Manchester United 2-0 Stoke City Premier League 31st January 2011
A penalty kick either side of half-time was enough to give an under-par United side a vital win
at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, a victory that sees them go level with title rivals City at the
top of the table.

Stoke City 1-2 West Bromwich Albion Premier League 21st January 2012
West Brom secured a vital three points away at a blustery Britannia against a Stoke side who
never really got into their stride.
In the wake of Saturday's match against Stoke, much was made of the draw representing a complete
tactical failure by Kenny Dalglish and Steve Clarke. The key failure in that larger breakdown was
meant to be the deployment of three centre backs in a formation nearly identical to the one which
had defeated Stoke at Anfield a year earlier, as in the eyes of many those three centre backs
represented an overly defensive approach when facing a club with so little attacking intent.
Showing that chunky lads can cut the mustard in the top flight 1. Grant Holt (Norwich) He's a big
unit. When he had his moustache he looked more like a rogue DC from a 1970s police drama than a top
footballer. Nonetheless, he's proved he can score in the Premier League. 2. Jonathan Walters

Yesterday we broke down Liverpool's winning goal, and while the focus may have been on Glen
Johnson's run from deep and his fantastic finishing of it, the team effort involved in the buildup
was plain to see. It might be fair to say that most goals, if you dig deep enough, are team
efforts, though often that effort can either be fairly self-evident or, conversely, hopelessly
muddied.

Stoke City 2-3 Queens Park Rangers Premier League 19th November 2011
Icelandic journeyman Heidar Helguson is enjoying something of an Indian summer with QPR this
season. The 34-year-old added another two goals to his season tally in a hard-fought win against
Stoke on Saturday.
Ireland confirmed their place at next summer's European Championships with a 1-1 draw against
Estonia in the second leg of their Euro 2012 play-off.
Already four up from the first leg, Ireland looked to be coasting when Stephen Ward fired home the
opener after keeper Pavel Londak failed to hold Kevin Doyle's header.

Everything that could have gone right for the Boys In Green on Friday night did. Four away
goals, two (opposition) sendings-off and a clean sheet to take back to the Aviva Stadium made
Ireland's play-off victory over Estonia in Talinn the perfect night for the Republic.
Ireland captain Robbie Keane believes their Euro 2012 play-off tie against Estonia is all but over
after their 4-0 first-leg win.
Keane scored twice as his team thrashed their nine-man hosts in Tallinn.
"It is a great result. This game should be over now and if we don't qualify we'll be devastated,"
said Keane ahead of Tuesday's return leg in Dublin.

Ireland striker Jon Walters says he won't be afraid to mix it up with Estonia's defenders
if required by Giovanni Trapattoni during the Euro play-off's.
The Stoke City player is vying for a starting birth with Simon Cox, for Kevin Doyle's place and is
adamant that he will play whatever role he is asked to in Friday's away encounter.

Jonas Gutierrez is often seen running all over the pitch to leave it all out on the field for
Newcastle United but following the Magpies incredible 3-1 win away to Stoke City, the Argentine
acknowledged that the club's strike pairing stole the show.
Summer signing Demba Ba struck a brilliant hat-trick to silence the fortress known as Britannia
Stadium but Leon Best was equally effective in threatening the Potters' goal.
Highlights of Newcastle United's superb 3-1 victory at the Britannia Stadim in Stoke. A second
hat-trick of the season from Demba Ba (12, 40, 81 minutes) along with a superb performance from
Jonas Gutierrez amnogst others sealed the win for the Magpies, and there was also a consolation
penalty for Stoke's Jonathan Walters (75).
Newcastle United's great start to the season continued Monday with a comfortable 3-1 win at
Stoke City. With the win, Newcastle is now in third place in the Premier League.
The Toon Armies hero was Demba Ba who scored all three Newcastle goals.

Match Preview: Stoke City vs Liverpool
Liverpool take the latest step in their Carling Cup campaign tonight when they face the tough
challenge of defeating Stoke at the Britannia Stadium. Having already faced two away trips in the
competition, first against Exeter, then Brighton, the Reds make the much shorter journey to Stoke
in hope of their first win on the Potters' territory since they were promoted to the Premier
League.
Manchester United legend Lou Macari believes that Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish should have been
brought back to Anfield 'long before last season'.
Macari, who played against Dalgligh many times during his playing career at Old Trafford (and
scored the winning goal for Man United against Liverpool in the 1977 FA Cup final) noted:
"I grew up with Kenny at Celtic in the late 1960s onwards, and have kept in touch ever since.
The fourth round of the Carling Cup gets underway, and for Liverpool it means a return to the
Britannia, the site of their first league loss of the season. Stoke's body of work in the
competition is neither lengthy nor impressive, but they got past Spurs during the last round in a
match that only took nine hours, and they'll host a Liverpool side that's already won twice on the
road in the competition.

