Stardust Memories

Center Holds It 27 July @ 06:39 PM EST
The WPS home page and standings page are afraid to admit it, apparently, but Chicago is out of the playoffs. I'm guessing it's because "See the Sol and Red Stars jog around for two hours!" isn't a recipe for FSC ratings gold.
Nevertheless, we must not quail from the truth. The Red Stars have 17 points, and two games left = maximum of 23 points. Click to continue reading...

Thursday Sol Gameday & More

100 Percent Soccer 23 July @ 11:27 AM EST

The Sol (11-2-4) can clinch the inaugural WPS regular season title with just a point on the road tonight at FC Gold Pride (3-9-3), a team that hasn't won in eight games and are 0-3 against LA this season.

Gold Pride will play on just three days rest after taking the field Sunday, while the Sol have had a considerably longer opportunity to relax, sustaining a rare 1-0 home loss July 8 to St.

Mistaken Identity

U.S. WNT 20 July @ 09:45 PM EST
More than a few times has Heather Mitts and Leslie Osborne been mistaken for each other and/or compared to each other, mostly when they are on the field, and mostly by fans and TV analysts. Sure both are very blond, have similar hair styles, similar builds (although Osborne is 5-8 and Mitts is 5-5), similar facial structure and often wear similar cute hairbands, but last night in Rochester it got taken to another level. While on break, I was able to catch up with team captain Leslie Osborne to ask her some questions on the team, playing in an upstart pro league and more.

Couple of notes in tomorrow's paper:

It's a sweltering afternoon in Carson and to call this crowd "sparse" - or even a crowd, frankly - would be charitable.

The Sol XI (4-4-2): goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc; defenders Brittney Bock, Stephanie Cox, Allison Faulk, Manya Makoski; midfielders Ali Wagner, Shannon Boxx, Aya Miyama, Camille Abily; forwards Christie Welsh, Marta.

The Grudge

Some have already mentioned "karma" in the situation of Abby Wambach's broken leg. Even in a context where it should have no bearing, it's impossible to ignore the previous controversy of team members who were angry with Hope Solo's statements at the past World Cup.
Now, do I believe that Hope Solo had a little voodoo doll of these players that she stuck pins into? Click to continue reading...

Dear Leslie,

I see that you have a love for cheese. That isn't surprising considering that you're from Brookfield, Wisconsin. The problem is, and you may not be aware of it yet, you grew up 300 miles from from Ellsworth, Wisconsin. How is that a problem? Ellsworth is the cheese curd capital of Wisconsin.
