While the rest of the world is waiting for a couple World Cup qualifiers to finish up here we
move forward here with our expansion draft coverage. Earlier in the day we discussed the LA Galaxy,
now we take a gander at the New England Revolution.

Almost eleven months ago, during a sunny week in South Florida, you could tell the 2009 MLS
Draft Class had the potential to be special.
During the rough days of the MLS Combine, even as player struggled with fitness and playing with
their new teammates, there was a sense that this year's crop of talent had the potential to provide
MLS with a serious infusion of talent.

Sometimes less is more, and in the case of the 2009 edition of the New England Revolution less
nearly became a lot. If you would have told me that the Revs would have lacked both Steve Ralston
and Taylor Twellman for the majority of the season and still made the playoffs this year I would
have called you crazy.

The Major League Soccer 2009 Playoffs continued on Saturday, November 7, 2009 with the second
leg between the Chicago Fire and New England Revolution. The Revolution were up 2-1 after the first
leg but the Fire hosted the second leg on Saturday. The winner would go on to face Real Salt Lake
next weekend, who earlier beat the Columbus Crew 4-2 on aggregate.

One more weekend of action and we will be in the conference finals here. One club is already in
and three others will move on this weekend. After last weekend's play the pressure is on a couple
home teams to rebound while one just has to keep on doing what they do best in front of their
fans.

The MLS playoffs have been engrossing and so far the upstarts have given the finger to the
favourites.
This time it was the Revs taking it to the Fire who had all their big named players while the
Revs have been without Twellman and Ralston. But the Revs African contingent stepped up admirably
as Sainey Nyassi, Emmanuel Osei, and Kenny Mensally had a huge game.

If I said not much had changed in the Major League Soccer table in the last seven days, I'd be
doing Week 20 a terrible disservice. The action was thrilling, surprising and eventful, shaking
things up even if the shock didn't quite register in the standings.
The week got underway in nauseatingly corporate fashion on Wednesday at Rio Tinto, where the
MLS All-Star game 2009 saw Premier League side Everton go up against the league's
hottest talents.

Major League Soccer will feature ten teams in league action and one team in a pretty
high-profile friendly tonight.
The Los Angeles Galaxy is taking on FC Barcelona in the Rose Bowl tonight in a game expected to
draw more than 85,000 fans. While the five MLS matches tonight aren't a lock to combine for that
much in attendance, there are still some great match-ups.

In soccer terms, being on the wrong side of thirty is an indicator that a player is in decline
and can't quite have the effect on the game that they used to.

If you followed SBI's pre-draft coverage as well as the 2009 MLS Draft, you knew that this
year's rookie class had the chance to be a special one.

I guess it's to be expected as the league gets bigger and bigger, but this year's rookie class is
on pace to equal or break a record. What is it? The most rookies who started at least half of the
regular season games. The record is 10, and already 9 rookies this season are virtually certain to
hit that mark (15 starts):
- Darrius Barnes (NE)
- Matt Besler (KC)
- Sam Cronin (TOR)
- Stefan Frei (TOR)
- Omar Gonzalez (LA)
- Jeremy Hall (LA)
- Chris Pontius (DC)
- Rodney Wallace (DC)
- Steve Zakuani (SEA)
Breaking the record is going to be hard, as some less hyped players will have to lock down a
starting role.

The New England Revolution's 4-2 win over Santos Laguna in the SuperLiga Group B opener was a
result of many factors. With conditions being difficult in the game due to heavy rain on a
synthetic turf pitch Revolution head coach Steve Nicol was more that happy with his teams passion
and spirit. "We've got plenty of heart and passion for the game, I think you saw that tonight.

Yesterday on the Major League Soccer Talk Podcast, one of our guests Jamie TYrecker of FOX
Sports articulated an opinion which I happen to believe is well founded regarding the lack of
player development by the USSF despite having a well funded and staffed National Academy in
Bradenton, Florida.

Despite scoring in the third minute, putting eight shots on goal and taking 10 corner kicks, the
Colorado Rapids were held to a tie by the injury-riddled New England Revolution on Saturday at
Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
Steve Ralston's penalty kick 18 minutes into the game was enough for the Revs to salvage a
tie.
