It's not even August, and Kenny Dalglish has been busier than the Pitt-Jolie's au pair brigade
when it comes to restocking the barren midfield corps that awaited him last January. Well, it's
perhaps disingenuous to call it barren; more like, not stocked particularly well. Like if a $30
dish at a fine dining establishment boasted signature ingredients like soap, anchovies, a box of
Rice-A-Roni, and a plunger.
Over the last week Liverpool FC revealed that new signings Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam
would be wearing the No.14 and No.26 shirts respectively for 2011/12 campaign. They have added to
that update by confirming that Stewart Downing will wear the No.19 shirt formerly held by Ryan
Babel.
55 right-footed (71.4%)
12 headers (15.6%)
8 left-footed (10.4%)
2 own goals (2.6%)
Two thoughts.
First, it helps explain why so many of Liverpool's supposed transfer targets are left-footed. At
least two attacking midfielders/forwards/wingers and a starting left-back (along with perennial
favorite Charlie Adam) seem to top Comolli's summer shopping list.
This is what Hicks and Gillett did to Liverpool's playing squad.
Yes, Benitez had a Redknappian fondness for wheeling and dealing – and had to rebuild right away
despite winning the Champions League in his first season – but an awful lot of that business was
compelled by the tumors' poverty and indebtedness, evident in the number of transfers in the last
two to three seasons.
According to Physioroom, Liverpool have had 43 separate injuries to first team players since the
beginning of August. The above graphic shows only 38 for two reasons. First, there are two
different Gerrard groin injuries listed in February. However, since he didn't play any matches in
the meantime, I'm only counting it as one.

With the resumption of league matches on Sunday after a two-week respite, pre-match questions
remain the same.
I'm reflecting on the scathing post that I put up yesterday and am wondering now if I was too
harsh in my assessment. Clearly, we put on a second rate display (at best). But is it fair and
realistic to expect the players that took the field to perform at the standard that we're used to
expecting from our first team?

Meyer has actually done a Liverpool match before: a 2003 UEFA Cup tie against Steaua at Anfield,
which Liverpool won 1-0.
YouTube is littered with overdramatic Liverpudlian tributes to Torres. To add to the buildup
for today's Chelsea-Liverpool match (kicking off at Stamford Bridge at the top of the hour), here's
one that is a highlight reel of El Niño when he was at the top of his game, in 2008-09 primarily
Liverpool highlights, followed by a coda of Spain national team clips (set to an Akon
soundtrack):
Meanwhile, the teams are in, according to the Guardian's liveblog:
The teams are in:
The Team With Torres: Cech; Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry, Cole; Mikel; Essien,
Lampard; Torres, Drogba, Anelka.
We can all agree, I'd imagine, that £35 million is far too much for Andy Carroll. As has been
suggested, I'm sure Mike Ashley and Alan Pardew were doing cartwheels all over St. James' Park on
Tuesday night until someone sheepishly muttered, 'So...who is going to score our goals now
then?'
It seems to me that Newcastle have snatched at the chance to take a lot of money for a player
that has scored 11 goals in his first Premier League season as a first choice striker.
Roy Hodgson's presentationAfter Roy Hodgson left Liverpool, this question sprung immediately into
my mind: was Roy Hodgson destined to fail at Liverpool? If you look at it, there are few other jobs
which entail a bigger revival needed than Liverpool's. When Roy first joined the Liverpool project,
there were fans burning American flags to spite the incompetent owners, there was a shattered group
of players searching for a saviour, and there was Roy.
