Janicki's mustache [you can help!]

Behind the Badge 09 November @ 09:35 AM EST

D.C. United defender Greg Janicki is asking for help in raising money for Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He writes:

"A lot of you know I grew a ridiculously stupid mustache this year that was just for fun. Now I figured I might as well grow it back for a good cause throughout the month of November.

One reason why football (soccer) will might not be a major success in the U.S.

Soccer Source 14 October @ 12:06 PM EST
Fellow soccer bloggers Caught Offside yesterday offered up seven reasons why football (soccer) will never be a major success in the U.S. It got lost in all of the hullabaloo over Charlie Davies' accident but I wanted to take the time to address it now.
First things first: Caught Offside are wrong on all but one count, namely that the sport is not stat-intensive enough to become a major deal in the U. Click to continue reading...

Players, coaches - are you "Tweet", "Plurk" enough?

BoLASEPaKO - a simple view on Singapore Soccer 07 October @ 07:53 PM EST
The general mindset of most local clubs officials and players is to keep "things within four walls" and it's not very often we see war-of-words trading across feuding parties to ensure the mood of solidarity in the local football fraternity (because of the "Code of Conduct" I guess).
Personally, nothing wrong with that as nobody would want to see a WWE-styled reality show since the main product is the game itself. Click to continue reading...

The Old Man of Senegal.

Avenell Road 04 October @ 06:18 AM EST

Has the transfer window opened again? I awoke to see the headlines about Arsenal being linked to three players. Bolton's Gary Cahill just as a back up centre half, he could be just the answer especially with Johan out until February with a knee injury, Song our other back up centre half going to the Africa Cup of Nations.

He has expressed himself with the press on a range of topics. Most recently, he appeared with ESPN and answered questions regarding his notorious outburst towards fans from the stands.

Armstrong Channels Maldini: Hangs Tough on Mont Ventoux

Letters From Vagabondia 25 July @ 07:59 PM EST
American Lance Armstrong seems to be channeling Paolo Maldini these days by hanging tough with athletes who were born at least a decade after him. Today on the Tour de France's gruelling 20th stage ride up Mont Ventoux, Armstrong beat back several attacks to cement his third place standing for the ride into Paris tomorrow. Footy Thoughts in the Middle of Summer

Soccer Statistics 20 July @ 06:50 AM EST
I'm currently sitting in my summer apartment in a secret Mediterranean coastal city. It is 35 degrees celsius outside, and I've decided to take a day off from the beach and watch Tour de France highlights on my summer channel of Eurosport. For the uninitiated, with six stages remaining, Alberto Contador of Spain is in the lead (Spain appear to be the champions of sport at the moment), followed by Lance Armstrong in second and Bradley Wiggins of the UK in third. Jason Culina: Why?

Football in the Capital 16 July @ 05:38 PM EST
Whatever level of sport you play at stepping down at the peak of your career to play at a lower level is practically unheard of. These guys are born winners and focus on winning and everything that goes with it.
Craig Johnston stopped completely at 28, but can you imagine Ronaldo stepping down to division 2 anytime soon, Lance Armstrong, Tiger Woods, or Roger Federer at their peak stepping down to local tournaments only. Click to continue reading...

John Hartson undergoes emergency surgery

Soccerblog 15 July @ 07:49 AM EST

John Hartson, the former Arsenal striker who this week was diagnosed with testicular cancer with metastasis to the brain and now lungs, underwent emergency neurosurgery to relieve pressure on his brain. The Swansea hospital he was operated in released this statement:

"He is currently being cared for by the critical care team at Morriston and is receiving round-the-clock care aiming to stabilise his condition.

Twohundredpercent 13 July @ 04:21 PM EST

That retirement comes at such a young age is one of the curious contradictions of football. No sooner has a professional player reached his prime than he is sliding down the other side of his career arc. The overwhelming majority vanish quietly into the distance to retrain as sports scientists, run pubs, or do any one of a myriad of other jobs out of necessity after the end of their playing careers.

Greg Akcelrod: footballing con man

Dirty Tackle 30 June @ 07:56 PM EST

Last week, CSKA Sofia one of the biggest clubs in Bulgaria flew a Frenchman named Greg Akcelrod in for a trial (video) where they're training in Austria. Ackelrod boasted of time in PSG's reserve squad and interest from a laundry list of clubs across Europe over the last few years interest he generated through a level of lies and fakery that make him the world's foremost footballing con man.
