I DIDN'T SEE ANY OF THE ACTION IN JOHANNESBURG THIS WEEKEND BUT THE general feeling
among the online community seems to be that there was enough turgid African-themed nonsense from
men in white shirts last summer, to have to sit through ninety minutes of that parp.
Thank-you-very-much.

Thank-you-very-much. And, also that it's pre-season and we probably shouldn't read too much into
it.
Finally, I am writing about a football match. Not a good match but a match nevertheless.
Tottenham's pre-season tour of South Africa, under the guidance of Kevin Bond and Joe Jordan,
started with defeat as George Lebese's stoppage-time goal earned a 1-0 win for Kaizer Chiefs.
The chaps landed in Seff Efrica this week. And if that fact alone didn't knock you off your
swivel chairs then wait until you hear they've pencilled in an actual football match for this very
afternoon. With linesmen and everything. Northern riot forecasters, The Kaizer Chiefs, primed and
ready for their three ‘o clock appointment in the balmy Jo'burg sunshine.
There's no team news as such ahead of tomorrow's game with Kaiser Chiefs although we already
know that Sandro, William Gallas and Ledley King are out through injury while Giovani Dos Santos is
on international duty with Mexico.
Predictably, all eyes are on Luka Modric and there was a slight doubt over the Croatian but
reports suggest that he has shaken off an ankle knock and is ready to take his place in the
starting line up.
After what seems an eternity in the thrall of Sky Sports News and their incessant pimping of
Modric across London, it's finally time for the boys to pull on their new shirts (they'll be
wearing the more appealing Investec sponsored ones for this competition) and get on the pitch.

Ryan Smith has resurfaced in Spain.
The speedy left winger, who left Sporting Kansas City earlier this season for unspecified family
issues, is reportedly on trial with Real Zaragoza after joining the club at the start of its
preseason camp.

This week in Soccer History: Minnesota Kicks versus Glasgow Rangers, May 26 1976
Contributing Editor Dillon Young
(links posted are to images of the original documents from the era)
The Scottish powers Rangers toured North America in May 1976 with a stop in Minnesota, marking the
first time a professional soccer team in Minnesota played an international squad.
South African football mourns the death of Eddie Lewis. He died of cancer on May 2 in
Johannesburg at the age of 76. The Englishman played for Manchester United, Preston North End, West
Ham and Leyton Orient (1952-1963) before arriving in South Africa in 1970. Lewis coached Wits
University a white team to a famous 3-2 victory over Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs in the 1978
Mainstay Cup final.

This Week in Soccer History: 1976 - Ace comes for the Kicks
On April 26, 1976, the Minnesota Kicks signed South African great Patrick "Ace" Ntsoelengoe for
their inaugural season. During that season, Ace went on to score five goals in his first five games
and became an instant fan favorite for amazing footwork on the field and his shockingly shy
personality off of it.
Eddie Lewis, one of the original Busby Babes, has sadly lost his battle with cancer today. He
was born in Manchester in 1935 and played for Goslings before joining the Manchester United Junior
Athletic Club.
Lewis joined United in 1947 and made a total of 24 appearances, scoring 11 goals. He left United
for Preston and played for West Ham the season the Munich Air Disaster occurred.
On the list of things which have been flung at referees in this, the world of football, we are
likely to find a cornucopia of items. Anything, everything and all that lies in between.
Probably didn't expect piping hot porridge, however. Definitely didn't expect piping hot
porridge.
Yet in South Africa, a referee found himself wiping its gooey goodness from his face after a
match.
Thulani Serero scored both goals for Ajax Cape Town this weekend
South African football's biggest clubs and arch-rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs lead
the way in the ABSA Premiership with Ajax Cape Town close by hoping for them both to slip up in
what could be one of the country's most exciting title races for years.
PARKTOWN, South Africa Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol and Kaizer Chiefs striker Knowledge Musona
have won the Absa Premiership Coach of the Month and Absa Premiership Player of the month for the
December and January period. The announcement was made at the Premier Soccer League offices in
Parktown on Monday.
