Ever since Amado Guevara was shown the door, I've been clamoring for an actual #10 Creative
Midfielder for our team - to absolutely no avail. That genius Bruce Arena (besides destroying our
pretty good backline in 2007) saddled us with the perenially injured Claudio Reyna, who (as a
defensive midfielder) was absolutely not the creative player we needed.
Hector Rueda Lookalike Wilman Conde is New York Bound - FinallyThe New York Red Bulls,
having just wrapped up Tim Ream's long-awaited transfer to Bolton, didn't waste much time in
finding his replacement, announcing today the signing of Colombian central defender Wilman Conde.
Conde was most recently on the books of Mexican club Atlas, where injuries limited his playing time
in 2011 to just 13 games.

This news had been around for some time. The New York Red Bulls and the Chicago Fire finally
made it official today though. Wilman Conde is finally going to the Big Apple.
The fun part about this deal however is that it is really a few years too late.
Just days after selling Tim Ream to Bolton, the New York Red Bulls have secured the services of
his replacement, signing Colombian centerback Wilman Conde after making a trade with the Chicago
Fire.
The Red Bulls dealt allocation money (which one source put at $150,000) to the Fire for the
chance to sign Conde, who returns to MLS after spending 2011 in Mexico with Atlas.
The Colorado Rapids are shifting their philosophy after going through a front office and
technical staff overhaul, and that change is spreading to the field as well after the club
announced the signing of Colombian attacking midfielder Jaime Castrillon from Independiente
Medellin.
Why have the Philadelphia Union added a scrimmage against Florida Gulf Coast University, of all
places, to their preseason warm-up tour? With approximately 12,000 students including post-grads
and a "noteable alumni" list that consists of a professional monster trucker and Don Carman
(retired Philadelphia Phillies pitcher from the 80's), what put the FGCU Eagles on the radar?

Now that we're through the holidays its time to get back to business. Hopefully KSE will make a
coaching choice this week, as this debacle of an off-season can't go on much longer. More on that
in a moment.
Mendes: Le Dernier MetroCarlos Mendes, the last squad member to have played for the New York
MLS franchise as a MetroStar, was selected by Columbus Crew in phase one of the MLS Re-entry draft
this afternoon. Mendes, Arturo Alvarez and former Red Bull Danleigh Borman were the only three
players taken in the first round, when teams are on the hook for the full amount of players'
contract options.
Juan Carlos Osorio
While Jurgen Klinsmann struggles to find wins or goals with the U.S. men's national team, the
man he replaced is ready to begin his latest coaching adventure.

Former Columbus Crew player David Testo broke a major barrier on Thursday, becoming the first
MLS player, past or present, to publicly announce that he is gay.
In an interview with CBC, Testo said that he regrets not having come out earlier and that the
life of a gay professional soccer player is extremely difficult.
Here's a little non-Sounders content that piqued my curiosity. Thanks to two consecutive wins by
the Vancouver Whitecaps, for the first time in a very long time they're no longer at the bottom of
the MLS table. Instead they've leapfrogged the New England Revolution, who are suffering what is
probably the worst season in their occasionally proud history.
Michael Lewis writes about the challenges facing Richie Williams in getting a coaching job in Major
League Soccer.
Williams has certainly paid his dues as both a player and assistant coach in both college soccer
and in MLS.
Before I go any further, I should make it clear that I do not represent Richie Williams.
It is almost never a mistake for a team to fire a coach. It's like a relationship - once it gets to
the point where you're seriously asking whether you should break up, you should probably break
up.
The mistake almost always ends up being the choice of replacement. In many cases, the choice could
end up being so poor that it calls into question the original decision to can the previous coach.
Despite European leagues winding down and no MLS games until the weekend, there's still an
ecclectic array of soccer on Wednesday.
Between the UEFA Europa League final, Copa Libertadores quarterfinals, a U.S. women's national
team pre-World Cup friendly and Canadian championship, there's plenty of entertaining soccer to go
around.
In 1993, Georgia Tech basketball coach Bobby Cremins was on the shortlist of candidates for the
head coaching position at the University of South Carolina. After much speculation over whether he
would take the job, he appeared at a news conference in South Carolina to confirm that he would
accept the position.

Juan Carlos Osorio was all set to coach the Honduran national team, and looked primed for a
return to the United States this summer in charge of a new team, but Osorio is still in Colombia
and Honduras is still searching for a manager after a dispute over Osorio's arrival date led the
former New York Red Bulls head coach to pass on his first national team job.
Former Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio will not coach the Honduras National Team after all.
Four days after he was appointed, Osorio on Saturday declined an offer to coach the national side
for the CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
The 48-year-old Osorio said he wanted to fulfill his promise to continue coaching Colombian
champion Once Caldas.
Former Major League Soccer coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who turned down an offer
from Chivas USA so he could guide Colombian champ Once Caldas in Copa Libertadores, on Wednesday
was appointed head coach of Honduras' national team.
Mexican coach
Juan de Dios Castillo resigned a little more than a week after
leading the Hondurans to the Copa Centroamericana title and an expected berth in the June 5-25
CONCACAF Gold Cup.

After having his name tossed around the rumor mill in the last couple of months, Juan Carlos
Osorio has a new squad to coach - the Honduras national team.
The former Chicago Fire, New York Red Bulls and Once Caldas coach has been selected to become
the next manager of Los Catrachos.
Daryl Shore
The Strikers announced today that Daryl Shore, 41, will return as head coach of the south
Florida club previously branded as Miami FC. Shore took over the Miami FC head coaching reins
last July and guided them to a five-game unbeaten streak to end the 2010 season.

If you follow the other football, you know about the Rooney Rule.
Chivas USA will announce Robin Fraser as its new head coach on Tuesday, according to the
Salt
Lake Tribune and
ESPN Deportes. The 44-year-old has spent the last four years as an
assistant with Real Salt Lake, where he has helped Jason Kreis build one of the more dominant sides
in Major League Soccer.
The big news is that Chile announced it's squad for the January 22nd friendly against the USA in
Los Angeles. The Chilean football federation has elections January 7th, so this could be the last
squad coach Marcelo Bielsa announces (before he becomes Liverpool's manager).
ESPN's Outside The Lines tackles serious topics that can't be captured in soundbytes or solved
through the pseudophilosophical meanderings of group punditry.
When Juan Carlos Osorio decided to stay in Colombia instead of going back to Major League
Soccer, Chivas USA was left to go back to the drawing board. It turns out they didn't have to look
too far as ESPN Deportes is reporting this morning that the club is set to name Real Salt Lake
assistant coach Robin Fraser as their next head coach.
David Beckham: yadda yadda EPL loan yadda yadda (AP Photo).
I will mark a dozen years of employment at the Daily Breeze Monday by taking the day off so
there will be no column Tuesday.
*I'll leave you with the usual blather out of England that include reports Newcastle United want
David Beckham on loan.
