Their Words "Now, I've been in football for nearly 20 years and I have a good understanding of
relationships with Managers. I do agree that the Manager is the most important person in a football
club or an organisation like this, but there are moments when the Board and the Chairman have to
step up to the plate when strong leadership is required.
Not a surprise to hear that Sevilla have hired Jose Miguel Gonzalez, aka Michel, to become their
next coach after the firing of Marcelino Garcia Toral on Monday.
Michel will automatically receive an extension to the contract should he guide the 11th-placed
side to UEFA Champions League qualification.

Philadelphia Union
Several Union players talk about preseason training at YSC SPorts last week. The team landed in
Orlando on Sunday.
Danny Califf, acknowledging that only he and Brian Carroll are the only players remaining on the
Union who are older than 27, tells MLSsoccer.
There was a time under the soon to be booted nicest man in football when Sydney won 1-0 - boring
but they won.
Then in season 2, they lost 1-0. More boring and more frustrating.
Now in Season 3 they lose, by 3, 4 or 5 and that's at home.
Mr Lavicka might be nice - but he's a pretty ordinary coach.
Okay. It's not just me. I've asked a few people if this thing looks like it should be worn with a
kilt and have 100% agreement.
Wait a minute...Isn't Beckham intent on leading Team Great Britain at the London Olympics this
summer? What better way to get the Scots on board with his leadership, eh?
U.S. Men's National Team head coach JURGEN KLINSMANN:
On Jermaine Jones and what went in to decision to make captain:
"It was certainly a difficult situation for Jermaine with the suspension in Germany. I spoke with
his coach and the club and we agreed it was beneficial to all of us to have him come in.

Coverage of the United States 1-0 win over Venezuela. Juergen Klinsmann puts U.S. soccer on fast
track - from The LA Times' Kevin Baxter: "This is a different level," Klinsmann says of the
international game. Jones showing he's worth risk for US Soccer - from FoxSportsArizona.com's Tyler
Lockman: It was the leadership that was unexpected.
Almost a year ago, in the Evening Standard of 20 January 2011, Arsene Wenger was quoted at
saying:
We have a shared leadership in our team, but I believe Fabregas is an outstanding leader,
especially when you consider he is 23 years old, with personality and character and Van Persie as
well.
With Victory showing sides of improvement last week, and Harry Kewell turning in another quality
performance tonight's game should be a belter.
Big crowd, great stadium and lots of footballers on the park.
If Victory can seal their defence, the team could gain some serious confidence and climb the
ladder.
The owner and chairman of Dutch side FC Twente, Joop Munsterman, has spoken about how pleased he is
to bring former manager Steve McClaren back to the club. Under McClaren's leadership the club won
the Eredivisie title in style in 2010 and Mr Munsterman is confident the former England boss can
recreate that success.
Kenny Dalglish is out of touch over Luis Suarez saga
In difficult times, football looks to its great men for leadership. Sometimes they let us down.
Sir Alex Ferguson — though he was just plain ‘Alex' back then — failed us when he allowed
Manchester United to withdraw from the FA Cup in 2000.
By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (Jan 3, 2012) US Soccer Players -- In the first edition of the new
year, Tony looks one organization getting new leadership (not the Rapids), the Pan American Maccabi
games, and another organization jumping on the retro name train. Also, did Aston Villa's earlier
win against Chelsea make up for Monday's loss to Swansea?
A couple days after seemingly every news outlet in Sweden announced the signing, the Seattle
Sounders made it official: Adam Johansson has joined the team on a multi-year deal. Johansson has
played most of his professional career with Swedish power IFK Goteburg and has seen semi-regular
time with the Swedish national team since making his international debut in 2009 against the United
States and playing in three World Cup qualifiers that year.
Not written much about the current mess in Indonesia for a while but did you know nothing has been
sorted? Hard to believe, I know. The current leadership of the PSSI is proving to be deeply
unpopular even among its own members who want to hold a special meeting some time next year. FIFA
has given PSSI until early next year to sort the mess or face sanctions.
On the details of the case itself, we will have to see the full details of the FA's
investigation before passing any comment. We can, however, say with a degree of certainty that the
reaction was as hysterical as might have been predicted and that oil has been
poured onto an already raging fire by an official club statement from Liverpool Football Club
itself which the club may yet come to repent at leisure.

Ha ha. What crisis?
Playing the league's bottom team at a time like this was always likely to be one of those tricky
games. On the one hand, you would rather be playing a bad team than a good one; on the other, lose
this one... doesn't bear thinking about.
Anyway, it didn't happen, owing to two marvellous goals involving Bryan Ruiz's wand of a left
foot.

When Cesc Fabregas betrayed Arsenal to return to his boyhood club, many thought it would spell
trouble for the Gunners as they had lost their inspirational skipper. Then, Van Persie stepped up.
Goals, assists, flair and leadership were provided by the Dutchman. More importantly, Van Persie
gave Arsenal his heart and loyalty.
A day after the Revolution declined the options on seven players, the team opened its wallet for
long-tenured goalkeeper Matt Reis by signing him to deal that will keep in Foxboro for his 10th
consecutive season. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, per MLS policy.
In 2011, Reis made 27 starts, recorded five shutouts and posted a 1.
Honduras national team coach Luís Suárez has had a personal blog since June on which he writes
about his experiences with the Honduran team and shares his viewpoints on coaching and leadership.
I particularly like his post on the type of football that he likes and doesn't like. If you
understand Spanish, it will be worth your time reading the posts and even if you don't, he uses
fairly standard Spanish so a machine translation would be sufficient.
US teammates Timothy Chandler and Jermaine Jones will square off on opposite sides of the ball

Hello loyal readers,
My name is Scott Kessler and I am the Managing Editor of the Brotherly Game. Today I come to you
asking for your opinions on how to improve this site. I have run the Brotherly Game as the Managing
Editor since early January of this, bringing me close to a year's worth of leadership and writing
on the Philadelphia Union in this capacity.
I spent my day in used car shopping hell on a supposed day off ahead of MLS Cup this
weekend.
The dealership managed to misplace my driver's license (eventually found atop a filing cabinet
after a protracted hunt) and fail to actually engrave an alleged $289 anti-theft window etching VIN
(until we pointed it out to them) but, a used 2011 Honda Accord that I hope my wife appreciates was
the result.
FC Barcelona strengthen their leadership on the field of new technology with a strategic agreement

The following was inspired by Lalo's latest comment. He makes good points about leadership,
and poses questions about the work on this blog. What follows is not intended as a full response,
but I preferred to post here instead of in the comments.
On the statement: "Leadership is doing the right thing".
