Taking nine for the team

4
I'm trying to crank out my PE column tonight so I don't have to worry about it on Monday morning, which is a good thing since I'm going to be out and about most of the day. I'm writing a column on the horrendous scheduling by Major League Soccer and how they're playing right through World Cup qualifying. Click to continue reading...

Not holding back

1
John Carver didn't hold back much after Toronto lost to Chivas 2-1 on Saturday.

He said he was "absolutely furious" with his defense and also was disgusted with the league and its scheduling. In fact, he even said Toronto FC asked the league to postpone next Saturday's match against Chivas due to extreme hardship. Click to continue reading...

Half Time: Toronto FC-Chivas USA

2

Two teams with shaky defenses=open, entertaining game.

The teams ended the first 45 minutes tied 1-1, but both could and probably should have had more goals than that.

Toronto FC opened the scoring when Rohan Rickets found a streaking Jim Brennan on the right wing with a piercing ball.

Small atomic device goes off at BMO field, referee shields self with red cards

FC Dallas 2 - TFC 0

This game could be the turning point in the season. Many of the bad things about TFC were on display today, including frustration and violent temper (which in this case go hand in hand). Don't get me wrong, there was lots of good on display, just that it was overshadowed by what happened in the second half. Click to continue reading...

Get out your Richter Scales, the Quakes are in Town!

Another day, another game (or so it seems) for TFC. Tomorrow, cellar-dwellars San Jose pay their first ever visit to BMO Field, in what some fans are calling a must-win game. They cite the fact that we have not won in the past 7 games. Personally, this is an overreaction to me. 2 of those games were meaningless friendlies (Pachuca & Independiente) in which we played with a collection of players nobody had ever heard of (Murphy Wiredu, anyone?

Edson Buddle's exemplary form this season has earned him his first MLS All-Star Game call-up in his eight-year career.

Buddle, whose start to the season was disrupted by yet another in his litany of injuries, - a broken collar bone sustained on the Galaxy's Australian tour - overcame that to record 11 goals in his last seven games, tying him for the MLS scoring lead.

What is this call to glory ? goes that commercial over and over. Too bad that glory is on hold until TFC learns how to handle these road games. What new way to raise and then dash hopes will the team create tonight ? -could be the opener for the next commercial . I guess the call to glory involves patience and wisdom. Vancouver's goal came on a 36th-minute penalty after Jim Brennan was called for holding Vancouver's Jim Clarke in the 18-yard box. Click to continue reading...

Toronto FC hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Canada Day match-up at BMO. The Whitecaps took the lead on a penalty kick in the first half. USA in, Barbados out. Worldwide, that's a tiny part of the story after the weekend's games wrapped up a busy stretch of World Cup qualifying that saw a couple dozen countries' participation come to an end.

CONCACAF (second round, two-leg aggregate, 24 teams for 12 spots in group stage)

The potential upsets didn't happen, though CONCACAF tells us Suriname over Guyana is some sort of surprise.
