Now that we know the teams that will be making it to South Africa for the World Cup finals, i
think its time we all took the bold step of picking our favorites to win the tournament. I know
many of you might say that the right time to do this will be after the group stage draw that will
happen in about two weeks time on the 4th of December.

John Terry
We never give too much attention to defenders in the weekly Top Performers, but last week John
Terry not only led the Blues to a shutout against a highly potent offense, but he also put in the

Will there ever be a Chelsea-Manchester United match-up that won't involve referee criticisms?
Whenever Sir Alex and his side end up losing -- especially in a match with such stakes -- comments
from the often critical Scotsman almost always lashes out at the ref shortly after the final

A lone goal in the 84th minute was enough to give Porto a well earned victory away from home, and
propel them into the knockout stage of the Champions League. The game started well, with Helton
being forced to make a picture perfect save that kept his side in the match, and Falcao collected a

Last week's wacky shaninagians really reminded me 0f the short film The Red

it is the story of a boy who discovers a balloon that drifts around following him with a mind
of its own.

While Wednesday's UEFA Champions League matches didn't have the same kind of upsets, save for
one that was fairly huge. AC Milan, who had been off to a slow, struggling start to the 2009
campaign, came back from a 1-0 deficit to win 3-2 on the road against Real Madrid at the Santiago

What a wacky weekend it was this week in the Premier League. I don't know if it was Halloween
being right around the corner, but this week had some thrilling finishes.  It was the second
week in which the number one team was toppled from atop the league table and it was also the first
time that a club won by banking a shot off of a random object.

D.C. keeps its playoff hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over the best team in MLS. Luciano Emilio
scored the lone goal in the first half and on-loan Steve Cronin secured his first shutout for the

The name Bosnia and Herzegovina may not have an extremely familiar ring to it, but perhaps you
know the squad by their previous title, Yugoslavia. In 1993 following the split of socialistÂ
Yugoslavia, a new team was born. Unfortunately, Bosnia and Herzegovina has yet to make a name for
themselves on the biggest and brightest stage (the World Cup), but the squad has proven to be a
contender for the tournament several times throughout their brief history.

Sevilla pulled out a 2-1 victory against Real Madrid in a win that I knew would have seasons
unfolding and they certainly are. Real Madrid suffered its first defeat to fall from the ranks of
the unbeaten and Sevilla pulled to 5-1 (and now they now hold the same record as Madrid.)
A pair of headers was all it took to keep Real Madrid at bay and the smothering defense of
Sevilla allowed only one gaol (to Pepe.

AEK Archives 02 October @ 12:22 PM EST
A resurgent AEK overcame a depressing 4-0 thrashing to Everton two weeks ago to grind out a
surprising but deserved 1-0 victory over Portugeuese powerhouse club Benfica FC.
The night started dismally for AEK. Playing what I believe was a 4-2-3-1 with Saja in goal and
Juanfran, Arce, Marjstorovic, and Gorgeas in the back, Kafes and Jahic in defensive midfield roles,
Manduca, Scocco and Hersi forming a three-man attacking line and Blanco playing lone goal-poacher
up top, AEK struggled for possession early on.

This weekend had set itself up really nicely for DC United. After losses by Seattle and RSL, and
ties by Colorado, Chivas, and Toronto, DC United only needed a home victory against the worst road
team in the leauge in order to move into 5th place. But the underdogs continued to impress. Not
only did United lose, but they really deserved to lose.
