Tante occasioni, nessun gol

After scoring 207 goals in 7 fantastic years at Liverpool, Ian Rush left for Juventus in 1987. A
year later he was back at Anfield after finding it hard to settle in Italy. Ever since then, the
popular myth seems to be that Rushie failed at Juventus. There is, however, a difference between
failing to settle and actually failing overall, and in my view, the idea that Rush 'failed' in
Italy is totally wide of the mark.

Legendary Alabama football coach Paul "Bear" Bryant once remarked "a tie is like kissing your
sister." Still to this day - because the coach was from Alabama - no one knows whether he was
implying that ties were good or bad things. But, to this Commish, kissing your sister is always
frowned upon.

In Italy, if you want to watch all things calcio, you watch Sky. Sky shows every Serie A game
plus analysis shows and other shows about calcio. They also make some clever commercials, and some
are like the "This is Sportscenter" commercials in the USA on ESPN. Commercials after the jump.

benvenuto a Simone Tiribocchi.

So, three clubs have now officially ended their search for a new boss. Atalanta, Juventus, and
surprisingly Palermo have all appointed new managers today. Atalanta and Juventus choosing a new
manager was expected, but Palermo appointing someone new was very surprising, especially
considering that Davide Ballardini hasn't even been fired yet.

So we all know in American sports there are statistics for everything. On base percentage, field
goal percentage, runs batted in, how many times a player blows his nose at half-time, etc. Soccer
as a whole is relatively new to statistics, and especially Italian calcio. Up until a few years ago
assists weren't even recorded.

So since this is the last time we'll be seeing Serie A goals until late August, this week I
figured I'd show a video of all the goals of week 38. Since it was the last day and most teams were
just playing for fun, there were many goals, and many nice ones to boot. There is also a video of
all 25 of Zlatan Ibrahimovic's goals that won him the capocannoniere title this
season.

The last day of the season was a Sunday of goodbyes. Goodbye Maldini (retirement), goodbye
Nedved (retirement, but may come back with another team), goodbye Figo (retirement, desk job with
Inter probably), goodbye Ancelotti (Chelsea), goodbye Mazzarri (has to look for a team), goodbye
Zenga (all signs are pointing towards Lazio, but maybe taking a year off), goodbye Quagliarella
(signed for Napoli), goodbye Torino, Lecce, and Reggina (Serie B), goodbye Milito and Thiago Motta
(off to Inter), goodbye Serie A every weekend, and then the two almost goodbyes that will be
followed all summer by the press are those of Ibrahimovic and Kaka (who if reports are right will
be playing each other in La Liga next season).

Torino became the third and final team to be relegated from Serie A on Sunday when it lost 3-2 at
AS Roma in the last round, while AC Milan secured a direct spot in next season's Champions League.
Torino needed to win and hope relegation rivals Bologna dropped points to avoid joining Reggina and
Lecce in Serie B next season.

Today the list of 35 players was announced that will play in a friendly on June 6th in Pisa vs.
Northern Ireland and the upcoming FIFA Confederations Cup. 22 players were called up for the
Northern Ireland game, while 13 will skip that match and go straight to South Africa. Lippi said in
recent weeks that the roster for the Northern Ireland match would be mainly experimental and would
give national team experience to the players that merited a call-up based on their play throughout
the Serie A season.

Jose wins another title
By Glezos Alberganti, La Settimana Sportiva
After a week of speculations about Mourinho's future, Serie A 2008-09
Champions Inter went to Cagliari for what looked almost like a training
session: the Nerazzurri lost 2-1, Ibrahimovic scored his 23rd goal in his
best season and then let mid table Cagliari run away with three deserved
points.

In

Italy / Serie A
The title race is all over in Italy as Jose Mourinho's Inter side sealed the championship with a
comfortable 3-0 win over Siena yesterday. The only team that could have caught them on points,
Milan, surprisingly lost 2-1 to Udinese on Saturday leaving Inter to turn on the style against
their hosts with a display of skill and flair that the triumphant home fans lapped up.

We've expected it for most of the year, but this weekend Inter were officially crowned Campioni
D'Italia for the 17th time (now they are level with Milan for all-time Scudetto wins, but both
clubs are still 10 behind Juventus). For those that don't understand the banner. "Il Biscione" (the
snake) is the traditional symbol of Inter, and it says "Il Biscione is the champion
again".

Due to Livorno's loss on Friday, Bari were mathematically promoted to Serie A and will return to
paradise after 8 long years of Serie B. The last time Bari were in Serie A they had players like
Antonio Cassano and Simone Perrotta on the books. This season they were expected to at least
contend for a play-off spot but nobody expected them to dominate Serie B.
