At the 2010 Nike International Friendlies, the U.S. Under-17 MNT took on Korea Republic, Brazil and
Turkey in Phoenix, Ariz. With the 2011 edition set to kick off this afternoon, ussoccer.com looks
back on last year's tournament.

the final of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup between Brazil and Portugal in Bogota, Colombia.
The match will be broadcast live on ESPNU and ESPN3.com on Saturday, August 20, at 7 p.m. ET.
The American referees, along with Canada's Joe Fletcher, have also been on the referee crew for a
Group E match between Brazil and Austria, a Group B match featuring Uruguay and Cameroon and a
Round of 16 game between Spain and Korea Republic.

U.S. Soccer referee Mark Geiger and and assistant referee Sean Hurd are currently representing the
U.S. at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia.
Geiger served as the fourth official for the first two Group A games - Korea Republic vs. Mali and
host Colombia vs. France.
Geiger and Hurd were assigned to the match between Brazil and Austria, working alongside Canadian
assistant referee Joe Fletcher and England's Mark Clattenburg, who served as the fourth official.
Sangmu Phoenix, the South Korean military football club playing in the country's professional
K-League, could be expelled or relegated to a proposed new second division because of the ongoing
match-fixing scandal plaguing the the Korea Football Association. The team's coach was arrested

Scarred by its worst match-fixing scandal in its 28-year history, South Korea's 16-team,
professional K-League will split into two divisions and move to a relegation and promotion system
from 2013. Under the new system, the K-League will punish any club that has players found guilty of
match rigging by deducting points earned from league games, by depriving clubs the right to compete
in the AFC
South Korean prosecutors have arrested almost 50 more players in connection the match-fixing

Changwon District Prosecutors' Office has announced that 46 players, including nine from South

The South Korean government appears to be running out of patience with the growing football
match-fixing controvery and is threatening to shut down the country's professional competition, the
K-League. Last week K-League administrators pro-actively banned 10 players for life for fixing
matches, prior to the courts dealing with them on criminal charges.

A former South Korea goal-keeper has now admitted involvement in K-League match-fixing. According
to Ahn Gi-Heaon, the league's Secretary General, the player, now with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors,
admitted he engaged in match-fixing schemes last season when he was playing for Chunnam Dragons.

South Korean prosecutors have now charged 10 K-League players for allegedly fixing results in the
country's top football league. According to BBC News, eight of the players play for the Daejeon
Citizen club which lost a match to the Pohang Steelers on 6 April by a score of 0-3. Brokers and
players from other teams have also been charged.
South Korean sports suspected of having been penetrated by match fixers will no longer receive
proceeds from Sports Toto, the country's sole legal sports betting agency, and bookies will face
tougher punishment for illegal activities. According to The Dong-A Ilbo, the Sports Ministry has
announced stricter measures against match fixing including revising the National Sports Promotion
Act to

involved in match fixing have until 13 June to voluntarily confess their involvement to the league.
