On the front page of ESPN.com around 12:30, the lead story was Arsenal draw with Sunderland. Small
problem. The World Wide Leader in sports put a picture of the Championship game between Charlton
and Birmingham with the story. How can u get this wrong especially since they have been promoting
the season starting so much.
In a sudden but not wholly unexpected move, the Feline Association (FA) today detailed its
intentions to oppose handshakes of any form in the animal world.
"We have all been watching the kind of hatred and vitriol this simple gesture is causing in the
human world", purred one of the fat cats of the FA at their London HQ "and we are concerned that
such behaviour will soon spread to the animal world.
Two of the more controversial things in the soccer world combined yesterday for an early
Christmas present to both soccer bloggers and Don Garber.
In an interview with Arsenal Magazine (and reported on The Telegraph website), Arsenal manager
Arsene Wenger complained about fixture back-up due to inclement weather and how it impacts his
squad (and other clubs too of course).
Flexibility wins games and the best way to get it is to blend energy with savvy. DC United Coach
Ben Olsen put out a nicely blended squad against Toronto and its savvy members made the exact right
adjustments to a hard working opposing side which had clogged the middle and kept the game mostly
in United's end.

Like any sport where the object is to put a ball or puck in a net, soccer is all about movement,
misdirection, and space, executed with speed, strength, and skill. The more different faces a team
can present to their opponents, the more effective a team's attack.
DC United presents opponents with unique challenges.
DC United opened its season against four of the stronger teams in MLS and the results until
Friday night's were predictable. Two losses followed by a tie showed that the team had some
defensive competence, but lacked scoring punch. Then FC Dallas came to town.
With Chris Pontius still a half step short of full effectiveness and Andy Najar still away with
Honduras, United Coach Ben Olsen had to rely on two young wingers to make good things happen.
It was a classic opening game. The fans came hoping to see signs of a rebirth with new
acquisitions and a team style that had finally gelled. They went away disappointed as DC United
remained mired in the same ineffective scoring rut that ended the 2011 season.
Kansas City was superior in possession and earned far more good shooting chances.
A three goal first half by the Chicago Fire sparked the visiting team to a 3-2 victory over the
struggling LA Galaxy on Sunday night. It was the highest number of goals the Fire have scored all
season. Recent designated player signing Freddie Ljungberg replaced Marco Pappa in the 57th minute,
but didn't make much of an impact as the Fire decided to absorb the Galaxy's pressure and relied on
the counter-attack.
The Philadelphia Union return to Chester for a second game in their new digs as the season
really starts to heat up. Games vs. San Jose, Celtic FC, Toronto FC, and English giants Manchester
United highlight a homestand that will help Union fans get over their World Cup withdrawal. First
up, however, will be to solve a hardworking San Jose squad that sees itself above .
Every season the Sports Business Journal provides an excellent in-depth look at the upcoming
Major League Soccer season. A link to the excellent grouping of stories is here. The lead story
is about the new relationship between NBC and MLS.
In August MLS and NBCÂ announced a three year television rights agreement that will put Major
League Soccer on the Peacock and its affiliated sports channel from 2012-2014.
Morning. Today's date is 11.11.11. Unless you live in the US in which case it's 11.11.11.
Weirdos, putting the month and day in the wrong order.
And today is also kind of special because if you take the year you were born, add the number of
the day you were born, then add 30, divide by 2, multiply it by your shoe size and then take away
how long it's been since Sp*rs won the league then you get .
It is the time of year when votes are cast in Major League Soccer. These include the VW Most
Valuable Player, Allstate Goalkeeper of the year Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year, referee
awards and more (there are less with sponsors this year as compared to last year). We cast our
votes earlier this week and will certainly report on the winners when they are announced.
Not even an opponent scoring three goals can stop the red-hot Seattle Sounders these days.
Behind goals from Alvaro Fernandez, Roger Levesque, Fredy Montero and Mauro Rosales, the
Sounders knocked off the defending champion Colorado Rapids 4-3 at home on Saturday in a thrilling
match. Seattle had to come back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits, just as they had against Portland last
Sunday.
Foxboro, MA Tonight marks the beginning of the 2011 HerbaLife World Football Challenge, when the
New England Revolution take on the 19-time English Champions and 2010/11 UEFA Champions League
Runner-Up, Manchester United. Â For fans new to the World Football Challenge (which are quite a
few, seeing as this is only the second time the competition has been held) have seemed a little
unsure of the "format" or whether it was an actual tournament at all.
Before we get started today, just want to remind everyone I'll be making the trek down to Houston
on Wednesday to cover the US's Gold Cup semifinal against Panama (and peep some of the Mexico match
as well), so keep it locked to NSC this week for some exclusive content. Now. "Gotcha!" Our lead
story could easily go in Worst of the Worst, but I've decided to forgo a game of the week tonight
b.
Houston is getting a stadium, for real and for true. This is big news, since we still don't have a
league where everyone plays in their own building (those left standing on the wall without SSS
dance partners are DC, New England, and San Jose). A tax zone vote of some type, the last hurdle
before the Dynamo could break ground on the project, passed this week.
ASN Philly has an interview with potential top five pick in this year's SuperDraft Zarek
Valentin.
Zarek Valentin leaves the Akron Zips as a 19-year old NCAA Champion with boundless potential and
a near future, at least, that lies in Major League Soccer. The Lancaster, PA native has left
quite the footprint in only two seasons, one that has been duplicated on the international level
with Thomas Rongen's U-20s as well.

