What happens to Jose Torres?

USSoccerPlayers at related • 0 views
By Charles Boehm - WASHINGTON, DC (Sep 13, 2012) US Soccer Players -- Jose Francisco Torres has become the enigma of the United States National Team's player pool. Once a darling of the program and its fans, a leading member of the much-coveted Latino demographic who made the rare and brave choice to wear the colors of his country instead of his father's, Torres' recent fortunes have clouded his place in the larger picture.

So I just got home from today's 2-1 win by the U.S. over Turkey here in Philly. My buddy's car broke down, so I caught the train home, and that told me a bit about how much excitement there is for the upcoming World Cup. On my half of the train car, there were U.

USA – Turkey (2 – 1) Post-Game Thoughts

The second half of this game was evidence of why the first half was so frustrating. At least the good USMNT showed up in the second half. Key substitutions were made at halftime, and hopefully after today's win Bob Bradley is closer to finding his best team. I'm starting to think Jose Francisco Torres if the US is going to succeed in South Africa.

USA – Czech Republic (2 – 4) Post-Game Thoughts

Well, let's start with the positives. The USA looked very good in the first half. I live blogged about how it was important for Jose Francisco Torres to come in and stake a claim for his spot in the midfield, and I was happy to see Jose come in and dictate the flow of the game. His presence on the field really cut down on the long balls from the back that the US team usually heaves forward incessantly.

I realized I've slacked on my World Cup hype duties these last couple months and now that the big event is a month and a half away I need to pick it up here. Today just seems like a good day to talk about the USMNT and who Bob Bradley will call into camp next month.

The Daily News reports this morning, "It appears the rumor regarding Colombian goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon joining the Union is true." Sources say the deal only needs approval from the league.

I would like to take this opportunity to start another rumor: Mondragon's closeness with Juan Pablo Angel (Angel is godfather to Mondragon's son) means that Angel will join the Union.

Consensus regarding the 1-1 draw with England fell mostly in the middle a small number were disappointed with the draw and felt the US should have done better, a larger portion reveled in the hard-fought result, but most reported feeling pretty even-keel about the point.

USA – England (1 – 1) Post-Game Thoughts

This draw almost feels like a win. I shudder to think what a win would have felt like. Could I have handled and processed it? Despite whispers in your ear from your British friends about luck the USA fully deserved a share of the points today. England, of course, dominated play, but the USA stood in strong and had a better chance of stealing the three points after Green just managed to tip a Jozy Altidore strike onto the bar.

You've probably already heard about this, and it doesn't really involve the US squad, but it's scary and relevant nonetheless. A friendly between Nigeria and North Korea was interrupted just after second half kick-off by what's been termed as a "stampede" amongst fans.

The USA's most recent friendly in Amsterdam brought up some very big questions about the USA midfield. With Ricardo Clark and Benny Feilhaber injured US fans were treated to a midfield pairing they'd been asking to see: Jose Francisco Torres and Michael Bradley. Except it didn't exactly go as planned.

With England installed as the clear-cut favorite, the rest will be left to fight for the upset, and likely, second place. The United States have been given a favorable draw and will look to Slovenia and Algeria as teams they should beat, but both countries have offensive spark plugs that do not need many chances to capitalize.
