Who will Chivas protect this year? (Getty Images)
Yesterday we started our look at the expansion draft and who teams will and won't protect for
this month's upcoming draft. The Philadelphia Union get ten players to pick from and this year will
be as tough as any to predict who will stay and who will be left exposed.

Chivas USA was a surprise early on in 2009, but they faded quickly in the summer months. (Getty

It seems like every season or so we get one club that comes out hot to start the season then to
only fade in the summer. In 2009 it was Chivas USA who was just that club as they went 7-2-3 to
start the first couple months of the season.

Well, my laptop just died so I'm depending on the kindness of coworkers here to blog
(sporadically).
Here's the scenario: if the Galaxy win they'll face the Houston Dynamo at home 8 o'clock Friday;
if Chivas USA wins they'll travel to Houston for a Sunday game.
There's just one change for the Galaxy today: Chris Birchall has fallen ill (nothing serious I'm
told), so Chris Klein replaces him in midfield.

So that was never in doubt right? At least not after the Crew started thugging in July. But the
Crew now owns two out of the three fewest point totals required to win the shield. If they become
the first team to win back-to-back doubles (Shield and MLS Cup), all will be forgiven.
How amazing is it that it took the Chicago Fire until last night to clinch a playoff spot, much
less the number 2 seed in the east?

Another drab, missed opportunity for Chivas USA.
They are masters of the bleeding obvious over at Chivas USA public relations, BTW:
Chivas USA now owns a record of 13-10-6 (W-L-T), and remains tied atop the Western
Conference with the Houston Dynamo and the LA Galaxy with 45 points.

Chivas USA Coach Preki's body language in the closing minutes of this game (off of bench, hands
on hips, hand smacked into palm, etc.) told you all you needed to know about the coach's
frustration and the recognition this was a perfect (lost) opportunity to put the Galaxy and Dynamo
under pressure Sunday.

Sole possession of first place in the Western Conference is on the line for Chivas USA this
evening (they're tied with Houston and the Galaxy, who face each other at noon Sunday, with 44
points at the top of the table).
Chivas has returned to their early season form of late, with shutouts in four of their last five
games just as they had six clean sheets in their first nine outings.

Between the U.S.-Honduras WCQ and fighting female soccer players I haven't been paying a whole
lot of attention to this game.
That's unfair because it's a big game for Chivas USA and their playoff aspirations, while a win
would also likely kill off the Wizards' post-season hopes for good. But I'm also assuming that's
exactly what will happen.

Tomorrow night in LA the Wizards will be facing a must win as they take on Chivas USA at the Home
Depot Center. Should the Wizards lose, their playoff chances go to almost none existent (and will
be completely gone if New England beats Columbus. Basically, there are two ways the Wizards can be
eliminated from the playoffs this weekend.

The MLS Player's Union generally releases the info twice a year to show the pittance many of its
members take home.
The second release is usually pretty much the same as the first for players still on the roster
(although I see Chivas USA forward Justin Braun got a raise from around $20,000 to $36,000, so
maybe he can order a double double instead of a small burger at In-N-Out now), but of course new
additions to the roster since March haven't had their salaries known.

Major League Soccer is now some distance beyond meaningless matches in 2009 - apart from one, which
I'm sure you'll identify - and the playoff spots are starting to become occupied. One or two teams
have slipped badly in recent weeks and they need to pick up their form quickly to avoid their
season becoming a disaster.

This was clearly a match between two teams going in different directions. Chivas was starting guys
like Maicon Santos, Jesus Padilla, and Yamith Cuesta - all who joined the team in August and have
already claimed starting jobs. They haven't been afraid to bench their veterans like Razov,
Galindo, and Marsch and have instead sought out better players.

Ghastly offense (as usual), generally excellent defense (as is customary) gave Chivas USA the
road point today.

game since Eric Cantona.

I guess you could really say its just been a rather slow week in terms of news. Sure rosters
were finalized on Tuesday night for the rest of the year and the league announced their big break
next summer but other than that it's been rather calm in Major League Soccer this week.

MLS rosters are finally frozen. Here's a look at how much each team has changed since March.
Also worth checking is something that can shake up a roster without a personnel decision: the
injury list.
CHICAGOHasn't changed much since the beginning of the season except for the departure of unhappy defender
Bakary Soumare to Europe.

And those words are: That's what I'm talking about!
Last week I was all about "No More Ties!", not because i have a vendetta against neckwear (and a
penchant for lame puns), but because winning teams know how to scratch out wins from adverse
conditions at crunch time. The frustrating game in DC was the catalyst, though it was the third
game in a week played in the aftermath of a hurricane at the end of August in DC's home
stadium.

It's thankfully cooling off here in Carson - the temperature right now is 76 degrees - as Chivas
USA and the Galaxy play the season's third and final SuperClasico.
If Chivas USA wins tonight they would win the SuperClasico trophy because the teams would be
even with four points apiece after a 0-0 tie and a 1-0 Galaxy home win earlier this season.

solid matches this past week and earned three big road points in the process.

MLS teams were busy at the league's transfer deadline as several clubs added reinforcements for

fold. The Columbus Crew added to its already potent attack by signing Venezuelan striker Emilio
Renteria, while FC Dallas signed another attacker in Honduran playmaker Marvin Chavez.
