German Bundesliga Recap 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
Below are brief recaps for all the Bundesliga matches played on February 11, 2012.
Bayer Munich 2-0 Kaiserslautern
Bayern keeps pace with Dortmund with a clean sheet. Both goals came in the first half as Bayern
held Kaiserslautern to one shot on goal.
Well it's just a preseason match and doesn't count for anything, but the Dynamo's 1-0 victory
over the LA Galaxy does give us the ever so slightest bit of retribution after last season. Nathan
Sturgis scored his second goal of the preseason as the Dynamo defense continued it's streak of
clean sheets with their fifth straight shutout of the preseason.

Friday's scrimmage between the Houston Dynamo and the Los Angeles Galaxy may have been a rematch
of the 2011 MLS Cup, but last November's match was far from the minds of all involved.
The Dynamo defeated the Galaxy 1-0 after Nathan Sturgis scored the lone goal of the match on a
header from a looping cross from Josue Soto in the 68th minute.
The inevitable African Cup of Nations championship matchup between the continent's two
powerhouses has made way for a title game involving an underdog side that is a win away from
capping off a Hollywood-worthy script.
Upstart Zambia shocked favored Ghana, 1-0, to advance to the tournament final and prevent the
Black Stars from seeking redemption for their loss in the 2010 final.

One of the favorites to win this year's Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana opened its tournament with
a narrow victory over Botswana that can best be described as a roller coaster for John Mensah.
The Ghana captain endured highs and lows in Ghana's Group D opener, scoring the only goal before
receiving a red card and then picking up a hamstring injury.
The Colorado Rapids are shifting their philosophy after going through a front office and
technical staff overhaul, and that change is spreading to the field as well after the club
announced the signing of Colombian attacking midfielder Jaime Castrillon from Independiente
Medellin.
The U.S. Under-23 men's national team finished off its January training camp with a victory,
topping Alajuelense 1-0 in a friendly in Costa Rica.
Tony Taylor scored the lone goal, taking a pass from the Columbus Crew's Dilly Duka at the top
of the box and finishing in the 41st minute.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations got underway this past weekend, and co-hosts Equatorial Guinea
opened the tournament in dramatic fashion.
Former Real Madrid player Javier Balboa scored three minutes before the death to give Equatorial
Guinea a 1-0 win over Libya.
The Ivory Coast won their first match of the 2012 African Cup of Nations today, a 1-0 defeat of
Sudan with Didier Drogba scoring the lone goal.
Curious as to their current FIFA ranking and who else might likely put up a fight against the
Elephants, I looked it up. Learning that they rank 18th internationally didn't surprise, but the
fact that only 5 other African countries make up the top 50 did.

Ricardo Clark certainly makes his goals count. Two of his three career international goals have
been game-winners, and both in dramatic fashion. In addition to last night's header in the seventh
minute of added time, Rico drove home the lone goal in the 1-0 against Trinidad & Tobago on Sept.

Under-23 national team battled to a hard fought 1-1 draw against the U.S. national team on Tuesday

Washington, D.C. (January 10, 2012) – D.C. United's U-15 Academy team recently traveled to
Orlando, Fla. to participate in the annual Disney Soccer Showcase.
The trio of Wisconsin players at the Major League Soccer Combine did their best Tuesday to leave
good final impressions on the league's coaches and general managers before the SuperDraft.
Tony Walls (Wauwatosa East/UW-Green Bay) and Calum Mallace (Marquette) came off
the bench and scored in an eight-minute span in the second half to help spark the adiPower team
beat adiPure 4-1 in the last of six matches at the Combine in Lauderhill, Fla.

An Arsenal side on a swoon of sorts was able to pick itself up against QPR as Robin Van Persie
once again showed how to finish an opportunity. The goal was RVP's 35th, an Arsenal record for a
calender year, and falling short of Alan Shearer's prodigious output by a mere goal.

Scoring was not the easiest of things for the U.S. men's national team in 2011. It found the
back of the net just 16 times in 17 games for its lowest goal-scoring total in a decade.
That does not mean there weren't any nice goals, though.
Roman Pavlyechenko... it doesn't matter if the spelling is off... the kid was on today. Pavs scores

One player who spent his summer playing soccer in Wisconsin is now a national champion.
Carlos McCrary came off the bench and played 11 minutes as third-ranked North Carolina
tipped No. 14 Charlotte 1-0 in the NCAA Division I men's final Sunday in Hoover, Ala.
McCrary, a National Premier Soccer League All-Star after scoring five goals and adding two
assists for the Madison 56ers last summer, was on the field for the lone goal of the match – an
impressive curling, left-footed shot by Ben Speas from 25 yards out in the 65th minute.

