Jonathan Greening was on our radar for some time over the summer, and when he eventually
arrived, on a poorly disguised loan agreement (he's ours after the season), some were concerned
that we had paid too much for an ageing player with no re-sale value.
For one thing, re-sale value is nice, but how often do we actually find players we can sell on
for big money these days?

Everyone thinks Jonathan Greening had a tough debut. But both the Guardian and the Telegraph
show him as having seen more of the ball than any Fulham player in recent memory.   He didn't
do much with it, but was he as bad as people are making out?
By the Telegraph's numbers (it looks like the Guardian were asleep on the job again, given the
picture on the right) he gave the ball away 13 times, which seems like a hell of a lot in the
modern game, but given the amount of the ball he did see, this is probably quite reasonable.

My attention on Saturday evening was drawn to the Coca-Cola Championship, or Division 2 as it
was called up until BSkyB came along, and the clash between recently relegated West Bromwich Albion
and Ipswich Town. Roberto Di Matteo and Roy Keane faced each other as players on numerous occasions
during their careers, with one particular incident in the Charity Shield in 2000 leading to one of
the 11 red cards Keane received during his Manchester United career.

The long and dangerous saga of Jonathan Greening has ended, and now he is a Fulham player.Â
("Greening signs!" says an excited email from the club.)Â Annoyingly, he wasn't registered for
Saturday's game because his agent refused to sign off on the deal until 90 minutes beyond the
deadline, following six hours of haggling over his cut in the deal.

It's a lovely morning here in South London, a fine day for the serious business ahead.
Fulham are without Johnson (A), but also perhaps Dickson Etuhu, whose groin may have been behind
his early withdrawal on Thursday.   This could see all kinds of things happen: Chris Baird,
Jonathan Greening, or something else.

Thanks to Steven for the link -Â nice Dempsey profile piece from FIFA:
Really good stuff. Good kid and good player.  There are some fine goals in that mix too
they might not look spectacular, but there's a lot of skill there.  He's cemented his place in
the team now, I think, and it'll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Will the Baggies bounce back?
The predicted great escape was sadly not to be for West Bromwich Albion, a 2-0 defeat to
Liverpool condemned Tony Mowbray's side to life in the Championship. It seemed a late run of form
was going to provide the springboard for the Baggies to perform another miraculous feat, ala 2007,
but it was too little too late for them as relegation was confirmed on Sunday.

Quite a few talking points from this match Liverpool did not get the four points they needed,
WBA were relegated despite their numerous opportunities, and disquiet in the Liverpool back
line.
I can't remember the last time WBA took all three from Liverpool-partly because I wasn't born
yet, and partly because I would have made great efforts to block such shame from my memory.

2007/8 Review
West Bromwich Albion really should have won last season's Championship in a hack canter. Instead,
they prevailed over Stoke City by a short head. West Brom had a goal difference of +33 and a shot
differential of +223 -- a distance clear of the rest of the division in both categories.

The Premier League is kicking off in a few minutes, with Arsenal playing West Bromwich Albion. I
enjoy watching Arsenal, so I'm excited about this one. I'm going to be making some notes throughout
the match. The Eliminator competition is OFF, unfortunately, as there were only three of us that
showed any interest.
