All the futbolitos we've spoken to from Argentina (who support Boca
disculpe Independiente fans!) share the same level affection for
Juan Roman Riquelme, who is easily one of the club's most respected players. We
can also reveal that he's a very level-headed hombre, and for that reason, has struck a
chord with many football fans.
Ever since Carlos Tevez's shocking behaviour more than a month ago during Manchester City's
Champions League loss to Bayern Munich, the Argentina has experienced a run of misfortune that
could make any superstitious person cringe in fear. Of course, all this has been brought about by
his own undoing.
Last year three Barcelona players shared the stage at the FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala and that
remarkable scene could be repeated this year as eight Barcelona players have made the 23-man Ballon
d'Or shortlist, with Lionel Messi odds on favourite to win the award for the third year in
succession.

Inter Milan just cannot seem to catch a break.
Inter's early-season woes continued as Wesley Sneijder was ruled out of the club's upcoming
Champions League match with CSKA Moscow as he nurses a thigh problem. Sneijder's absence in
Tuesday's match is a big blow to Inter, which needs points after losing its Champions League
opener against Trabzonspor last week.

Boca Juniors had a disappointing debut in this Apertura Championship, being held to a scoreless
draw by Olimpo last weekend. Julio Falcioni is already under pressure, especially with a possible
presidential election looming, and would love a victory over Union on Monday (8:15 p.

In which Boca Juniors vet Juan Roman Riquelme endures a barrage of close-range gobbage and
spitoonery from a goon in the crowd as he tries to take a corner during Boca's 0-0 draw with Olimpo
at the tiny Bahia Blanca stadium over the weekend...
Said the Boca legend after the game: "People are used to doing this in our country and nothing
surprises you", before going on to complain about the state of the Olimpo pitch which says a fair
bit about the current state of Argentinian football right there.
A worried Checho Batista faced with a must win against Costa Rica
Watching Leo Messi, a shadow of himself struggle against Colombia throws into sharp relief the
magnificent Barca midfield that makes goalscoring look so easy. The Albiceleste should on first
look fare just as well with their squad teaming with the creative talent the likes of Ezequiel
Lavezzi, Ever Banega, Javier Pastore, Fernando Gago, Esteban Cambiasso, and Angel Di Maria.
The 2000 Copa Libertadores quarterfinals (second leg) between Boca and River Plate. The first
leg had gone to their fiercest rivals, 2-1. Martin Palermo came on in the last 15 minutes. It was
his first match after an ACL tear kept him out of action for six months. Boca were up 2-0.
Juan Roman Riquelme lays off the ball for a streaking Christian Gimenez who cuts the ball back
from the sideline.
With luminaries like Don Diego and Juan Roman Riquelme in attendance Boca bade a moist eyed
farewell to the heroic figure of Martin Palermo striding on the pitch in his superman cape.
Sergio Batista is contemplating a proper international send off for Palermo in the friendly
against Albania before the Copa America begins.

It took only three minutes midway through the first half for Boca Juniors to take control of the
latest Superclasico, as the home side came away with a 2-0 victory Sunday in La Bombonera. River
Plate goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo was expected to be a key figure in this showdown between the
two eternal nemeses, and Carrizo played his part in a negative way in the final result.

One of the top matches in all the world this weekend won't be played in England, Spain, Germany
or anywhere else in Europe. It'll be happening in Argentina.
Boca Juniors and River Plate renew their Superclasico rivalry Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.), and
while Boca Juniors hitman Martin Palermo (above, right) has enjoyed a fascinating career with many
memorable moments, scoring a goal in his final Superclasico would certainly be very special.

Most leagues do it through competition.

Blackburn, in their relentless search for a 'marquee' signing, have reportedly been offered the
services of Boca Juniors stalwart (and light of legendary Gol TV commentator Ray Hudson's
life) Juan Roman Riquelme on the cheap.
Riquelme's agent Barry McIntosh (you can almost smell the pinstripes) told the Lancashire
Telegraph:
"I have spoken with (middle man) Jerome Anderson, who is doing a lot of work for Blackburn
Rovers, about a deal for Riquelme and it is being thought about.
