In probably the most unexpected development of the domestic league's fourteenth round, River Plate
played with spirit and intelligence to overturn a deficit and actually win a football match on
Sunday afternoon. 1-0 down after only two-and-a-half minutes at home to Atlético Tucumán, it
looked like the same old story for River.

The latest instalment of Buenos Aires' Superclasico did little to give fans of River Plate or
Boca Juniors hope of an quick upturn in fortunes for either ofArgentina's traditional footballing
superpowers.
The 1-1 draw was played out with the trademark tenacity and tempo the fixture demands but a
point a piece does nobody any favours.

The scores and scorers of the weekend will be up in a few hours' time after the super, Tigre and
Argentinos drew 1-1 in Victoria and Colón then took over the leadership of the table in the
weekend's final match with a 2-1 win over fellow contenders San Lorenzo in El Cementerio. For now

I'm a bit late due to a computer issue the match is already 8 minutes old but is still at 0-0
presently. Open this post, and refresh periodically for sort-of-live-ish text updates on a
thoroughly middle-of-the-table superclásico. River Plate 0 0 Boca Juniors (8 mins) 8 mins: Shortly
after Nico Domingo drags a shot just [.

There's a vital grudge match in England this afternoon as Liverpool host Manchester United in the
Premier League, and also today Indian football hosts a less globally famous but no less passionate
derby with Mohun Bagan taking on East Bengal. For a change, I'm not going to bill the superclásico
as the world's biggest derby [.

Things have not been going well for River Plate this season. As one of Argentina's two biggest
clubs, there are a certain level of expectations always hanging over them and so far this season
they're falling short of those targets. Like, by a lot.
Currently in 16th place through eight matches, River reached a new low by losing 3-1 at home to
Independiente in the newly re-appointed Leonardo Astrada's second debut as the club's manager on
Monday, marking the first time they've lost at home to one of their biggest rivals in 13 years.

The eighth round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura finally ended on Monday night with the first match of
Leonardo Astrada's second spell in charge of River Plate. There wasn't even the shortest of
honeymoon periods, though Independiente took a 3-0 lead by half time and only a Marcelo Gallardo
penalty with a minute to [.

With Saturday featuring Argentina's must-win World Cup qualifier at home to Peru, the AFA have
brought forward most of the eighth round of the 2009 Torneo Apertura, rather than opt for a
two-week gap between matches. River Plate confirmed on Tuesday that former defensive lynchpin and
title-winning boss Leonardo Astrada is their new manager, and [.

Están seguros de continuar la línea después de las elecciones de diciembre, de lo contrario, a
tres meses del recambio dirigencial, la CD de Ríver no firmaría un contrato de 15 meses con un
nuevo entrenador: Leonardo Astrada. Aguilar, Julio Macchi, Domingo Díaz (vices), y Mario Israel
(secretario) comandaron la movida después de oír el arrepentimiento de Almeyda (jugador-DT), el
nombre de Pumpido y el palo y medio que pretende por adelantado Ramón Díaz.

<! article start I'm going loco down in Acapulco this week, but the Copa Libertadores doesn't
take a spring break. On Wednesday Caracas FC, who two seasons ago became the first Venezuelan side
to win a match in Argentina when they beat River Plate at this stage, pulled off another shock by
tonking Lanús 3-1.

At long last, after a summer of transfer bore-stories and ridiculous friendly matches which are
only 70 or 80 minutes long, real league football returns to the Argentine Republic on Friday night.
Following the most closely-fought championship in short tournament history, the defending champions
are a familiar name, but that's no reason to assume it'll [.

Two matches were taking place simultaneously with potentially enormous consequences for HEGS this
year. In one, Estudiantes de La Plata had the second leg of their Copa Libertadores qualifier
against Sporting Cristal of Peru, having lost the first 2-1 in Lima. In the other, Argentina's
Under 20s had to beat their cross-river rivals from Uruguay [.

Proper football has returned to Argentina with the start of the qualifying rounds for the 2009 Copa
Libertadores de América. Estudiantes de La Plata travelled to Lima where they met Sporting
Cristal, former finalists of this competition but for now just glad to be here after CONMEBOL came
so close to booting Peruvian clubs out [.

... Tigers. Estudiantes de La Plata visited Mendoza on Wednesday night to play their postponed
match away to Godoy Cruz, needing a win to keep Copa Libertadores qualification in their own hands.
They took the lead, but were pegged back in the second half and, deep into stoppage time, Godoy's
Iván Borghello got his second [.

Estudiantes de La Plata went into the second leg of the 2008 Copa Sudamericana final trailing 1-0
on aggregate, thanks to a Nilmar goal in the first leg in La Plata last Wednesday. On Wednesday
night, though, they kept hosts Internacional out in Porto Alegre and, with a second half goal from
Agustín Alayes, got [.

Estudiantes tried and tried in La Plata but couldn't get past their opponents' back line - or
rather their goalkeeper - and will have to overcome a 1-0 deficit in Porto Alegre next Wednesday.

reduced to ten men [.

The second leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-final between Argentinos Juniors and Estudiantes de La
Plata was as all reasonable people expected it to be. That is, after Argentinos' first team
thrashed Estudiantes' reserves 5-0 in the league on Sunday, it was evident to all that Estudiantes
would advance from the semi.

Estudiantes de La Plata were for the most part the better side away to Argentinos
Juniors in the first leg of the all-Argentine Copa Sudamericana semi-final on Thursday night.
At half time they led 1-0 thanks to an unlucky own goal from Argentinos
'keeper Sebastián Torrico, but in the second half Juan Ignacio Mercier got an equaliser
for the hosts to [.

There was actually some football taking place on Saturday evening, but it seemed somewhat churlish
to report it right away when the news of Emanuel Alvarez's death clearly deserved the attention. It
overshadowed an entertaining evening, with Independiente finding form again and Banfield coming
back amazingly in the closing minutes against Tigre.
