The big game here at HTIOT is this afternoon's friendly between the United States Men's National
Team and Belgium. Kick-off is at 1:30 PM CST. Both ESPN and ESPN3.com are advertised to be carrying
the game. In addition to the USMNT, there is a whole slate of 2014 World Cup Qualifiers and 2012
Euro Qualifiers taking place today.
The next edition of an important English dictionary looks set, at this rate, to use an action
shot of this year's Under-20s World Cup to illustrate its definition of ‘curate's egg.' The
tournament has had its moments so far, and has got noticeably better as I've been typing. But for
every Colombia/France, there's been one.
Just a little over a year after Spain won the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the draws for
the qualifying rounds of the next FIFA World Cup have been made. Host nation Brazil invited stars
past and present such as Ronaldo, Cafu and Neymar to conduct the draw along with FIFA General
Secretary Jerome Valcke in Rio de Janeiro.

Nothing confirms more that the English Premier League was founded on a lie than native attitudes
to the Under-20s World Cup, which started in Colombia last night. England actually opened the
tournament against Korea DPR, which seemed like a surprise move until the ghastly goalless draw
revealed FIFA's plan to start with a 90-minute tedium masterclass to make the rest of the games
look good.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup Colombia 2011 kicks of today with four matches on the calendar. With 2009
champions Ghana failing to qualify for the tournament, 2009 runners-up Brazil kicks off action
against Egypt at 9:45 PM ET tonight. The competition starts later this afternoon when England meets
Korea DPR.

The summer of international soccer continues this weekend, as Copa America joins the FIFA U-17
World Cup and FIFA Women's World Cup among the on-going international tournaments.
Host Argentina and defending champion Brazil open their Copa America campaigns on Friday and
Sunday against Bolivia and Venezuela, respectively.
There are some good games this weekend, including the US WNT on Saturday morning. As noted in
the Goal column today "In Germany right now, the women's soccer players are the
headliners"
The best source for commentary I've found on the Women's World Cup is From the Left Wing. If you
have a daughter, you owe it to yourself to read Jennifer's work.
British Eurosport's ubiquitous football commentator Tim Caple was doing his level best not to
say there were "no easy games in international football these days." Some clichés are oft-repeated
because of the element of truth therein, but there were certainly no "easy games" in the first
round of matches at this year's Women's World Cup in Germany.
Liverpool youngsters Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom have been named in the England squad for the
forthcoming U20 World Cup finals in Colombia.
The Reds pair are part of coach Brian Eastick's 21-man squad, which will warm up for the finals
with a 10-day training camp in Denver, Colorado in America from July 14.
The USA Futbolitas handled business today in their opening match against Korea DPR with a 2-0
victory in Dresden, Germany. In the first half both teams took some time to find their rhythm. It
wasn't until the 2nd half Lauren Cheney notched a point for the Americans with a well executed
header off of an excellent cross from Captain Abby Wambach in the 54″.
Pia Sundhage seems inclined to utilize players from the Boston Breakers. And today, as the U.S
picked up a 2-0 victory over Korea DPR to start their World Cup campaign in Dresden, Sundhage's
decision to start Boston Breakers players Lauren Cheney and Rachel Buehler paid off.
The Boston Breaker's Lauen Cheney scored the game-winning goal for the U.
The USWNT opened play in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup with a 2-0 win over Korea DPR. The
first half ended scoreless. Both teams played well, with good play from the wings and a few chances
for each side. US goalkeeper Hope Solo made some keys saves to keep a clean sheet through the first
half.

If you haven't seen Monica Ocampo's goal for Mexico in last night's Women's World Cup match yet,
you're in for a treat!! Has a touch of Zizou and reminds you a little of
Ronaldinho in his prime. Their match against England ended in a 1-1 draw, of
course, but there's still a lot left to play for.

