The 30 (24+4+2) matches of Euro 2012 over the past 23 days have led to the finale, later today
in the Ukrainian capital's Olympic Stadium:
Euro 2012 Final : 1 July 2012 More » Spain 20.45 Italy Referee: Pedro Proença (POR) – Stadium:
Olympic Stadium, Kyiv (UKR)
We'll be gathering to watch at CultFootball HQ West, which should make for a good viewing
atmosphere not least because of one us is partial to Spain (arising from a longtime affinity for
Dutch total football, through to Barcelona starting in the '90s and to the technical brilliance to
today's tiki-taka), while the other has a rooting roots for Gli Azzurri (Italian
ancestors plus childhood Saturdays spent watching the Serie A match of the week on the broadcast
Italian channel, not to mention years spent as a defender).
Daniele De Rossi, a frequent target of top Barclays Premier League clubs, has revealed his own
inspirational connection to English football by referring to Steven Gerrard as his idol.
Roma midfielder De Rossi is preparting actively for Sunday's quarterfinal battle against the
Three Lions and despite acknowledging his frustrations at struggling against English oppositions,
he looks up to the England skipper.
We've nearly reached the end of the Group Stage. Two matches to go in Group D today:
Sweden-France and England-Ukraine, which will determine the final two quarterfinalists. Already in
the final eight: Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.
The latter two claimed first and second in Group C with tense victories yesterday.
England 1 France 1 Les Bleus had 60% of the ball and put 15 shots on target. England fired only one
on frame, but it was enough to keep France winless in their last eight major tourney matches. NSC
Man of the Match: Joleon Lescott (England) Ukraine 2 Sweden 1 It was a Hollywood night in Kyiv,
with "Return of the Shevi" playing to an adoring audience.
Poland and Ukraine: the unlikely duo. This is the second of a two part
series by John Ray on the history of Euro 2012's respective hosts, allowing fans to become
familiar with the two nations that will soon be placed under a microscope.
Roy Hodgson's England team landed at their training base in Krakow, Poland
yesterday (which is assuming its role as the Euro 2012 hotspot so far)
and immediately checked into the Stary Hotel. England's group stage fixtures will
take place in the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Donetsk, so the
squad is expected to board a 1.

WARSAW, Poland — The mascots for the Euro 2012 football championships to be co-hosted by Poland
and Ukraine were officially unveiled at a Warsaw ceremony attended by senior UEFA officials and the
two national football federations. Like Euro-2008 co-hosted by Austria and Switzerland which had
their twins Trix and Flix, the 2012 mascot also features [.
Does this not look like the pattern of a shirt you'd get for a 4 year-old girl found on a
rickety rack standing dangerously close to the produce section of a supermarket?
Or maybe some strange nick nack found on your grandmother's dresser which your whole family
makes fun of, only to see it on Antiques Roadshow and find it's worth a small country.
Sing along now: "There's only one Arsenal."
Or not.
Fans of the Gunners familiar with only the Premier League, or the top four leagues in England,
might know a few teams from other countries. Mostly, this has been due to the Champions League
being televised so widely. Crazed football fans may watch more games, including from the top
European leagues in Spain, Italy, Germany and France but, for the most part, naming three teams in
Denmark might prove to be a challenge.
The bizarre alternate scenario of Germany stepping-in and co-hosting Euro 2012 with Poland can
finally be laid to rest. UEFA's Executive Committee has been meeting this week (more below on their
other deliberations), and came to the following conclusion on Ukraine's readiness to host the
tournament:
After careful consideration of the documents and guarantees submitted to UEFA by the Ukrainian
Government and the cities of Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv and Lviv during the last couple of months, the
infrastructure report prepared by the UEFA administration and after consultation with the host
associations, the UEFA Executive Committee took the following decisions concerning the selection of
host cities for UEFA EURO 2012™:
• to confirm Kyiv as the venue of the final match of UEFA EURO 2012™
• to confirm Donetsk and Lviv, and to appoint Kharkiv as host cities for group matches of UEFA
EURO 2012™
UEFA did not give Ukraine an entirely clean bill of health; mitigating their criticism by noting
the poor economic climate, they still emphasised Ukraine had "work to do" and that "UEFA will
continue to closely monitor the state of infrastructure and operational preparations.
Yesterday the news broke that Thierry Henry has left Barcelona to head for USA, having signed
for New York Red Bulls. What a plonker, why would a player like him go off to a country where
'soccer' is way down the pecking order of sports??
He's only 32 years old and still has two or three seasons left at the top, shame he didn't give
Arsene a call and ask to come back home.

A beauty of a goal. Iniesta's superb strike broke Chelsea's heart in the 93rd minute and became
the talk of the world but this was a Messi like gem that came late and snuffed out Kyiv's hopes.

At the moment, the country of Portugal is a Fat Bastard-style floater in the financial world's
cesspool. An optimist would expect at any second, that some alleged French rapist from IMF would
come in with $100B US to save the day, but that's doubtful. A few years ago, an all-Portuguese
major European cup final would be equally as unlikely.
