FC Barcelona took a good step towards proceeding to Copa Del Rey final with a 1-1 draw at
Mestella. Considering how tough we have found recently in Valencia, this draw is as good as a win -
especially because of the away goal. In the 27th minute Jonas put Valencia ahead, but Carles Puyol
equalised for Barca in the 36th minute.
Arsenal's on loan striker Carlos Vela must see an openining in the Gunner's midfield, as an
enforcer, whatch how he takes out the linesman with the minimum of fuss during Real Sociedad's 5-1
win at the week-end, and applause must also go to the official for doing a Messi and not a
Ronaldo.
Arsenal striker Carlos Vela, currently on loan at Real Sociedad, isn't renowned for his tackling.
But having found himself on the receiving end of a trip from a Sporting Gijon player, the Mexican
experienced immediate catharsis by being propelled into his own lunge on the linesman. The match
official clearly bore no grudge with Vela, [.

This poor linesman is hit with an embarrassing double whammy, first he's hit with the ball and
then loses his wig on the way down during a US College game.
FC Barcelona continued with their winning streak at home in La Liga with a very hard fought 4-2
victory against an inspired Real betis side. The match started very brightly for us going 2-0 up
within 12 minute, then turned into a nightmare when Real Betis equalised early into second
half.
It has been a difficult week for those running Lewes Football Club. The arrival of former
manager Steve King back at The Dripping Pan raised an eyebrow or two when he returned to the club
during the summer, but the owners of the club have rightly remained tight-lipped over what King may
or may not have been up to and, although there are any number of theories floating around this
ground as to why he should have found himself at home this afternoon, no official announcement has
been made and Simon Wormull takes his place in the home dug-out today.
This week saw some serious Coppa Italia action as the Serie A was put on hold. On Tuesday,
Lazio fielded a side culled from both their first team and reserves against Serie B side Hellas
Verona – a gamble for which they almost paid dearly. After securing a 2-0 lead, Lazio seemingly
fell asleep, and Hellas got back into the game with two goals in the second half.

Premier League managers are largely 'orrible, not to mention largely large. They only stop
whingeing about the referee when they're whingeing about the linesman. Should their team collect
silverware they are happy to take all the credit (stand up, Fergie), but should they flop it's
because of the referee (grow up, Fergie), FA sabotage (shut up, Fergie), or the colour of the
opposition shirts (bottoms up, Fergie).
Joey Barton reponded to his sending off today via twitter saying;
"Well feel for the officials, they've been conned. Admitted to me at HT they never saw it. I was
pulled back 1st, then kicked 2nd!."
"Linesman definitely never saw it, all he seen was Johnsons reaction. My head dosent move
forward at all.
Liverpool: Maxi 53′Blackburn: Adam (og) 45′
Liverpool drop points again at Anfield, failing convert their late surge into a winning goal
against a stubborn Blackburn Rovers side. The return of Steven Gerrard and two late chances got our
hopes up, but in the end it was the same frustrating story we've seen from Liverpool so many times
in the past year.
Remember when Rafael Benitez showed up that press conference ahead of Liverpool's game against
Stoke and produced a sheet of paper containing 'facts' about Sir Alex Ferguson?
During Andre Villas-Boas Friday press conference, the Chelsea manager produced a laminated chart
to show the press his club's current points compared with other teams of years gone by.
Stoke v Spurs was exciting.. but there's no call for that, lino!
United launch Phil Jones action figure... or is it Mr Potato Head? The week's daftest football
quotes, plus Howard Webb stars in textbook Yes, Stoke's win against Tottenham was very exciting.
But perhaps not quite as exciting as the linesman seemed to find it!
Liverpool Through To Semi Finals

days at Stamford Bridge. The 2-0 win saw Martin Kelly and Maxi Rodriguez bag the Reds their goals
whilst Chelsea couldn't even muster a consolation.

If you're reading this, you'll be familiar with the story that broke yesterday morning.
This is one of those posts I'd have preferred not have written: it's an unfathomable tragedy
that any 42 year old family man should apparently chose to end his life in such a devastating
manner. I didn't know Gary Speed, but I knew about him: he was one of the best Welsh players of his
generation and looked as if he was about to oversee a long overdue revival of the fortunes of the
Welsh national team.
1. [A one conclusion silence for Gary Speed. His sad passing and its effect on many of the players
on display yesterday put things into perspective.] 2. Rio Ferdinand's defending has been so below
par this season in between his injuries that the linesman just assumed he must have mistimed what
was actually a fantastic [.
As Newcastle United's season continued to unfurl, and the winning streak continued to lengthen,
accusations leveled at NUFC was that they hadn't played 'anyone' yet with 'anyone' presumed to be
the top four (this despite Newcastle playing both Arsenal and Spurs and coming away
undefeated).
Alex Ferguson's remarks after the 1-1 draw with Newcastle yesterday will in all likelihood
not be looked on fondly by the English FA officials. Alex Ferguson at final whistle yesterday
Ferguson was furious at the penalty decision given to Newcastle yesterday, when the Red Devils were
1-0 up due to a Hernandez goal after 49 minutes, and the linesman John Flynn was [.

