USA 2014 World Cup Squad Projection Version 1.5 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
It's been a few months since the initial projection and it's changed a bit with several
friendlies taking place. Overall, the core of the team remains the same with the final spots still
unclear. This projection is of what the team (23 man squad) will be for the World Cup (in 2014) and
not during qualifying.
Last night, I was at work and I missed the USA at Panama match on Galavision from Estadio Rommel
Fernandez in Panama City. Too bad, it would have been my first look at lots of young USMNT
prospects making their debut with the senior NT. The starting lineup was Nick Rimando in goal, AJ
De La Garza, Michael Parkhurst, Geoff Cameron, and Zach Loyd in the back, Ricardo Clark and
Jermaine Jones in the

Gabriel Gomez was signed by the Philadelphia Union in late December. Last night was the first
chance Philly fans have had to examine the versatile Panamanian.
In a 1-0 friendly loss to the United States, Gomez played as a calming link between Panama's
back four and skittish front five.
The good news: He was fantastic.
Not to be out-shown by the atrocious work being done in the press box, both the United States
and Panama turned in embarrassingly poor performances in what was, by far, the least attractive
game of soccer in the Klinsmann era. Graham Zusi grabbed the game's only goal in the 9th minute,
lashing home a cross that the US was lucky to see bounce off the back of hapless striker Teal
Bunbury's leg inside the Panamanian area.

It has been a long time coming for the US Men's National Team. A solid three-game winning
streak.
Typically these sorts of things happen around the January friendly time. It certainly isn't the
first time this has happened but with Jurgen Klinsmann in as boss, it is.
The US "Camp Cupcake" roster closed out their camp down in Panama today with a 1-0 win thanks to a
goal by Sporting KC midfielder, Graham Zusi. Like the game on Saturday against Venezuela, both Zusi
and Teal Bunbury started for the United States, while CJ Sapong found himself starting on the
bench. The US got a good start, as Zusi finished off a chance in the 8th minute to give the US a
1-0 lead.
The United States is running out of chances to find some solid form before World Cup qualifying
starts in summer. Tonight, they take on a Panamanian team they really should beat and they will be
returning to the 4-4-2 that Jurgen Klinsmann has seemed so intent on doing away with. Chris
Wondolowski will start alongside Teal Bunbury at forward.
The U.S. men's national team plays its second game in a week, and second of 2011 in Panama City
tonight against CONCACAF foe Panama (8:30pm, Galavision/ESPN3.com).
The United States is coming off a 1-0 victory against Venezuela, but tonight should offer a much
tougher test as the Americans face the Panama side that beat the Americans in the Gold Cup group
stages before losing a 1-0 decision in the Gold Cup semifinals.

Richie Williams, the original Ankle Biter, has been named the new head coach of the USA U17 team.
He had been serving as coach of the U18s, so I guess they are looking for a new boss now.
With the first friendly of 2012 producing a thrilling, though somewhat disappointing 1-0 victory
against Venezuela on Saturday, the U.S. men's national team is now in Panama preparing for the
first tough road match for this young group.
Jurgen Klinsmann scheduled this Panama match with the expressed purpose of testing inexperienced
players in a hostile environment, and the opponent is one who should provide a tougher test than
the one provided by Venezuela.

A report from The Bolton News on Friday quotes Wanderers' manager Owen Coyle on Sebastien Le
Toux, "I've had some decent reports on him. He's very industrious, hard working and looks a very
good team player, which is what I'm all about.
Ricardo FTW!
The US's January Cupcake Campers took on Venezuela's B-minus side Saturday night in Glendale,
Arizona.
And while the run of play favored the States, it was unlikely former scapegoat in Rico Clark who
provided the only nail in the coffin as the US opened their pair of camp-closing games with a 1-0
victory.

Ricardo Clark headed home Jermaine Jones' corner in the 7th minute of stopping time to help the
United States to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Venezuela before 22,403 at University of Phoenix

The American's win was its third in eight matches since Jurgen Klinsmann took over from Bob
Bradley as coach last year.

Jurgen Klinsman, Jermaine Jones and Ricardo Clark. The first a German, and famous at that. The
second a mix of American and German, currently playing his club ball with Schalke 04 in der
fatherland. The third born in America, a defensive midfielder in the 2nd Bundesliga for Eintracht
Frankfurt. Could it be some hidden understanding from this shared German-ness that pushed Klinsman
to pick Clark off the bench, and for Jones to find the late substitute with a perfectly dipped
cross?

In the latest from LA, Studio 90 talk with Jermaine Jones, who joined camp Jan. 14 after receiving
the call-up from U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
US Soccer communications interviewed Jermaine Jones, a late addition to the United States National
Team camp. The USA plays Venezuela on January 21st in Phoenix (9pm ET - ESPN3/Galavision).
If the January U.S. Men's National Team camp was all about wins, adding Jermaine Jones might
have been the correct decision. That has never been the case.
The January camps, instead, have always been about giving deserving, often overlooked, players
in their offseason a chance to impress while their more established European colleagues are in the
midst of their season.
US national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has added Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones to the US
national team roster for the upcoming games against Venezuela and Panama.
Jermaine Jones might currently be serving a lengthy ban for Schalke 04, but that does not mean
he will be without playing games until it is over.
In the midst of serving an eight-week suspension for stomping on an opponent's injured foot,
Jones has been called into the U.S. men's national team camp by head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.
The US Soccer Federation announced on Friday that Jermaine Jones will be joining the US National
Team squad for the January friendlies. Jones is unavailable to his club team after being suspended
by the German Federation for an incident that occurred in the DFP Pokal cup competition. "Obviously
this is a very difficult moment for Jermaine," US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a
press statement.
Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones, pictured above heading into Boa Steakhouse for a bite on
26.12.2011, has been suspended for eight weeks after the American was charged with intentionally
stepping on an opponent's injured foot. After first saying it intended to appeal, the club decided
to accept the penalty instead.
Germany's Federation has announced that Jermaine Jones will have to serve an eight week suspension
for a yellow card offense during Schalke 04's 3-1 loss to Borussia Moenchengladbach on December
21st last year. Jones stepped on Marco Reus's foot, with the German Federation judging the foul
intentional.
Back before the Bundesliga hibernation began, Jermaine Jones landed in hot water for his
hunt-and-stamp on the injured toe of Gladbach's superstar. Rather shameful really, and since then,
their fates have diverged.
Marco Reus got his big money move to Borussia Dortmund yesterday, while Jones netted a two month
suspension for a litany of offenses, prime among them his complete disrespect for the art of
subtlety.

US national team midfielder Jermaine Jones has been suspended for eight weeks by the DFB for
stomping Borussia Monchengladbach star Marco Reus in Schalke's German Cup match on December 21.
Jermaine Jones may have issued an apology for his stomp on Marco Reus' injured foot, but the
German Football Federation (DFB) is having no remorse on the U.S. international.
The DFB has handed Jones an eight-week ban for his actions in Schalke 04's 3-1 loss to Borussia
Moenchengladbach in the German Cup Round of 16.

MLS is scheduled to release the 2012 schedule today at 2pm. We'll post the Union schedule as

Who will the Union play in their home opener? After using some logic based on what schedule
details are already known (the Union open the season at Portland on March 12, play in Chicago on
March 24, play in Toronto on May 26 and September 15 while playing host to Toronto on July 7), The
Goalkeeper writes, "I would not be surprised if it is against the New York Red Bulls, the Houston
Dynamo or David Beckham's Los Angeles Galaxy.