Earlier in the season we conducted an interview with Greg Lalas, the editor-in-chief of
MLSSoccer.com. The trials and tribulations of the launch of the new site are well documented, but
there has been some significant improvement over the course of the year. Putting those issues
aside, we thought it worth taking a look at some of the business aspects of the site.
It is the time of year when votes are cast in Major League Soccer. These include the VW Most

Rookie Shawn Johnson has effectively ended Andrew Dykstra's bid for a starting position in
Chicago as he kept the Fire but it was another goalkeeper who stole the show in Week 22. Unlikely
squads continue to roll – as in New England and Colorado – while familiar faces collect three
points (Real Salt Lake and Columbus).
Major League Soccer parity is starting to show as the Galaxy lost yet again to a hungry Kansas
City squad while the Crew lost some ground to New York after tying Dallas in Columbus. In the
process, the Hoops broke a relatively surprising record, a ten game road unbeaten streak. Could
Dallas be an MLSÂ Cup contender this season or will there be a late-season break of form?
On the last weekend of World Cup action, Major League Soccer had a full schedule of games on
tap. There were several results of importance, perhaps none bigger than the Landon Donovan-less LA
Galaxy loss at the New England Revolution. In Seattle, the young Sounders provided a spark but it
was 19-year-old Miguel Montano's red card that changed the balance of the game and allowed FC
Dallas to steal a late 1-1 draw from Seattle.
Last year around this time, when the Union lined up Celtic FC and Manchester United a week
apart, the break from the MLS regular season seemed a welcome one. Philadelphia was sputtering in
the middle of its inaugural campaign, the baby steps they had been making beginning to take their
physical and emotional toll.
Owen and Macheda Did Most of the Damage for United
Foxboro, MA Â Federico Macheda once again stole the show against MLS opposition on Wednesday
night, scoring twice to lead Premier League champions Manchester United past MLS side New England
Revolution 4-1 in front of a spirited crowd of 51,523 at Gillette Stadium.
So, if you haven't seen the Kansas City Star today or you don't live in Kansas City to see it, we
thought we'd take a couple of pictures for you. Our win over Manchester United was the LEAD STORY
on the front page A1. It was then the lead story on Sports 1, and we had a full page of sidebars
and related stories inside the sports section, next to a full-page ad for 2011 season tickets going
on sale.
I've had about eleven hours to think about the results of the 2022 World Cup announcement, read
my peers, and come to grips with the failure of the USSF to land the World Cup. And I think I
have a handle on my thoughts and emotions about today. I watched the announcement via the EPL
Talk live blog and Twitter, so I was spared the gut-punch of seeing the card with Qatar on it.
A Brazilian national team missing several starters from the World Cup easily defeated a "B+" U.S.
side on Tuesday night at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Teenage phenom Neymar
and Alexandre Pato scored first half goals for the visitors, whose victory never really seemed in
doubt outside of a chance by Landon Donovan in the opening minutes.
For those that missed tonight's NBC Action News broadcast at 10pm tonight, I was interviewed for
what ended up being the lead story for the broadcast tonight, the Wizards-United game on Sunday and
it's potential impact on KC and it's bid for the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.
In a game that counted little if anything in the grand scheme of things, Thierry Henry dazzled a
crowd of 20,312 at Red Bull Arena on Thursday night, beating his man off the dribble, playing
passes into space and ultimately scoring his first goal in a Red Bulls kit. Surely this is the
start of great things to come for the Thierry Henry reign at Red Bull Arena.
Our man, FIFA-accredited photographer Bahaadeen Al Qazwini, was at the World Cup finals in Soccer
City, Johannesburg where he documented Spain's triumphant receipt of the FIFA World Cup trophy.

The Puerto Rico Islanders put a serious dent in the LA Galaxy's hopes for multiple trophies this
season, decisively defeating the Galaxy 4-1 in the opening leg of its preliminary round matchup
Tuesday night at the Home Depot Center. "We got beat soundly tonight," Galaxy head coach
Bruce Arena said.
Week Sixteen (or Week Seventeen, depending how you look at it) confirmed the Edson Buddle and
Landon Donovan still deserve their title as best duo in the league but, as it was, the Galaxy
looked relatively vulnerable. It was Buddle and Donovan who bailed them out late vs. San Jose.
Kasey Keller showed he still has it at 40 and can come back from a bad match to make sure his
Sounders gets the three points they need.
Week 15's Best XI has several new inclusions as we hit the halfway point of what has proven to be a
very interesting season. Kansas City, however, looking lost for the past several weeks, rode the
quality play of their shotstopper to a much-needed week of results. The Union found more late game
dramatics to secure three points at PPL Park, led by a fan favorite who just celebrated an
impressive milestone.
Sebastien Le Toux strengthened his bid for an All-Star spot with a goal and an assist as the
Union got back to their winning ways in front of 17,251 at PPL Park. Breton Bonnette reports from
Chester, Pa.
The New York Red Bulls played another listless performance Saturday night and this time were
punished by an efficient Columbus Crew squad.
The lead story this morning was going to be that West Ham United is interested in a loan deal for
Andy Carroll, but West Ham co-owner David Gold has denied that the club has made any contact. Oh
well, that ...

Last week on Twitter, Kei Kamara and Teal Bunbury tweeted at Cincinnati Bengals' wide receiver,
Chad Ochocinco, saying he should come train with Sporting KC now that the NFL has locked the
players out. I'd avoided comment on the topic at the time because I figured it was just going to go
away with out anything so I really did not want to get on it.
The lead story on the BBC Football website this afternoon may have given Liverpool supporters
(who, it has to be said, are now getting close enough to feelings of perpetual panic to be able to
warrant the soubriquet "long-suffering") further palpitations. After the confirmation that a sale
of the the club to John W Henry's New England Sports Ventures had been agreed, the BBC is now
reporting that the ongoing legal wrangles that have inevitably followed the confirmation of the
sale agreement may yet force the club into administration and that this may mean that the club
incurs a nine point deduction.
