! Article Start >Newcastle United top goal scorer Kevin Nolan takes the October 2009 award for
Championship Player of the Month. Nolan seems to have settled nicely into his attacking
midfield/backup striker role and managed to pip Leicester City's Matt Fryatt to get the award.
Furthermore, Alan Smith claimed 4th place in the voting.

Popular "pit-bull" Edgar Davids might get back on football scene and as no less
than a Leicester City member. Dutchman's final decision is expected these days and
everyone in Leicester are unanimous about getting this excellent player and winner of many trophies
on their side.

I like people who are prepared to show a bit of courage now and then and stand up to the crowd.
I have no problem with people being prepared to make unpopular decisions if their motives are good
and they have really thought through the consequences.
But I am equally clear that there is a difference between this and simply being thick-skinned.

I've been very busy tonight.
Since about 8pm I have been doing the following, many simultaneously;
- Talking to the King of Rock (who happens to be a Reading fan) and his Queen (aka my lover's son
and girlfriend - who will probably support Reading in due course) in two languages (English and
American)
- Watching my lover (who also supports Reading from time to time) make the tea
- Eating the tea made by my lover (the part-time Reading fan)
- Listening to music
- Popping out for a committee meeting
- Popping back again
- Tracking the Leicester City score (0 -1 victory against.

Oh my!
What a day.
My emotions are in shreds.
Work did not present anything out of the ordinary.
My lover and I continue to live together in hippy paradise.
So why the trauma?
Well it started at about 7.50am when I heard on the radio that Gareth Southgate had been sacked
last night.

EPL Talk 06 October @ 08:48 PM EST
Transiting through London Heathrow this morning, on a journey from Florida to India, all the
talk among football supporters (who I sought out in the airports and on the plane because they
stand out in their club kits or England shirts) was not about any title contender but about
Portsmouth.

Well you've got to hand it to him, Gary Megson must have the thickest skin in professional
football. I've seen him barracked by his own fans at 4 different clubs over the years and that's
some going, even in the fickle world of the football supporter. At a Nottingham Forest game, I saw
fans come to blows trying to get to him, at Leicester I saw a fan throw his season ticket at him in
his 3rd game in charge.

Goals from David Amoo and Tony Silva saw Liverpool under-18s bounce back from successive defeats to
beat Barnsley 2-0 at the Kirkby Academy.
Rodolfo Borrell's side had been beaten by Leicester City and Nottingham Forest, but they secured
their second victory of the FA Premier Academy League campaign as Amoo, buoyed by his inclusion in
Liverpool's Champions League squad put them on the road to three points.

Goals from David Amoo and substitute Tony Silva secured the points for Rodolfo Borrell's men as
they brought a run of two straight defeats to an end with a hard-working display against the
Yorkshire outfit.
Having conceded five goals without reply against both Nottingham Forest and Leicester City,
confidence was low going into the clash with the Tykes and it was no surprise to see the Reds
youngsters make a tentative start to the proceedings.

The more observant amongst you will notice that this week's Midweek TV Preview is unnaturally
short. We would like to point out that this is not because we forgot to write most of it - merely
that next weekend's World Cup qualifiers have resulted in most domestic football being put on the
back burner for a week.

So there we were in The Fountain.
Junior Goonier joined us with 3 of his mates just after kick off.
Between us we were 3 Liverpool fans, a dyed-in-the-wool Arsenal fan and a Leicester City fan with a
slight lean towards the Arse.
Tight start with neither side able to get flowing and both making silly errors when passing.

If you watch a match this afternoon, take a moment if possible to look into the eyes of your
manager. If your team is winning you may think that you see happiness, but it's not. It's relief
and respite. If your team is losing or drawing you may just get to see a haunted soul. Ironically,
given that it is statistically likely that most managers will lose as many games as they win, the
life of the football manager is one of surviving from one match to the next.
