Right about now is a probably good time to start another serious discussion of finding a better way
to determine a winner in a soccer match of enormous magnitude besides the dreaded PK shootout.
Someplace else.
Not that I'm a fan of the thing - far from it. It's just that the gut punch delivered to the Fire
and their fans last night after 120 minutes of emotion, drama and desire seems worthy of something
more than just another tedious discussion of the rules of the game.

1 for 2 isn't bad when you're picking Soccer matches and last night the boys from Salt Lake came
through and defeated the Fire 5-4 in Penalty Kicks. I'd take total credit for picking this one,
but RSL didn't manhandle the Fire like I thought they would, but now I think we something else we
need to discuss concerning the two teams who will vie for the MLS cup this season.

Ok folks, I know Soccer is a gentlemen's game, but I really need you to follow my logic
here.
Manchester City's Emmanuel Adebayor was charged with improper conduct after celebrating a goal
during a defeat of his old club Arsenal last week. I know, I know, taunting and excessive
celebration are a problem in sports, but I'm not understanding this at all.

One hundred fifty-six fans came out early this morning to watch UT host the Grand Valley Lakers
(1-0-1). The match didn't start well for the Spartans (0-1-1) and went downhill from there, with UT
being shutout 4-0.
An own goal by UT in the second minute was a omen of things to come, as the Lakers out shot the
Spartans 23-9 in the match.

Outside of the World Cup, the United States' 2-0 victory over Spain Wednesday was its most
impressive victory ever.
Torres, Villa, Xavi, Fabergas, Puyol, Pique, Casillas — these aren't very good players,
they're the best in the world. Even with the loss, the reigning European Champions and No.

It's funny how there is all this banter between the panelist when they are talking about dynasties
in other sports like the Lakers, the Yankees etc. But once Uncle Tommy brings up Manchester United
sh*t just gets sooo quiet; you knew he'd lose them once he dropped the word "gaffer".

This week's eight matches averaged just over 13,100. Last year's week 12 included a visit by
Beckham to San Jose. The game was at Oakland Alameda and drew over 39,800.
After 92 matches, the league is drawing 1,479 fewer per game than the first 92 games last year, a
9.1% decrease. On the up side, the average was 2,000 better than the corresponding week in 2005
which also had World Cup Qualifiers.

One thing I try to do in my never-ending quest for understanding is read about other sports.
Basketball currently holds some interest because they're wrestling with similar issues at the
moment. To whit, this quote from a recent chat at Baseball Prospectus. Yeah, a basketball chat

Okay so I do, I really do want to be rooting for Obama but what's with this latest appointment?
GE's defender on environmental issues, Ignacia Moreno, has been hired to do the legal stuff for
EPA? How did Obama explained this decision, I'm wondering. It kind of gives me a weird feeling in
my stomach.

First, the poem - a beauty by Mark Strand from today's Writer's Almanac ...
My Name
by Mark Strand
Once when the lawn was a golden green
and the marbled moonlit trees rose like fresh memorials
in the scented air, and the whole countryside pulsed
with the chirr and murmur of insects, I lay in the grass,
feeling the great distances open above me, and wondered
what I would become and where I would find myself,
and though I barely existed, I felt for an instant
that the vast star-clustered sky was mine, and I heard
my name as if for the first time, heard it the way
one hears the wind or the rain, but faint and far off
as though it belonged not to me but to the silence
from which it had come and to which it would go.

div style="text-align: justify;"On the pitch, Montero certainly brings to Seattle what Kobe Bryant

It's a big Tournament week with the Christian County Tournament hosted by Ozark and Nixa, the
Bulldogs are holding the Rolla Invitational and the New Covenant Warriors have a Tournament as
well. It looks like their might be a Frisco League Tournament as well. I'm still sorting out my
calendar and if you haven't shared your info with me yet (Rolla, NCA, Frisco) I'd appreciate

Well, my dark horse pick to win the tournament, Croatia, is out of Euro 2008. Turkey seems charmed
even if they're practically throwing the equipment guy on in the next match.
That leaves my sentimental pick, Spain, but I have absolutely no confidence in their intestinal
fortitude. Skill they have in spades, but I doubt any other top soccer country has as fragile a
psyche.

ESPN is pretending that they had nothing to do with the Jemele Hill piece which I commented on
earlier. Rather than displaying the text as was originally published and explaining the error, they
have just suspended her. She has sort of apologized for her comments (she regrets her lack of
judgment and writes that she is a good person while criticizing people who have accused her -
pointing out spelling mistakes and arguing that more racism doesn't help, which is fair).

Morning all. Today is an absolutely fantastic day. The Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship last
night for the first time in my lifetime. It was a real massacre of the Lakers, and it couldn't have
happened to a bigger set of cunts. So here's to the Celtics, and hoping for another one next year.

He's giving Phil Jackson advice. Wait, what? Avram the Gone has been a guest
of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers this week as the team attempts to revive its championship
series with the Boston Celtics. Grant & Phil chatted it up before the Lakers' 103-98 win in
Hollywood on Sunday.
"We talked about the situation that happened with Chelsea in the Manchester game, the
disappointment John Terry had," Jackson said.

All I can say is what a day. Sunday might go down as one of the best days of sports in a very long
time from Tigers dramatic putt on the 18th to force a playoff at the US Open, to the Lakers holding
on to beat the Celtics in the NBA Finals to force a game six in Boston, to the Turks dramatic win
over the Czechs in Euro 2008 at the end of the day all I could say was Wow!
