There were some around the Sounders message boards and blogs that thought I underrated the USL
players. At the end of the year though, none were starters. But one fell from being a starter
(though likely just due to the health of other players) and another worked his way up from token
nod to the past to becoming a key player on the club during the last third of the season.

Damn, if ever there was a reason to broadcast a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match that is not the final
this is it. Portland won their second round match last night vs. some PDL side or other and will
now host sworn enemy Seattle Sounders at PGE Park on July 1st. We thought the Rose City-Jet City
rivalry was on ice on until 2011 but I guess beef waits for no one, least of all the guy making
schedules for the USOC.

DC United's 5-3 win over Red Bull NY on Wednesday means the 2008 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup champions
will have a shot at defending their title. United becomes the first team to advance through the MLS
Play-In. Going with a mix of regulars and reserves, DC got on the board early and often. Chris

US Soccer has announced the schedule for this year's Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The Wizards qualified
to automatically enter in the 3rd round this year thanks to their finish last season. This means
the Wizards didn't have to play in any qualifying games like they had the past two years. The team
now knows that their first game in the US Open Cup will be on June 30th.

40 clubs will participate in the 2009 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. With the teams that finished in the
bottom half of the Major League Soccer standings in 2008 currently qualifying through a play-in,
the United States Soccer Federation announced the rest of the schedule on Thursday. This year's
final will be on September 2nd.

Wednesday marks the first in many rounds of tournament competition for the Red Bulls, as MLS
teams vie for placement in the US Open Cup. Eight teams will go head to head in a bracket system,
and the final two will officially qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
Currently, only Colorado and DC United have advanced to the second phase of this "Play in"
tournament.
