BANGKOK POST
The Thai football team yesterday offered apologises to fans for their early exit at the SEA
Games.
The squad returned home yesterday after three defeats and only one win in Group A at the
biennial event.
"I apologise to our fans for our failure," said coach Prapol Pongpanich.

I posted yesterday on Twitter my concerns over the likely attendance at the Bung Karno for the Iran
game in a week when the Indonesian Under 23 team were wowing fans at the SEA Games.
Timor Leste surprised everyone at the SEA Games by winning their opening games against Laos and
Philippines.
Now they need to ensure their locally based players, deprived of a league, get the chance to play
competitive football on a regular basis.
And that is the main idea behind my latest column in the Jakarta Globe!
Finally added images from last night's SEA Games fixtures. Philippines get thumped by Myanmar while
Lamnao stars for Laos against Timor Leste.

No time for a match report but some pictures from an exciting game can be found on Asian Football
Pictures.
Basically Philippines took the lead, Laos went 2-1 up then the Philippines scored two very late
goals to secure the win

Thailand desperately want to win back the football gold medal after they were embarrassingly
eliminated in the first round of the previous tournament in Laos in 2009.
In their final group game in Vientiane, eight-time defending champions Thailand only needed to
avoid defeat against Malaysia to progress.

Cambodia's sole target this year in international football has been the SEA Gams which start next
month, hopefully, in Jakarta. The national team coach came out and said several months ago the
World Cup Qualifiers, against Laos, weren't important, his eye was on regional glory.
To help prepare for that regional glory, they have been drawn with Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia
and Singapore so the definition of glory maybe an interesting one, Cambodia have played teams like
a bunch of Korean students.

I'm not sure when the SEA Games draw will be made, probably the day before the games start, but
Indonesia may well be hoping not to be drawn against Laos.
It was only last December that pacy winger Oktavianus Maniani was being talked about as the great
new hope of Indonesian football along with Irfan Bachdim. The Sriwijaya winger was a bit of an
unknown and thrown against Malaysia and Laos in the AFF Cup he created an immediate impact and,
along with Bachdim and Riedl, helped make Indonesian football 'sexy' with the masses.

Former Indonesian national team coach Alfred Riedl has returned to coach Laos for the SEA Games.
Riedl is a familiar figure in South East Asia having also coached Vietnam and last year he led
Indonesia to the ASEAN Football federation Cup Final, losing to Malaysia.
He was sacked by the new PSSI leadership for some strange reason, was it something like they
couldn't find the contract, and there have been calls for his return as Indonesia's World Cup
campaign fizzles but it won't be happening now!

Manchester United have signed two new lucrative commercial deals, including the announcement of
logistics company DHL as their first training kit sponsor.
Yes you read that right. DHL will sponsor United's training kit in a four-year deal worth a
reported £40 million. I am not aware of any other sports team in the world that has been able to
sell sponsorship on the club's playing kit and training kit to different sponsors.

FIFA.com - 2014 FIFA World... - Comment - Like Vietnam, Bangladesh and Cambodia are in comfortable
position to advance to the second round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ in
Asia, with respective wins over Macau, Pakistan and Laos.
The first year I started writing about Thai Premier League was back in 2008 and I recall mocking
endlessly the lack of goals in that now unrecognisable league.
There were 16 teams in the league that year, the TPL was won by PEA (before they moved to Buriram)
with Chonburi finishing second.
Just three teams scored more than 40 goals in that year (BEC Tero 50, Krung Thai Bank & Chula
Sinthana 47) while eight teams averaged a goal or less per game.
