West London giants Chelsea have finally completed the signing of England centre back Gary Cahill
from fellow Premier League side Bolton Wanderers after a protracted transfer negotiation with the
player over personal terms. Having completed a medical examination at the weekend, Cahill now joins
Chelsea's star studded squad as they look to get their title challenge back on track - and at just
26 may be viewed by the club as a long term replacement for fellow England defender John Terry at
Stamford Bridge.
Well that did take long. About 48 hours after firing Neil Warnock, QPR have hired Mark Hughes as
their new manager.
Hughes told QPR.co.uk:
"It's a great feeling to be back in football and to be the manager of QPR. I'm fully aware of
the challenge in the short and long term and I am genuinely excited about the ambition of the
owners.

Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessy was the hero as he kept the Arsenal onslaught at bay. Despite
playing the last 15 minutes a man down Wolves gained a valuable point in their Premier League
survival race with a 1-1 draw at the Emirates today.
Wigan Athletic 0-0 Liverpool | Premier League match report
Liverpool intensified their fight with the Football Association at the DW Stadium but the more
immediate target escaped unharmed. While Kenny Dalglish and his players rallied around Luis Suárez
in the wake of his eight-match ban for racially abusing Patrice Evra, potentially landing
themselves in further trouble with the authorities in the process, they missed the chance to draw
level with Chelsea as Wigan Athletic became the latest beneficiaries of their profligacy.
It was billed as a match in which the losing manager would get fired, and if that is the case
then it will be a much happier Christmas in the Coyle household this season than the Kean one as
Bolton beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 in a relegation six pointer.
The result means Blackburn replace Bolton at the foot of the Premier League, and Rovers will be
bottom at Christmas with only one team avoiding relegation from that position.
Blackburn Rovers fans jeered and booed Steve Kean On Saturday despite a 4-2 victory over Premier
League new boys Swansea City.
Apart from demonstrating their displeasure during a win, the most unusual thing was that they
also greeted a a goal celebration with boos. Four goal hero Yakubu ran over to his manager to hug
him after scoring for Rovers and the fans showed their disquiet at this.

Recreating 'Reservoir Dogs' could not lift the boys
After Blackburn Rovers' exit from the League Cup at the hands of Cardiff City on Tuesday night,
Steve Kean suggested his side had "forfeited" the game to concentrate on Premier League
survival.
And, while Tottenham are approaching the halfway point of the season with the opportunity to
strengthen their hold on a place in the top four, Harry Redknapp showed no signs of surrendering
the club's place in the Europa League against PAOK ahead of the clash at White Hart Lane.
Tuesday evening saw the start of another Carling cup campaign for many Premier League sides, but
yet again the relevance of the competition is being called into question.
For the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United this competition has helped clubs to develop
their talented youth players over the past decade, but for teams who are battling against
relegation come the end of the season it could just prove a hindrance in their fight for
survival!

1. Title candidates stumble and struggle. Good news for the rest of the league:
Mario Götze has off-days. Dortmund have a bogey team and are perfectly beatable. The good news for
Dortmund: their biggest rivals still have some way to go to be a serious threat. Both Leverkusen
and Bayern just about grinded out their first unconvincing wins.
Well, no-one can say that he's not ambitious. Steve Bruce's summer in the transfer market has
been one of the most interesting of all Premier League clubs, with a clutch of signings which hint
at a manager that is no longer satisfied with perpetual Premier League survival and mid-table
security, and would like to push on towards something a little more substantial.

Marc Bircham has told talkSPORT that there is more to Queens Park Rangers than just Adel Taarabt.
He that will not apply new remedies must expect new evils; for time is the
greatest innovator.
William D. Leahy said the bomb wouldn't go off; Lord Kelvin thought that heavier-than-air flying
machines were impossible; Charlie Chaplin was convinced cinema was little more than a fad; Neville
Chamberlain promised it would be peace in our time and Bill Gates insisted 640K ought to be enough
for anybody.
The date was Sunday, May 22nd 2011. The day and indeed the whole week prior to it was the closest,
most intriguing Barclays Premier League survival battle in years – possibly ever. The publicity

Hands up if you saw that result coming. Hey. You there are the back... put your hand down, you
little fibber!
Well, okay, Arsenal have really gone off the boil as this season has lumbered to its conclusion,
but I can't honestly claim to have expected a win today. A draw perhaps. I'd have been delighted
with the point that would have finally guaranteed our Premier League survival regardless of other
results.

