While Major League Soccer teams head into the final weeks of preseason and players in the North
American Soccer League and USL PRO teams are finalizing their 2012 plans, Aaron Hohlbein
(Middleton/UW) is in Madison working to get healthy and hoping for a shot with one of those teams
later this season.
The Portland Timbers completed their last scheduled practice in Portland before heading to
California on February 5 for 12 days of training and four scrimmages. While the mood was soured a
bit by the news of Jose Adolfo Valencia's knee surgery, the team remains upbeat about their
prospects for the 2012 season.
After an offseason full of major moves, promise and tangible signs of improvement, the Portland
Timbers were hit with a sizeable dose of bad news Friday.
Colombian striker Jose Adolfo Valencia, signed as a Young Designated Player back in December,
requires knee surgery to repair damaged cartilage in his left knee and is going to be out for
anywhere from the next 6-to-12 months.
The silence has finally been broken and we finally know what all the secrecy was about. Jose
Adolfo Valencia will be having knee surgery to repair damage cartilage in his left knee. The
biggest reason this took so long to take care of was the fact that Santa Fe and Portland reworked
the loan deal that brought Valencia to Portland as it is still unclear when and where the injury
occurred.
Forward Calen Carr, who played a key role in the run to the MLS Cup final, has been limited this
week while rehabbing from the left knee surgery he underwent late last month. "I had to get a
little work done on my knee," he said. "It was nothing major. Just cleaned up some things." [...]
Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey feels sorry for his team-mates who have suffered injury or
suspension, but he is ready to step up as a replacement.
The £1.7million signing from Charlton in May 2010 was at the beginning of December recalled from a
loan at Blackpool by boss Kenny Dalglish after Lucas Leiva's season was ended by knee surgery.
Liverpool v QPR – Suarez, Barton or Mason to star?
QUEENS PARK RANGERS are the guests at Anfield today and will feel they have a chance of taking
points off Liverpool on their home patch. They'll be well aware that The Reds' record against
newly-promoted sides hasn't been the best in recent times and will also have noted how many sides
have at least left Anfield with a point this season.
Liverpool confirm Lucas successfully undergoes knee surgery in Brazil
The Reds midfielder was in good form before his injury and despite his lengthy lay-off, is
determined to get back to training as soon as possible

Well, here we go.
Brian Ching has been selected in the expansion draft by the Montreal Impact. In order for Ching
to finish his career in Houston, something he's stated he wants to do, the club will have to work a
deal with the Impact to reacquire him. Will they do it, who knows.
There's the sentimental part of me that says give Montreal allocation money or a DP slot, hell
even a player, to get Ching back for one more season.
Sporting KC started a busy day today by announcing a trade with Chivas USA. Kansas City sent
midfielder Ryan Smith to Chivas USA for 2 supplemental draft picks in the upcoming draft. Both
sides can see this as a win for them. From Kansas City's perspective, they get something for
nothing. Smith's time in Kansas City was over.
Let the offseason wheeling and dealing begin.
The day after the Galaxy won the 2011 MLS Cup, cross-hall rivals Chivas USA began reinforcing
their squad for the 2012 season sending first and third round 2012 Supplemental Draft picks to
Sporting Kansas City for 25-year-old English midfielder Ryan Smith.
A video of Seba Le Toux talking about endurance (careful, it auto-plays!). This is perfect.
Nobody on Earth can possibly be more qualified to discuss this topic. Oh wait, he just says he
works hard? What!? This is like getting superman to talk about his powers and walking away with a
quote like, "I just do it, y'know?
Villarreal will be without Cristian Zapata, Cani, Marco Ruben and Marcos Senna for their Group A
meeting with Manchester City, while Javier Camuñas is doubtful.
These injuries are in addition to Giuseppe Rossi, who is out for six months, after knee surgery
earlier this week.
The most serious of the other injuries appears to be to Zapata, who strained a ligament in his
right knee during Saturday's 2-0 Liga win against Rayo Vallecano, an injury which is likely to
sideline him for five weeks.
In "the other wild card" game, two offensive lineman type soccer clubs come together, again.

First, some odds:
• 25 to 1: Will Hesmer scores or gets an assist
• 30 to 1: Marvell Wynne, own goal.
Chris Cooley could never get out of the gates this season for the Washington Redskins. The star
tight end seemed injured from Day 1. Now it's official: Chris Cooley is out for the rest of the
2011 NFL season.
Chris Cooley had knee surgery in the offseason but due to the NFL lockout, he didn't have
medical help when recovering.
Why 'new Becks' Bentley is battling to save his career
I really fear for my mate David Bentley after hearing about the knee surgery which has ruled him
out for another six months. It seems like only yesterday that he was being hailed as the new David
Beckham after scoring a sensational hat-trick for Blackburn as we beat Manchester United 4-3 at
Ewood.

