Being wary of repeating oneself, I still have to think about how this team in Rave Green plays.
When are they at their best, and when do they struggle? The defining moments of this season likely
indicate what the needs are, and the previous four matches now against Houston can show us a few
trends in how Kinnear and Schmid see the opposition.

Houston and Seattle played a classic match last night on national television. The unsporting
Freddy Montero was unable to hand the physical pounding Dom Kinnear and the Houston defenders had
in store for the much hyped, but little regarded (at least in Colombia) forward. Montero's
solution: whine and go to ground easily.

The Seattle Sounders will make their MLS playoff debut tonight against the two-time MLS Cup
champion Houston Dynamo in the opening match of their Western Conference playoff series (10pm,
ESPN2).
The Sounders are new to the playoffs as a club, but have plenty of experience across the board,
from two-time MLS Cup-winning coach Sigi Schmid, to European soccer veterans Kasey Keller and
Freddie Ljungberg.

There aren't many players in MLS more versatile than Geoff Cameron, and this year, there were no
defenders who were better.
When Houston's defense reached a critical moment of transition, Dynamo head coach Dom Kinnear
turned to Cameron to help anchor the back-line early in the season and all Cameron did was respond
with dominant form few could have expected from the 2008 Rookie of the Year candidate.

Sure, Tom Soehn isn't technically gone yet. But we all know he's doomed. That's why it's time to
start speculating on his replacement. Here's my latest odds.
Richie Williams, current Red Bull interim coach – Now that virtually everyone I have
spoken to, both close and distant, say that Red Bull clearly wants a name head coach going into its
first season at Red Bull Park.

There's a red storm raging and it's threatening to overwhelm the Houston Dynamo, if it hasn't
already.
So yes I'll start. I am quite bummed about the guys losing to Metapan, who had neither won nor tied
a single game in group play before last night. So, not to be a downer here, but it's very possible
that the season, which we all hope lasts five more games, might just be over in three.

A year after every MLS team failed to reach the knockout round of the CONCACAF Champions League,
the defending MLS champion Columbus Crew has stepped up to make sure Major League Soccer will be
represented in the current Champions League Tournament.
The Crew tied the Puerto Rico Islanders, 1-1, on Tuesday night to lock up a quarterfinal

This week has me thinking about tipping points. No, not Malcolm Gladwell's book, but rather
coaches, teams and the playoff races.
You know, before watching the highlights from the Denver leg of the San Jose/Colorado home and home
Wednesday night, I wondered what could possibly go worse for the EQuakes this year.

I don't think so. Last night they became the first MLS team to beat Deportivo Saprissa on the road
in the CONCACAF Champions League. It was a gutsy match where the Crew left 5 regulars at home -
Chad Marshall (injury), Eric Brunner (discipline), Alejandro Moreno (rest), Frank Hejduk (rest?),
Gina Padula (illness) - and Schelotto was parked on the bench.

After all I've done for you?
Of course after last night's Night of the Living Fat Man in RFK (featuing the amazing
disappearing career of Josh Wicks) people are strewing palm fronds in the path of his badly
overloaded donkey and proclaiming Sigi the King of the Coaches, a title which Bruce Arena, among
others, may have something to say about before it's all said any done.

Dom Kinnear, and the Houston Dynamo have done it again. In an era when MLS struggles to keep
talented players in the league, and continues to sign over the hill, washed up foreign stars,
Houston stands above the rest.
In signing Luis Angel Landin, the Dynamo have brought to MLS precisely the type of player that
no other team has in several years.

Three teams are scheduled to represent MLS in the second version of the CONCACAF Champions
League. For D.C., Columbus, and Houston it's a chance to take on some of the region's best clubs,
and prove that MLS can go put its best foot forward in an international competition.

MLS continued poor play in CONCACAF continued this week. While DC United advanced, they added a
record where in ten preliminary round matches against teams largely from poorer leagues, MLS is win
less.
Those of us who watch football from around the globe do not rate MLS highly as a league.

Week 21 (08/05)
Last Week's Ranking in Parenthesis...
- Houston (1): A shootout victory (4-3)Â over United likely has Kinnear's boys
dreaming about the 2009 Shield.
- Chicago (2): A solid home win (again featuring great defense) has the Fire
looking strong without McBride.

Thirteen competitive games in fifty three days: That's what the USMNT faced in June and July. We
had no friendlies this summer or practice games but deadly serious qualifiers and tournaments. Here
is what we've learned:
Charlie Davies is the real deal.

Seriously, you're going to write an article and say that Kinnear is a better coach than me the day
after I beat him for the second time in two weeks? And I did that despite not caring the second
time?
I've already notified Joe Roth and Drew Carey, and let's say this matter is being handled.

Why, God, why? Why are we still in this tournament? We were two minutes away from getting out of
this nightmare, two minutes from not having to play in that crappy RFK stadium, and what does Nate
Jaqua do? He scores. And then we pull it out in extra time. Really, Next Season Sports says it
all:
It was the second USOC match in a row that Seattle scored its first goal of the match
in the last minute of regulation and it was the second time in the past two weeks the Sounders came
from behind to defeat Houston.

Houston Dynamo head coach Dom Kinnear probably didn't like the fact that Fredy Montero scored a
questionable goal against the Dynamo recently, but that didn't stop him from selecting the
Colombian striker to the MLS All-Star Team.
Montero and teammate Jhon Kennedy Hurtado were two of the six players chosen by Kinnear as
reserves for the MLS All-Star Game against Everton on July 29 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah.

The past few weeks have been rough for the Dynamo. No, not because they have been on the road
for over a month, but because this international duty crap is making it difficult to field a
consistent lineup. And of course it's the top players that are out. Brian Ching and Stuart Holden
are off making America look good and Andrew Hainault is.

He's the best manager this nation has ever produced. Not only is he the best, but the gap
between Bruce Arena and the second best American manager ever (Bob Bradley, Dom Kinnear, Mooch

has ever done and may never do again.

The MLS All-Star First XI was announced on Monday, and as expected, Seattle led the way withÂ
selections, only not as many might have thought.
Kasey Keller and Freddie Ljungberg were named to the MLS All-Star First XI in their first
seasons in the league. Voted on by fans, players and media, the MLS All-Star First XI is the group
of players who received the most votes, but isn't necessarily the group that will start against
Everton at the All-Star Game at Rio Tinto Stadium on July 29th.

Heading into tomorrow's Dynamo v. Sounders match in the Emerald Rain Forest, let's take a look at
this team and you tell me what you notice (aside from the fact that's it's a nine-person side with
six defenders)
Ching-Weaver
Holden-Cameron-Barrett
Hainault-Robinson-Boswell-Waibel
What I am seeing is, if you were to plug another midfielder there and a relatively stout keeper,
you'd have a side that could challenge just about any MLS team on any day.
