Daft name for a football team? I dunno, when we get to this part of the world, where we have MBA
speak fill the pages of newspapers and the words of TV hosts all the time, you would think people
would understand the meaning and importance of branding.
LionsXII? For a football team? Sounds as daft as TTM, PEA, SAFC, MyTeam, or Sime Darby.
Well, politically speaking it is a derby. Persiba travelled to Bontang and won 5-3 continuing their
recent goal scoring spree, 13 in three games. A derby geographically? Well, if you wanna call a 6
hour drive a local derby!
Persiba finished 3rd last season and hopes were high in the oil rich town that a serious shot at
the title was on the cards.
AFC Champions League Qualifier
Sriwijaya v Muang Thong United 2-2 (Keith Kayamba, Thierry Gathuessi; Datsakorn Thonglao, Teerasil
Dangda) 12,000 Sriwijaya win 7-6 on pens
Sriwijaya play some team from the Arab world in a final play off next week. I would love it if they
win and the arabs start whining about the match officials!
Reports suggest that Persiba Balikpapan are set to release Singaporean Khairul Amri and they would
be interested in replacing him with Malaysian striker Safee Sali who is also wanted by Persib.
Amri, widely considered the most talented Singaporean of recent years, has a long record of
injuries.
Having saw what he tweeted in the first place, I prompted Mr Neo Chee Seong (who contributed an
article last month) to come up with his list of players to fill up the vacuum after the disband of
the Singapore National Team.
Many thanks to Mr Neo for sharing his views on this issue.
Potential Players with Merits to be selected for Singapore National Squad.
