Watford reach playoff final on 97th-minute penalty double save and counter-attack winner

Dirty Tackle at related • 3 views

Watford have reached the Championship playoff final after beating Leicester in the most stunning way possible. Leicester took a 1-0 lead into the second leg of the tie and with the aggregate score at 2-2 deep into injury time and Leicester still winning on away goals, they were awarded a penalty for very soft foul/dive from Antony Knockaert.

It’s the final countdown: Summer transfer roundup

Aston Villa Central at related • 0 views

It's a little over 10 hours to go before the rumour mongers and speculation, erm, spasmos take themselves a much needed break. At least for a fortnight or so, then they'll be back with a vengeance, leading all the way up to the perennially underwhelming January window.

Until then, I thought I'd summarise this summer's movements to date, borrowing from the transfers page, and throw in anything that happens during the course of this afternoon and evening.

Broken hearted: Makoun follows Young and Hogg out the exit door

You'll all be aware by now that Luke Young and Jonathan Hogg left Villa, joining QPR and Watford respectively, over the weekend; both signing three year contracts. Although I missed it at the time, Young's move did warrant an announcement, Hogg apparently slipped away in the night.

I noticed during pre-season that Hogg had been removed from the squad pages on the official site, perhaps that's got something to do with it.

Aston Villa 0 Wolves 0: Herd the Man of the Match in bore draw

The fans who stayed away from this dirge fest in droves were the lucky ones; only surprise inclusion Chris Herd and Gabby Agbonlahor provided anything worth getting excited about. The ~12k empty seats generated more talking points during the game than the "action" on it.

There's nothing to say about the first half, it was truly awful.

Teamsheets: Aston Villa vs Wolves

This is a big, big game for Alex Mcleish today. The last of a run of home games and a derby against an opponent that caused his predecessor so many problems. It's also something of a "top of the table" encounter and the winner, should there be one, will get boasting rights over the rest of the league for at least a while today.

Alex McLeish has rung the changes for this Carling Cup clash, but retained a strong side blending youth and experience.

Derby 2 Aston Villa 0: Young side goes down at Pride Park

Two second half goals gave Derby the win in a game missing a lot of our big names, including new boy Charles N'Zogbia, but provided a useful, if uninspiring, run out for a lot of young squad players.

This post is more a stake in the ground to record the result, I managed to pick up very little during what was very much a low key, perhaps even dull, affair.

Asia Trophy squad jet off to Hong Kong: A comparison with past summer squads

Aston Villa are taking 24 players to Hong Kong to compete in the Barclays Asia Trophy and the travelling party are en route right now. As the strength and depth of the squad is a hot topic at the moment, I thought it might be interesting to compare this pre-season tournament squad with the squads from the last couple of seasons.

There is apparently a quote from Alex McLeish doing the rounds this evening which has caused a few knickers to get well and truly twisted. It doesn't take much admittedly, if it's not the colour of socks, it's something else equally earth-shattering. The new gaffer has said something to the effect that he only expects to make one more signing before the season starts.

The annual Hong Kong Soccer 7s tournament is taking place this weekend and Aston Villa are once again competing. It's pleasing to see the official site giving the tournament some coverage this year, so you may already be aware that the squad are currently en route to Hong Kong with Ian Taylor among the travelling party.