Rio Ferdinand put in a brilliant challenge on Ben Arfa in the box only for the linesman John
Flynn to flag for a penalty. Mike Jones, who was filling in for Phil Dowd, had initially rightly
indicated that a corner should be awarded, before a discussion with Flynn saw him award a penalty,
denying United the three points.
A controversial penalty decision given by the linesman helped Newcastle to a 1-1 draw at Old
Trafford today, as United bombarded the Newcastle goal following Jonas's sending off late on, they
even thought they at snatched it at the death only for the same linesman gave Hernandez off-side
even though replay's were inconclusive of on side or off.

Serie A returned this weekend after the international break and it came back with a bang as
Juventus fine form continued with an emphatic win over Palermo. Inter Milan got back to winnings
way over Cagliari. Finally on Sunday we saw the greatest goal to be disallowed by a linesman who
ruled out Pablo Osvaldo over-head kick when he was onside.

Brolly bad luck The La Liga match between Granada and Real Mallorca was called off after an
assistant referee was struck by an umbrella. The linesman was left with a deep cut to his cheek
after being hit by the stray accessory. After spotting his bleeding colleague, the referee
immediately took all the match officials [.
A faulty umberella has been blamed for the abandonment of Sunday's La Liga fixture between
Granada and Real Mallorca.
Granada had just taken a 2-1 lead with about half an hour on the clock when the game was stopped
after a linesman was hit with a flying object in the face drawing blood.
By Chris Wright
Last night's La Liga tie between Granada and Mallorca was called off after an hour or so after
one of the linesman, Aguilar Rodriguez, had his face busted open (he suffered a suspected
fractured cheek bone) by an umbrella thrown from the stands...
With Granada 2-1 up at the time after coming from behind and looking on course for a much-needed
win considering how pap they've been this season, referee Clos Gomez stopped play after seeing his
colleague getting brollied over in the corner of the ground, immediately marching from the field
taking his assistants and Granada's three points with him.
Liverpool under-18s suffered a disappointing defeat to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon in a
game they largely dominated.
Bolton came into the game having only won once this season but showed no signs of nerves as they
came close after only one minute when centre back Threlkeld got free in the box only to head
straight at Jamie Stephens.
Goals:Adam 9' (pen)
Carroll 45+1'
A thorough, comfortable win, never in doubt after notching a second on the stroke of halftime, a
clean sheet easily kept away from Anfield.
Had Liverpool scored so early in their last league match, converting just one of the chances from
their fast start, we could have seen a similar result.
You might not have been alive that last time West Brom left Villa Park with three points: it was
May 11th 1979. In fairness, we've only played in the same league 12 seasons since then, which
reduces the chances of losing somewhat, but then we also didn't have to endure Phil Dowd
refereeing.
Maccabi Tel Aviv lost 3 - 0 to Stoke in the Europa league and one of the highlights of the match
was the way in which Maccabi defender Yoav Ziv got himself a red card in the second half.
He kicked his boot at the linesman.
By Chris Wright
After Stoke's Cameron Jerome had been ejected for the heinous crime of being caught in
possession of Class A elbows, the second red card of the night was a little more cut-and-dry, with
Maccabi's Yoav Ziv (the very same little scheister that feigned injury to get Jerome dismissed)
getting himself sent-off for hoofing his own boot at the linesman.
Crazy red card Talk about a studs-up challenge! Maccabi Tel Aviv player Yoav Ziv reinvented the
term when his gave the linesman the boot during last night's Europa League clash at Stoke. But his
foot wasn't even attached to the boot at the time. Ziv's left boot came off when he was trampled
over by [.

Spot the drug cheats
Forget the Russian linesman and whether or not the ball crossed the line and all that malarkey,
it has now been revealed that three of West Germany's team in the famous 1966 World Cup final
failed drug tests after the game.
Wherever he goes, Maradona makes sure to put his very special touches.

In another funny incident in South America, in a game between Nacional and Universidad de Chile was
abandoned after Milciades Saldivar was struck by what Uruguayan media have suggested was a cash
register roll.
Last night the Copa Sudamericana match between Nacional of Uruguay and Universidad de Chile had
to be called off early in the second half after a linesman was hit in the head by a streamer, yes a
streamer. As you can see in the video below, the linesman ended up collapsing to the ground after
the streamer roll hit him on top of the head.