Now that the US men's national team's hopes for winning the 2011 Gold Cup are dashed, our

tournament on Tuesday against Korea DPR (11:45am ET, ESPN).
Meanwhile today is the first day of competition in the 2011 Women's World Cup.
This will be the sixth Women's World Cup that FIFA has staged since the inaugural tournament

As the Wall Street Journal notes, it's likely the German's to lose.
The USA's 90-minute training session today was held under intermittent sunshine and clouds, but the
squad is looking sharp and extremely anxious to get this tournament underway. The competition
starts tomorrow with two games in Group A and then the tournament will be off and running with
matches on eight straight days.
Tonight's games in Moreliia and Monterrey saw Asian champions Korea DPR and European Champion
Netherlands both exit the tournament with 2 and 1 point, respectively.
Both were drawn into a very difficult Group A along with host Mexico - who swept all three of its
games to emerge with nine points from three straight wins.

Between the FIFA U-17 World Cup, the European U-21 championships and the FIFA Women's World Cup
there's plenty of international soccer to satisfy the soccer fan's craving, but one matchup this
weekend that's not in any of those competitions will have everybody's attention, at least in North
America.

The United States women's national team kicks off its World Cup campaign on Tuesday in hopes of
securing its first World Cup championship since 1999.
The U.S. women have never finished worse than third in any of the five Women's World Cups, but
after the standard that was set by the teams of the past, it figures to be win or bust yet again
for coach Pia Sundhage and her squad.
With the next World Cup still three years away and the US Men's National team putting us to
sleep in the Gold Cup, wouldn't it be nice if there was something exciting going on this
summer?
What's that you say, Amy Rodriguez? Something exciting in Germany? But what?
The Women's World Cup kicks off this Sunday and runs until the big final on July 17.
After everyone concluded their first game of the U-17 World Cup, here is how the six different
confederations are doing ... CONCACAF, with five teams, is the only confederation with a winning
record so far.

Today's activity for the U.S. WNT featured just a closed door training match against Norway, a game
the USA lost 3-1, with Carli Lloyd scoring the USA's lone goal on a beautiful strike from distance
in the 60th minute. The USA controlled most of that first 60 minutes, but Norway was the aggressor
for the last third, scoring in the 64th, 67th and 82nd minutes.

While one U.S. national team is fighting for a Gold Cup title, another one starts its quest for
a World Cup crown.
The U.S. Under-17 men's national team begins its FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico as it takes on
the Czech Republic on Sunday.
The U.S. Women's World Cup Team has arrived in Europe, but despite flying from Washington, D.C., to
Munich, did not spend much time in Germany, host country for this sixth Women's World Cup. Instead,
the U.S. team boarded a bus for a two hour drive southeast to the sight of its pre-tournament
training camp about an hour from Salzburg, a wonderfully scenic setting set at the base or towering
mountains with sweeping green forests.

The U.S. women's national team continued its preparations for the World Cup with a match against
Japan on Wednesday, and once again the Americans pulled out a 2-0 victory.
Four days after defeating Japan by the same scoreline, the United States was victorious through
goals from Heather O'Reilly and Amy Rodriguez.

The four berths to the FIFA U-17 World Cup from South America have been decided - Brazil, Uruguay,
Argentina and Ecuador will travel north to Mexico this summer.
The six-team round robin tournament was held in Ecuador and the four teams were decided with one
round of games still to be played.
Group C and D winners Costa Rica and Mexico both cruised to quarterfinal victories on Tuesday night
to earn a place in the CONCACAF U-20 semifinals and a ticket to the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in
Mexico.
Two more teams will join that pair tonight with the final two quarterfinal matches set - Honduras
vs.
So, now that the U.S. U-17 MNT has had a couple of days to let it all sink in, let's check out the
growing field of qualifiers for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
The four teams that qualified from CONCACAF (not including host Mexico) are the most recent to book
their tickets and there are two confederations still to hold their final round of qualifying.
New Zealand became the most recent team to qualify for the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup, by virtue of a
2-0 win against Tahiti to claim the Oceania title.
Though the Oceania region has only one berth to Mexico, 10 teams competed in the regional
championship for the first time - two years ago only four teams competed in the final round.
