left foot"
making an impact at PPL Park for a long time.
This day in history, February 28, 2008: MLS announces Philadelphia will join the league as its
16th franchise in the 2010 season. (Not sure if this counts as a birthday, but it makes for a nice
headline. More importantly, it's just a great day to remember.
The beat (no pun intended) goes on for the Independence, announcing the signing of former US
Women's National Team standout, Lori Chalupny earlier today. Chalupny comes to Philadelphia from
the Atlanta Beat, where she played in 17 games and scored two goals. "Lori is a world class
midfielder. She has great vision, is a fantastic engine and can play both the percentage and
million dollar pass," Philadelphia head coach Paul Riley told the official Independence website
today.
If you watched the games on the weekend, you already know this, but the Atlanta Beat now have 8
former Atheltica players including Hope Solo, Lori Chalupny, and Eniola Aluko. Too bad Tobin Heath
is done for the year.
I can't say I'm an Atlanta fan, but it would sure be something for that team to climb the standings
and make the playoffs.

In a battle of undefeateds, Michele Weissenhofer's 34th minute strike gave the edge to the Red
Stars (3-0-0, 9 points), who handed a 1-0 loss to the Breakers (5-1-0, 15 points) on Sunday.
Chicago keeper Jamie Forbes allowed Weissenhofer's goal to hold by making eight saves. Her
counterpart, Alice Binns, stopped seven on the evening.
