The Chicago Fire have been relatively quiet this offseason when it comes to signing talent from outside the U.S., but that changed on Friday.

Across the Atlantic, Eredivisie club FC Groningen confirmed it had transferred 25-year-old defender Johan Kappelhof to the Chicago Fire, and he's likely to sign a multi-year contract.

The league's trade window will open briefly on December 11 before the Expansion Draft takes place the next day so the Fire's "protected" list shouldn't be too difficult to figure out given the names attached to guarantees for next year.

The makeover of the back line is nearly complete. The Fire have announced the addition of right back Rodrigo Ramos on loan from Coritiba Football Club in Brazil's first division. The twenty year old has come up through Coritiba's youth system and was a member of the runner-up Brazilian side that fell to Veljko Paunovic's Serbian team in last summer's U20 World Cup.