HARRISON, N.J. -- The U.S. men's national team might have lost to Ecuador on Tuesday night, but
there was one overwhelming bright spot for Jurgen Klinsmann and Co.
Manchester City chief executive officer Garry Cook has paid the ultimate price for an
ill-mannered email mishap.
Cook resigned on Friday after being found culpable of sending an offensive email to defender
Nedum Onuoha's mother that mocked her battle with cancer. Cook reportedly meant to send the
response to City's director of football, Brian Marwood, but instead mistakenly sent it Dr.
It looks increasingly likely that Ledley King will be available for Spurs this weekend after his
latest comeback from injury.
Club captain Ledley underwent knee surgery in July and has been slowly working his way back to
fitness ever since. It was expected that he would feature in last night's game against Kettering
but instead he featured in a training ground friendly a day earlier and it appears that he came
through unscathed.
Jonathan Bornstein came back earlier than expected after PRP therapy
Jonathan Bornstein was one of the first soccer players in the USA to undergo Platelet Rich
Plasma therapy, now known commonly as PRP. Blood was drawn from the Chivas player and then
centrifuged leaving mostly platelets.
William Conwell (who contributed to this report) and I attended our first Portland Timbers
training session this morning, and even in this quiet week there's still some interesting news
afoot.
Exhibit A: the presence of Alex Nimo, the former Benson HS star who played for the USL Timbers
while on loan from Real Salt Lake from 2009-2010.
WPS
Unwelcome news for WPS: The CEO is stepping down after less than a year on the job.
Paul Riley spoke about the future of WPS in a conference call yesterday. Any time Paul Riley
speaks, everyone should listen. Two people should be allowed to call a joint session of congress:
The President of the United States of America and Paul Riley, President of AwesomeQuotes.

The amazing offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles continues. If signing at least five stars
wasn't enough, the Eagles signed Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith. The former member of the New
York Giants is currently recovering from a knee injury but this is still a great signing for the
Eagles.
In 2009, Steve Smith had 107 catches for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns.

Stuart Holden took the next step in his recovery process on Monday, returning to the practice
field for Bolton Wanderers for the first time since March.
Having been unable to train for the past five months due to a knee injury, Holden returned to
training on the day of his 26th birthday.
Just in case anyone has missed it, Danny Cruz is out 4-6 weeks with a partially torn quad
muscle, an injury he sustained in training last week, and Will Bruin will not be Dancing anytime
soon, as he is now scheduled to have knee surgery, according to the Chronicle.

U.S. national team goalkeeper David Yelldell has reason to celebrate.
Yelldell has been named the starting goalkeeper for Bayer Leverkusen in the absence of incumbent
Rene Adler, who is recovering from offseason knee surgery. Yelldell beat out Fabian Giefer and will
start Leverkusen's season opener against Mainz on August 7.
Steve Stoehr, of SB Nation's New England Revolution blog The Bent
Musket, and I exchanged five questions a piece ahead of today's Philadelphia Union-Revolution match
at Gillette Stadium.
tBG: The Union chose to pass on the opportunity to acquire USMNT
attacking midfield Benny Feilhaber.
Tottenham midfielder Sandro is expected to be out of action for three months after undergoing
knee surgery on Friday.
Luckily, the team we're going to be facing in this video is not the one with Red in the name,
but rather the one in red jerseys.
Among the things I'm seeing here that I hope Dynamo exploit on Saturday night:
1. Woeful defending. I think the next time TFC play together as a unit will be the first
time.
A good night for the New England Revolution offense these days entails simply avoiding being
shutout. The Revs have gone well over two months since scoring multiple goals in a game and have
been held scoreless five times during that 10 game stretch.
The Revs need Benny Feilhaber to lead the attack on Monday.
The New England Revolution announced via press release yesterday that they had declined options
on Serbian duo Marko Perovic and Ilija Stolica. Stolica had spent the last few months on loan at
USL-Pro club FC New York while Perovic underwent season-ending knee surgery after injuring himself
against Sporting KC in April.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – Serbians Marko Perovic and Ilija Stolica are no longer members of the New
England Revolution after their contract options were declined today. Perovic and Stolica both
signed with the club last season.
Marko Perovic was one of the few bright spots for the Revs in 2010.
The announcement came Tuesday that Sporting KC midfielder Ryan Smith has left the team due to
family reasons.
It has been a rough year for the 24-year-old English midfielder. He appeared in only six MLS
games this year after offseason knee surgery kept him out early and a groin strain has kept him on
the sidelines recently.

Having lost five straight games in all competitions while watching its MLS record fall to
3-7-4, the New England Revolution, it's safe to say, has fallen on hard times.
The Revolution has scored just three goals in its last eight games while allowing 14.
