While we haven't brought anyone in yet, there have been quite a few exits from Bolton already,
though none as loud as Elmander's. It was rumoured and then announced before the last match of the
season that not only would Elmander not be renewing his contract, but he has already agreed a deal
with Turkish club Galatasray.
Rumors have been flying this week of Daniel Sturridge hinting at a Bolton stay. Based on how
he's started for us, it would be a very welcome move. However, it seems as though people are
reading way too far into a quote of his about how he likes playing 90 minutes and scoring goals
(what footballer doesn't).
We're going streaking! Well, not really. Damn. This match at Newcastle is full of streaks,
however. After that awful mid-season slump, Bolton have won 4 of 5 in all competitions and are
unbeaten in 5 of 6. All of those matches without a loss were accompanied by a clean sheet courtesy
of Jussi Jaaskelainen in the Premier League and Adam Bogdan in the FA Cup.
What was an already thin back line has just been stretched even thinner. With Zat Knight's
injury and David Wheater filling in for him, Bolton are back to having no center backs on the
bench. Then, on Wednesday against Wigan, the Wanderers lost another.
Blame the pitch at the DW Stadium, the pies, or whatever else you want, the fact is that this is
nowhere near our ideal back four.
Having already lost 1-0 to Liverpool at the Reebok on October 31, Bolton will hope to end their
winless run against Liverpool. The last time the Whites beat the Reds? 3-2 winners in the fourth
round of the Carling Cup in December 2003. The last time they won in a league fixture? 1954. Trends
seem to be on Bolton's side this season.