Stoke City 2-0 Fulham Premier League 15 October 2011
After an utterly dismal first half, this game came to life (ish) in the second-half, with the
home side eventually securing a deserved 2-0 win.
The Cottagers are usually rubbish on the road, so cranky Dutch boss Martin Jol won't be too
disappointed with the result.
Republic of Ireland duo Jonathan Walters and Rory Delap scored late goals as Stoke beat Fulham
2-0 today.
Ireland secured a Euro 2012 play-off spot after a dramatic 2-1 win over Armenia, but it
came at a price as Kevin Doyle was sent-off in the second half.
The striker is now certain to miss the first leg of the play-offs and will need some generosity
from UEFA to avoid a two-game ban.
Scott Heavey/Getty Images (Bleacher Report) Liverpool were dealt a harsh blow when they failed to
convert 24 shots on goal and a dominating 73 percent possession.
Jamie Carragher was caught off balance and out of position, which resulted in Jonathan Walters
receiving a penalty that he converted.
Match Preview: Tottenham vs Liverpool
Liverpool travel to White Hart Lane this weekend looking to bounce back from defeat against
Stoke. Jonathan Walters' first half penalty ensured that the Reds crashed to their first defeat of
the season and they will be eager to avoid a second at a ground which has not been a happy place
for them in recent seasons.
Jamie Carragher came in for criticism after Liverpool's 1-0 loss at Stoke but TEAMtalk's Sam
Nightingale feels he still has plenty to offer.
Carragher brought down City striker Jonathan Walters as the two battled for the ball at the
Britannia Stadium and referee Mark Clattenburg pointed to the spot before Walters fired in the
penalty.

Why Kenny was canny in criticising refs so early in season
Kenny Dalglish responded to Liverpool's first Premier League defeat at Stoke by declaring he
wanted to see referee's chief Mike Riley. Some portrayed Dalglish's post-match comments as a rant
after the 1-0 defeat courtesy of Jonathan Walters' controversial penalty.
Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher admits he's in a battle to keep his first team place at
Anfield.
The 33-year-old's error against Bolton cost the Reds a clean-sheet in a 3-1 win against Owen
Coyle's side, and the defender was again at fault when he was adjudged to have fouled Jonathan
Walters on Saturday, with the Stoke striker converting the subsequent penalty in a 1-0 win for the
Potters.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish shows strain after Stoke defeat
• Dalglish complains about standard of Premier League referees • Liverpool consider lodging
an official complaint For those with ambition and an appreciation of history there are few more
appealing jobs in football than that of Liverpool manager.

Stoke City 1-0 Liverpool Premier League September 10 2011
Liverpool's impressive start to the season came undone at the Britannia stadium, courtesy of a
spot-kick from Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters. However, King Kenny was left
fuming over both the decision by referee Mark Clattenburg to award the first penalty and his
decision not to give one to Liverpool after Matthew "Matty" Upson handballed in his own box.
Walters converts his penalty for Stoke... Despite 24 shots at goal Liverpool could do nothing
yesterday to break through the brick wall of Stoke's defence at the Britannia. The home side put
themselves in front with a penalty early on and never looked back. Tony Pulis' boys continue their
unbeaten run in their fantastic start to the Premier League season.
Manchester United hammered Bolton 5-0, Jonathan Walters' penalty handed Stoke a 1-0 victory over
Liverpool, while Sergio Aguero's hat-trick fired Man City past Wigan and Arsenal picked up their
first win.
Stoke City boss Tony Pulis has expressed his satisfaction at stopping Liverpool from playing after
his side beat the Reds 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium.
The win came courtesy of a contentious penalty after Jamie Carragher was deemed to have illegally
brought down Jonathan Walters, incurring the wrath of Kenny Dalglish after the game, with the Scot
displeased that his side had seen several appeals fall on deaf ears.
Match Review: Stoke 1 Liverpool 0
Liverpool feel to their first defeat of the season as their poor record at the Britannia Stadium
continued. The Reds have yet to win a league game at Stoke's ground in four attempts, and Jonathan
Walters' first half penalty was enough to secure victory for the Potters on this occasion.
Stoke City 1: Walters 21′Liverpool 0
In many ways I suppose I'm glad the stream I was watching kept crapping out what I did see was
the antithesis of the type of performance we'd hoped for from Liverpool, who came up against an
opponent that was not so much interested in playing football as it was looking for a series of
sparring matches.
