Who will Chivas protect this year? (Getty Images)
Yesterday we started our look at the expansion draft and who teams will and won't protect for
this month's upcoming draft. The Philadelphia Union get ten players to pick from and this year will
be as tough as any to predict who will stay and who will be left exposed.

Ghastly offense (as usual), generally excellent defense (as is customary) gave Chivas USA the
road point today.
Marcelo Saragosa excepted, of course, after throwing the most blatant kung fu kick at a soccer
game since Eric Cantona.

One more addition before the weekend slate of games. This time Chivas USA is the one doing the
adding.
Brazilian forward Maicon Santos, who has trained with the club since August 3 comes to the club
on loan from Brazilian club Bonsucesso. He will be eligible to play Saturday against Toronto.

He's 25-year-old Brazilian forward Maicon Santos, who has trained with the club since Aug.

Santos comes on loan from Brazilian club Bonsucesso and is eligible to play Saturday against

"Maicon is a strong forward who can give us a spark in the attacking third," said Chivas USA
Coach Preki, who desperately needs to bolster an anemic attack (last week he signed young striker
Jesus Padilla from CD Guadalajara).

Recall that we mentioned that this player had a very good training day with Chivas USA. (Click here
for my original post and update here). Well, it looks like it was good enough to get him a spot on
the team.
From the Chivas USA Front Office, the team announced today that it has acquired 25-year-old
Brazilian forward Maicon Santos on loan from Bonsucesso Futebol Clube of Brazil.

The Red Bulls are on a losing streak. Seriously. But Chivas USA, who started the season off
rather dominantly, with a squad of relative unknowns, has fallen back down to Earth. The Goats have
lost their last five games in a row, recording no goals in a franchise worst 320 minutes.
Meanwhile, the Red Bulls scoring woes will only continue, with Juan Pablo Angel and
Macoumba Kandji out for this game.

Finally, Toronto FC have found a way to eliminate a Puerto Rico Islander -terminate his contract.
TFC announced the release of defender Marco Velez after 38 appearances for the club. The enigmatic
29 year old was capable of the odd solid game but all too often was caught on the wrong end of a
defensive blunder.

Just days after talks with us had broken down, defender Chris Pozniak signed with cross-country
rivals Vancouver Whitecaps.
After Kevin Harmse was traded to Chivas, Pozniak was spotted training with us and many, myself
included, hoped he would be set for a return to TFC. It wasn't to be however, as apparently we were
having "salary cap" issues.

Chivas USA made some player personnel moves Friday ahead of Saturday's derby against the Galaxy
in Carson.
To wit:
*Defender Bobby Burling was removed from the disabled list. Burling, 24, went on the DL after
undergoing sports hernia surgery March 5, less than two weeks before Chivas USA's season
opener.

Canadian players are on the move this week. First it was Lars Hirschfeld signing with FC Energie
Cottbus in Germany. Now it's David Edgar, Josh Simpson, Chris Pozniak and Kevin Harmse.
After much speculation as to where he would end up, David Edgar has finally left Newcastle and
signed a 4 year deal with EPL newcomers Burnley.

Toronto FC has traded midfielder Kevin Harmse to Chivas USA in exchange for allocation money, the
teams announced on Wednesday. The move was made at the player's request, according to a statement
from TFC director of soccer Mo Johnston.
"Kevin requested a move back to the U.S.," said Johnston.

Yes...Kevin Harmse.
In one of the most one-sided trades in the history of world sport, Toronto FC sent Kevin Harmse to
Chivas USA yesterday in exchange for some allocation money. I've heard that his wife/girlfriend was
American and wanted to go back - looks like Harmsey might be a little whipped.

Here's a trade that went rather unmentioned yesterday. Toronto FC traded defender Kevin Harmse
to Chivas USA in exchange for allocation money.
Toronto continues their summer clear out of their roster, making this the third forth player to
be released or traded away. Harmse has a MLS home still unlike Johann Smith, Rohan Ricketts and
Gregg Sutton who were released from their contracts earlier this month.

Apparently South African-born Canadian Kevin Harmse was homesick - for Southern California.
Chivas USA acquired the 24-year-old defensive midfielder from Toronto today for allocation
money.
"Kevin is a strong, technical player who can play in both midfield and defense," said
Chivas USA Coach Preki.

According to CanadaSoccer.com, we're only going to be missing two players during the Gold Cup. None
of Dwayne De Rosario, Adrian Serioux, or Nana Attakora are included in Stephen Hart's side, but
Kevin Harmse and Ali Gerba are.
Looks like it was club over country for DeRo and Serioux.

According to the CONCACAF website, we could be missing five players during the Gold Cup (assuming
Ali Gerba signs). Stephen Hart has named his 30-man preliminary squad ahead of the tournament, and
included are Dwayne De Rosario, Adrian Serioux, Nana Attakora, Kevin Harmse, and Ali Gerba. Here is
the full 30-man squad.

I've got two words for you in the aftermath of the Galaxy's second victory of the year, on the

And those words are: Edson Buddle.

goals displaying heads-up play and clinical finishing.

As Toronto FC see off USL Canadian rivals the Vancouver Whitecaps with a 1-0 win in their first

thought Nana and Kevin were fantastic in their first starts of the season.

Of all people...Kevin freakin' Harmse. After scoring just 2 minutes in, I was hoping we'd put a few
more goals in, but it wasn't to be. Nonetheless, a win is a win and three points are three points.
This year's Nutrilite Canadian Championship is a must-win in my eyes, so I'm content with a clean
sheet at home to open things up.

For the second straight game, Chris Cummins and Nick Dasovic ran the sidelines for us. The sudden
resignation of John Carver was the talk of the team before this one - I didn't even get around to a

The Houston Dynamo formally announced the signing of 22 year-old Canadian international defender

I'm back at my home laptop, more than two hours since the end of today's game, and I am still
chilled to the bone. Whether this is due to that delightful lakeside climate or the frozen style of
the team has yet to be determined. The personal mistake by the lake today was the lack of long
underwear on my non-Calvin Klein frame.

I believe I have come up with the perfect headline to match the picture at the top of this blog
(which I stole from Krazy Kanadian over at torfc.com). 10 points to me. In case you don't recognize
the three players, they are TFC's Marco Velez, along with FC Dallas' Jeff Cunningham (unfortunately
he used to play for TFC), and Adrian Serioux, who in this picture did not know that he would be
anchoring Toronto's defense in the teams' next meeting.

Facing a massive player shortage for their next game, Toronto FC head coach John Carver is lashing
out at league officials for their refusal to schedule games around FIFA international dates. In
all, nine TFC players have been called up for international duty this weekend, a testament to the
talent that the club boasts, but also a real problem heading into this weekend's home game against
Chivas USA.

Carver released a team update yesterday in what feels like a heads up for bad things to come on
Saturday. Thanks to that piss poor call by Jorge Gonzalez (I'm not going to drop that one any time
soon) Edu's out, leaving a hole in the mid-field. Dichio is still seriously concussed so we're
still lacking solid striking capability.

Time to get in a quick pregame post before tonight's 8:30 pm (ET) kickoff:
TFC is fresh off two draws, one respectable, one not so much. We all felt the frustration of the
tie in beautiful British Columbia, where we were hoping to exact a measure of revenge following our
first home defeat of the season against the Whitecaps on July 1st.

Trying to keep my positive side up - at least TFC have a chance to finish strong against Montreal
later this month. It is simple, win and they're in. In, of course, is to be the Canadian club
champs and play in the Concacaf Champions League. Yet judging by the performance in Vancouver, the
negatives could easily get to you.
