The news that Mike Ashley is seeking to sell off the naming rights to St. James' Park is up there
with Ken Bates' electric fence at Chelsea, Colin Moynihan's supporters' ID cards and Newcastle's
own recruitment of Dennis Wise as one of the crassest notions in football history. Until now, I
think most outside the Gallowgate have looked on with some bemusement at the Geordie fans'
vilification of

It was something of a disappointment that there wasn't a big empty space in this morning's
edition of the Guardian's sports section. It would have been the most fitting response to Ken
Bates' decision to ban the newspaper from Elland Road as a result of reports written by David Conn
about the increasingly murky issue of the ownership of Leeds United.

Big Story
The Guardian, and particularly Football Supporters' Federation writer of the year David Conn, have
provided Britain's best newspaper coverage of the ugly underbelly of the finances at British
football clubs across England for quite some time.

Thanks to Blue Days for the nod towards this article in The Times which states we have agreed to
pay £800,000 to Leeds in compensation for the signing of George Swan and Louis Hutton:
Manchester City have agreed to pay about £800,000 in compensation to end their row with Leeds
United over the signing of two teenagers.

Kartik Krishnaiyer is joined by Alexander Caulfied to discuss his recent trip to Leeds and
Manchester to watch two league cup matches.
Caulfield, a Merseyside native has much of his family who support Leeds. Hear about the
supporters of Leeds at Elland Road even in the bad time, their views on Ken Bates, and on former
players Alan Smith and Rio Ferdinand.

Reading some of this shit just makes my brain explode. How on Earth is Ken Bates Leeds'
Chairman? He doesn't own the club? He doesn't know anyone who owns the club? It wouldn't suprise me
if Leeds were actually owned by Harry Potter, or those fucking dogs playing cards in that
picture.

Ken Bates, the hero of small clubs everywhere!
They are after you.
"They" being UEFA and FIFA and "you" being most of the top football teams in Europe.
I am, of course, talking about the massive issue has come of the top European clubs "stealing"
young talent away from smaller teams.

Since when have Ken Bates and Leeds United been the keepers of football morality?
Those little angels of perfection.
When are we playing them in the League this season?
Oh yes - silly me.
They are still in League 1.
And we are in the Championship.

.Just days after Chelsea were handed a transfer ban until 2011 it seems that Manchester United

It could be argued that the greatest condemnation of the Football League's "Fit and Proper
Person" test was that Ken Bates could pass it. This, however, may no longer be the case - not
because of anything Bates himself has done, but because of the serial mismanagement of AFC
Bournemouth's affairs last season – which has emerged from the Football League's explanation for
maintaining the strictest possible transfer embargo on the South Coast club.

In some ways, you almost have to hand it to Ken Bates. He is so obstinate in his behaviour, so
apparently appalled by the concept of acting in a way that is half-way reasonable, that it almost
appears that his self-appointed role in life is to act in a way that nobody with any scruples could
even try to defend.

Some characters in football are just like a bad penny.
They may not be around for a while but they always turn up again eventually.
Ken Bates is one such man.
Now he's been found guilty of libel and has to pay out £50,000 damages plus £1.5 million
costs.
No small sum.

Now the dust has settled and Tom Henning Ovrebo has escaped Britain without being lynched, one
thing has become abundantly clear after last Wednesday Champions League semi-final; neutral
football fans, almost to a man, were desperate to see Barcelona go through. Chelsea fans aside,
no one has been that bothered by the referee's woeful performance.

It comes as no great surprise that there was crowd trouble at the match between Millwall and
Leeds United on Saturday, but this doesn't make another flaring of violence any more depressing.
The timeline for these activities has become fairly predictable. The clubs' supporters spend a week
or two getting themselves worked up on social networking sites and message boards.

Thanks to the millions being shelled out by Premiership teams like Manchester City, Tottenham
and the big four this season, it is easy to forget that English football is currently seized by its
very own credit crunch. Today Luton Town dropped out of the football league for the first time in
89 years in football's equivalent to the collapse of Lehman Brothers last year.

Thank you Pete Kenyon! In a pretty surprising move, Chelsea have brought Ray Wilkins back to the
club as assistant first-team coach.
Wilkins joined Chelsea as a player nearly 35 years ago, eventually becoming the Blues' youngest
ever captain at 18. He spent six years at the club before leaving for dare I say it Manchester
United.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Roman Abramovich's takeover of Chelsea. It was the biggest
in British football history at the time £140 million and, I must say, it has worked out quite
well for the club thus far.

later, Chelsea is now moving into phase 2 of the revolution, with Uncle Phil & Co.

This is not a Leeds-baiting article. Far from it, COS thinks it's a damn shame what's been allowed
to happen to this football club over the past few seasons, which has resulted in a double
relegation, administration, desperation, frustration and now consolidation. Fans of the club
thought that it might be a case of celebration [.

When Leeds United entered into administration last May, they received a ten-point deduction of
their current standing in the Championship and assured themselves a place in League One this
season. It was a highly questionable yet shrewd move by Ken Bates, the team's chairman, especially
considering that in September 2006, the manager at that time, Kevin Blackwell, announced that
within a year the club would be debt free.