Underdog Charlotte looked poised to pull another upset, and make North Carolina the latest
victim, but Tar Heels forward Ben Speas delivered a goal worthy of a championship to help UNC win
its first NCAA title in a decade.
Speas, who won a national title with Akron last season, produced the game's lone goal 24 minutes
from time with a fantastic strike.
The move to Holland has done wonders for Jozy Altidore's scoring touch.
The American forward scored the lone goal in AZ's 5-1 defeat to Heerenveen. Altidore leveled the
score in the 20th minute of the match, when he played a give-and-go with a teammate, the forward
cut through two defenders before firing in the goal.
Injuries to Given and Jenas saw Brad Guzan and Emile Hesky return to the field for the first time
in ages. Man U got a lone goal from Phil Jones as they walk away winners, 1-0. Word also came down
that Chicharito is out for a month with ligament damage.Video: FoxSports

FC Barcelona handed surprise defeat against Getafe (Photo: DANI POZO/AFP/Getty Images)
Barcelona saw their 27-game unbeaten streak come to an end, as Juan Valera's 67th minute header
gifted Getafe a 1-0 victory at the Coliseo Alfonso Perez in Madrid.
The defeat marks the first time Barca have lost a match since April 30th, having gone unbeaten
in 21 fixtures so far this season.

Timmy Chandler may have scored a goal on Saturday, but he wasn't the only U.S. men's national
team defender to make an impact with his left foot.
Jonathan Spector helped rescue Birmingham City from defeat, assisting on an 87th-minute
equalizer in the club's 2-2 draw with Blackpool.

LA Galaxy defeated Houston Dynamo 1–0 to win the MLS Cup. Landon Donovan scored the lone goal
and was named MVP. Player ratings are here.
All teams must submit their protected list to the league for Tuesday's Expansion Draft by 5pm
today.
The league made two big announcements on Sunday, one concerning the shift to a conference-based
schedule, the about changes to the playoff format aimed a rewarding those teams with better regular
season records.

For five years the suits in the Major League Soccer front office and the guys with the big time
pocket books have been waiting for this moment. They came close in 2009 in Seattle. Some expected
it to happen last year in Toronto only to see the LA Galaxy upstaged by a better FC Dallas team in
the conference finals.

CARSON, Calif. - Landon Donovan, it would appear, has a knack for timing.
While struggling with various ailments, including a particularly troublesome quadriceps strain,
the Los Angeles Galaxy captain notched just one goal and one assist in the regular season after the
end of July .

Evidently the Premier League wasn't that upset with Atkinson sending off Rodwell last month or he
wouldn't have gotten another Liverpool game so soon.
While the U.S. senior national team was busy getting a result in Slovenia, the U.S. Under-23
side training in Germany played to a draw and lost in a pair of friendlies against Bayer Leverkusen
reserve and youth sides.
A few days after topping VfL Bochum's reserve team and drawing against Azerbaijan's U-21 side,
the U-23s jumped out to a lead on a team comprised of Leverkusen's reserves and U-23s but settled
for a 1-1 draw.
1. We will see a starting lineup very similar to the one used against France. The only
differences will be Michael Orozco Fiscal for Clarence Goodson

Despite not starting Shrek, I mean Rooney, England pulls the friendly upset as Lampard scores the
lone goal. This is a shock considering Spain held possession for 71% of the game. Yeah, ESPN and
BBC are both quoting those stats. Is Spain the new Brazil? All possession and no goals?Video:

By the end of the first half of the first game of the playoff series against Houston it was
clear that the Philadelphia Union's defense was not adequately familiar with the new formation
deployed by Peter Nowak against the Houston Dynamo at PPL Park. In the second half, the Union
reverted to the tried and tested four man backline that had been so instrumental in seeing the
Union advance to the playoffs in the first place.
A trio of Galaxy goalscorers ensured that the Supporters' Shield winners would get the benefit
of home cooking for the MLS Cup Final as L.A. beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 Sunday night at the Home
Depot Center.
Landon Donovan (23′), Mike Magee (58′), and Robbie Keane (68′) all scored for the home

held at the Home Depot Center on November 20th.