Here is a Demba Ba interview with Simon Hart from today's Independent. I'm reproducing it here for
posterity...
Ba backs West Ham to find the fighting spirit needed to survive by Simon Hart
Had things worked out differently for Demba Ba, he might be preparing to face Manchester City in
the FA Cup final at Wembley in a couple of weeks.
Salomon Kalou's goal a minute from time helped Chelsea beat spurs 2-1 and close the gap on
leaders Manchester United to three points, with the two sides set to meet at Old Trafford next
weekend in a title decider.
Sandro gave Tottenham the lead when he fired an unstoppable half-volley past Petr Cech from 25
yards after 19 minutes.

In a bit of an upset, Scott Parker became the first West Ham United player since Booby Moore to
be voted Footballer of the Year in 1962/64. Parker, whose Hammers team are in a relegation battle
was voted 2011 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.
What makes Parker's award even more impressive is that West Ham have been really poor this
season, and the head into their last five games of the campaign one place off the bottom of the
table.
There is a bit of the politician in all football managers. Most relish issuing the media with
manifestos full of worthy pledges about raising coaching standards, enhancing youth development and
eliminating financial waste from transfer budgets.
Such promises sound good but a mixture of human weakness and the English game's free-market system
makes honouring them tough.
Ireland international striker Kevin Doyle has set his sights on playing for Ireland in their three
internationals at the end of the season.
Doyle has basically ruled himself out of the remainder of Wolves' battle for Barclays Premier
League survival after suffering a knee ligament injury when Ireland beat Macedonia in Dublin last
month.
A feeling of nervousness hangs heavy in the air at Villa Park this afternoon. The four teams
below Aston Villa have already lost this weekend, but home supporters may already point to their
primary concern being that there are as few as four teams below them in the Premier League at this
point of the season in the first place.
Wayne Rooney scored a second-half hat-trick as Manchester United came from 2-0 down at half-time
to beat West Ham United 4-2 and stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven
points.
The London side led 2-0 at the break thanks to a pair of Mark Noble penalties, but Rooney got
United back into the game on 65 minutes.
It will be a fight to the finish as several top sides clash for Europa League survival. There will
be proud Portuguese faces in the competition should all go as planned for Benfica, Braga and Porto.
All three could go through to the quarter-finals to make the Iberian nation the most represented.
Braga's 1-0 victory over Barclays Premier League side Liverpool left Kenny Dalglish frowning at
their first European defeat under his charge, though the manager will feel confident of being able
to overturn the deficit at Anfield.

I've been off-line for most of the last month – my PC is older than my jokes and I can't
afford a replacement on this money. And I was hopeful that, beyond Plymouth, there wouldn't be much
football financial mess to cover. Some hope. There was good news. The fact that West Ham's losses
were only £20.

Blackpool have turned down a written transfer request today from their captain Charlie Adam.
Adam's agent Kenny Moyes earlier confirmed that "Charlie has handed in a transfer request", but
Blackpool boss Holloway later revealed chairman Karl Oyston had rejected it.
"The decision to reject the transfer request was the chairman's decision," he said.
The January transfer window has received one of its biggest shocks in recent times as Sunderland
striker Darren Bent has handed in a written transfer request in order to sanction an £18million
move to Aston Villa.
If this had been mooted last summer it wouldn't have seemed that much of a shock.
Martin O'Neill is still being touted as the man to replace the unlucky Avram Grant at the helm of
West Ham United. The former Aston Villa manager is reported to be mulling over the possibility of
being the Irons' new manager.
Avram Grant has always been unlucky in the English Premier League.
