An Unexpected Football League Revolutionary

Pitch Invasion 08 December @ 02:34 PM EDT

When Brian Mawhinney was appointed as Chairman of the Football League in 2003, I'll admit to groaning loudly. I was not a fan of the Conservative Party of the 1990s, and Mawhinney had been in the British Cabinet and was Chairman of the Tories. What football needed was less free market evangelism and some radical moves towards greater regulation; this didn't seem likely to come from Mawhinney.

The Telegraph is claiming that talks between the club and Barry Moat are scheduled and that a deal could be agreed imminently. Newcastle United have confirmed that the now-Championship club is up for sale at a knock-down price of £100 million.

It's no surprise that Mike Ashley wants to sell - he's been trying to wash his hands of the club he loves for months, but has been unsuccessful.

It is said former Chairman, Freddy Shepherd, is among several interested parties - he'll probably be welcomed back with open arms after the mere disastrous period that Ashley has presided over.
