When the goals rain in, they pour against the Philadelphia Union.
As if nothing could get worse after the problems the team has had tonight, the third goal that the Union gave up was mired in controversy.
Referee Mark Geiger, much maligned in American soccer circles for what has been criticized as inconsistent and incorrect game calling, pointed to the spot after a Carlos Valdes challenge on Will Bruin.
Marc Narducci, writing about the renewed confidence and optimism at the Union, says, "It may not
all be Hackworth, but Nowak brought a high level of tension to the organization. Everybody from the
players to management were always on their toes when Nowak was in the room.
What does Peter Nowak expect from Colorado? "As I said to these guys (post-game) in the locker
room in Portland, the Colorado team is going to be even more physical than this team. The game is
going to be fast, they're going to go up and down, they're capable of doing good things.

Peter Nowak says not to rush to judgement of the team after just one game. "I've said it before,
I think we have the right pieces to make a run, but we need to progress and I think that is going
to come with time.
The yearly changing of the guard for the Philadelphia Union's television color commentator has brought back a former player to take over the role from Bob Rigby.
Alejandro Moreno is the latest person to hold he title of Union color commentator, according to a press release on the team's official website.

Danny Califf says of Monday's game, "It's always really exciting every time the games come
around," said Califf, who will be 32 on March 17. "It's the first one, especially when things are
buzzing. Portland the place is going to be crazy. They're going to be flying.

Every season the Sports Business Journal provides an excellent in-depth look at the upcoming
Major League Soccer season. A link to the excellent grouping of stories is here. The lead story
is about the new relationship between NBC and MLS.

The upcoming 2012 MLS season will be the third in the history of the Philadelphia Union, and it
will also be the third straight year that the franchise will have a new color commentator. A source
with knowledge of the situation informed the Brotherly Game that the Union will promote sideline
reporter Bob Rigby to television color commentator.
Well, after careful consideration of all the available information, we all decided that Team GB
was in fact a brilliant idea, although not necessarily for footballing reasons. That our tolerance

One of the biggest off-season stories was the start of the NBC/MLS relationship. To date, the
broadcasts have been high quality, the announcers first rate and the ratings slightly better than
expected. Most impressive has been promotional efforts of the Peacock. The NBC Sports Network
has done an excellent job putting MLS in front of their NHL audience and during other
telecasts.
Dane Richards Sporting the New KitOne thing that failed to get a mention on NBC Sports'
broadcast of the Red Bulls 2-1 defeat in Dallas yesterday was the fact that RBNY debuted a new blue
away kit. Based on the same template as the new 2012 home shirt, the away jersey features a lighter
shade of blue than last year's sharp-looking dark navy kit with red trim, and is reminiscent of the
2008 and 2009 away strip.
As much as I was looking forward to the Houston Dynamo season getting underway, I was nearly as
excited about the debut of MLS on the NBC Sports Channel. The league signed a new television deal
with NBC Sports this off-season, leaving behind the chronic underachievers as FOX Soccer who
treated MLS like a third-class citizen at best.
Editor's note: The following piece was originally published in November of 2010. In light of
the allegation about Peter Nowak and the Philadelphia Union perhaps risking the health of players,
TSG republishes it here today.
This is a guest post by Fox Soccer host and former USMNT player Kyle
Martino
After finally winning a game again, the Philadelphia Union (9-7-12) will travel to Kansas City

CARSON, Calif. --Pat Noonan scored in stoppage time to help the Los Angeles Galaxy steal a late
point from FC Dallas in a 1-1 draw at Home Depot Center on Saturday night.Â
Shea converted a penalty kick in the 61st minute after Galaxy back-up goalkeeper Bill Guadette
brought down forward Blas Perez in the box a the Panamanian drove towards goal after a defensive
miscue by the Galaxy's David Junior Lopes.
Former LA Galaxy and USMNT midfielder Kyle Martino may have had the purest of intentions when he
posted this on Twitter, but we aren't going to apologise for jumping in, nicking his idea and
exploiting it for all it's worth.
For those who can't be bothered to click the link, Kyle tweeted the following challenge last
night:
"One player from each position (GK, Defender, Midfielder, Forward) under the tree this year, who
is it?
While in the midst of my solo celebration for the Dynamo's Leg 2 tie and over all win of the Eastern Conference title I happened to catch some of the post game interviews and the first one that caught my attention was Kyle Martino talking to Brad Davis. The first thing that Kyle said to him wasn't "Congratulations", "Nice job" or "Way to go".
In three games during the regular season, DC United and New York scored a combined 14 goals, but it was a 1-0 scoreline that pushed DC into the Eastern Conference finals (to face Houston Sunday on NBCSN, 4:00 PM ET). After drawing 1-1 in the first leg, one of the biggest rivalries in MLS was essentially reset to square one for the second leg.
Been a while since I've penned a business blog of a live broadcast, so I thought I would provide some thoughts on the NBC Sports Network telecast from Red Bull Arena with some added thoughts on the Kansas City/Houston match. Obviously, it didn't work out as planned!
The snow filled game opened with a the great NBC playoff intro and included some great shots of the snow bombarding the field .
Mastroeni is experiencing post-concussion -like symptoms and has been held out of practice the
last two days.
Obviously this is not a good sign. Kyle Martino reported during Sunday's game that Pablo felt he
was one bad concussion away from retirement, and now he's having post-concussion symptoms 10 days
after suffering a head knock against Columbus.
At 3:00 Eastern on Sunday, NBC kicked off its three years of MLS coverage on Sunday with a live
broadcast from Frisco, Texas. As we often do for big soccer telecasts, we prepared a business
blog of the event. Generally, the reviews of NBC's fist broadcat were extremely positive. Both
the booth and studio teams drew high reviews and production values were first rate.

With Clarence...sorry, Clay Goodson appearing on House Hunters International late last year and
Kyle Martino doing a stint this past Sunday on Cupcake Wars, soccer would seem to be having its
moment in the sun.
Alright... I'm not saying Kyle Martino doesn't deserve a charmed life, but c'mon!Dude played pro
and international soccer, married Eva Amurri and had killed national broadcasts like a pro by the
time he'll turn 31 next month. Fine. Great. I'm happy for the guy.But now, NOW, he's gotten to be a
judge on Cupcake Wars.
