Sport Italia by Simon Martin Published by I. B. Tauris August 2011, £22.50, ISBN: 9781845118204
If anyone had any doubt about sport's ability to warp society, Simon Martin's sumptuous Sport
Italia will leave them without arguments. A nation, remember, only since 1861; Italy has survived
its first one and a half centuries by following the path described in Benedict Anderson's
influential book, Imagined Communities – and sport has played an integral part in that.

On-loan AC Milan midfielder Alberto Aquilani believes that it is highly unlikely that he will
return to parent club Liverpool, given the simplicity involved in his release clause.
Italian champions Milan secured a loan deal for Aquilani this summer after Juventus, who had
loaned him from the Reds last season, could not reach an agreement regarding the permanent signing
of the player.
AC Milan midfielder Alberto Aquilani has revealed that the Serie A champions will be obligated to
sign him on a permanent basis from Liverpool for £5.2 million if he features in 25 matches this
term.
The 27-year-old is currently on a season-long loan deal with the Rossoneri after it became apparent
that first team opportunities at Anfield were not forthcoming.
In the last year he was one of the best player for Juventus, but the advent of Antonio Conte's
era at Juventus seems to have stopped the rising of Milos Krasic in the club.
When he arrived in Italy in the last year he was received by Juventus fans as the "New Nedved",
both for his role in the field (left wing) and for his moves which are very similar to those of
former Juventus and Lazio player.
Wesley Sneijder has revealed that former Inter boss Jose Mourinho told him to snub a move to Old
Trafford and continue to build his career at Inter Milan.

AC Milan is keen not to let Liverpool's Alberto Aquilani slip through their fingers, but they
appear unwilling to meet the €10 million (£8.7m) asking price set by the Anfield outfit.
On Friday Aquilani's agent Franco Zavaglia left the door to San Siro open after he said a move
there should not be excluded.
The question of the summer is where will Wesley Sneijder be once the transfer window
closes? The Dutch international has been in pretty sensational form for Inter Milan since
his move from Real Madrid two seasons ago, leaving many teams interested in his signature. One of
those teams is Manchester United, since their midfield maestro Paul Scholes has
just retired.
Former Manchester City striker Robinho has once again fired a parting shot at his old club and

Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani could soon find himself returning to Juventus amid reports of
coach Antonio Conte opting to implement a three-man midfield system, according to La Gazzetta dello
Sport.

€6 million, and the new arrival of Mirko Vucinic at Juventus has also given Antonio Conte food
for thought in regards to his tactical philosophy for the upcoming season.
AC Milan is closely monitoring the situation of Liverpool's Alberto Aquilani as they consider the

The 27-year-old is surplus to requirements at the English side and initially appeared to be on his
way to Fiorentina.
Fiorentina are still some way off finding an agreement over personal terms with Alberto Aquilani,
his agent Franco Zavaglia has said.
Despite impressing for Liverpool in pre-season, the player's representative confirmed talks over a
move back to Serie A for his client have been taking place.
Aquilani, 27, is seen by Fiorentina as an alternative to Riccardo Montolivo, who has been tipped to
leave the club this summer, possibly for AC Milan.
