Lyon 5 Marseille 5 at the Stade De Gerland. November 9, 2009. A nail biting epic with end to end
action. This match will be talked about for years to come.
With L'OM cruising 4-2 it appeared as if the match was done but Lisandro Lopez who surely must
be on Maradona's radar for his late goal scoring exploits brought them back on par in the 81st and
84th minute.

If English giants and 2005 winners Liverpool lose to Lyon in France on Wednesday night their
Champions League dreams could be all but over. Should Fiorentina beat Hungarian outfit Debrecen
(a very likely occurrence) Liverpool will be six points adrift with just two games left.
It makes for grim reading for the Anfield faithful, with their Premier League title hopes in
tatters the Champions League represents a great chance for them to pick up some silverware and an
exit in the group stages is virtually unthinkable.

There's an unstoppable groin-pocalypse going on at Lyon right now and no one is immune to its
devastation. From Reuters:
Olympique Lyon have been hit by a series of groin injuries with keeper Hugo Lloris, defenders
Jean-Alain Boumsong, Aly Cissokho, Mathieu Bodmer, Cleber Anderson, Cris, midfielders Cesar
Delgado, Jeremy Toulalan, Kim Kallstrom and striker Lisandro Lopez all suffering from the same
problem before their trip to arch-rivals St Etienne on Saturday.

Since so much has been said about yesterday's game, I'm not going to go too much into it. I just
wanted to say how proud I am of my team. We've been waiting for this win for a long time. It might
just be the group stages, but the biggest criticism of Lyon has been that they've been unable to
defeat a big team away from home.

Liverpool have plenty of work to do to qualify for the Champions League knockout phase after they
lost 2-1 at home to Group E leaders Lyon.
Yossi Benayoun put the hosts ahead in the 41st minute only for substitute Maxime Gonalans to head
home a corner 18 minutes from the end and Cesar Delgado snatch the winner in added time.

With World Cup qualifiers about to take place, there isn't too much happening at club level. But
there are a few articles and updates that caught my eye.
The biggest news is the medical update on Bafetimbi Gomis. Two days ago at
Guingamp, Gomis collapsed during practice with the France squad.

Liverpool will be without midfielders Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun for Tuesday's Champions
League Group E clash with Fiorentina.
Mascherano is sick and Benayoun picked up a leg injury against Hull in the 6-1 thrashing of Hull on

Mascherano's absence means winger Albert Riera is likely to start.

Red Rants 22 June @ 02:11 AM EST
This will be a short one, and I can't help but point out the overwhelming twisting of quotes to
fit headlines.
First of all there is a quote from Bernard Lacombe, the advisor to Lyon's president, who talked
about clubs being flush with cash. And that it would be difficult to resist a big bid if it came:
"If United want to buy Karim then what can you do?

Lyon blows by Marseille, 3-1 on the strength of two Benzema goals. Juninho adds another in
stoppage time. Sylvain Wiltord scored Marseille's only goal. Jeremy Toulalan and Jean Makoun
imposed their physical presence on the midfield and blunted Ben Arfa and Mathieu Valbuena.
Mamadou Niang appears to have been denied two penalty opportunities after Anthony Revelliere
charged him in the box.

I know I can be annoying with my constant idolization of Jeremy Toulalan, but
this time he's actually done something that has me so horrified and terrified that I had to make a
new category just for this post.
Recently, the club had a photo shoot for their 2009 calendar, which naturally features the
players.

I know I normally do a post match write up after CL matches, but I'm running short of time and
won't be able to do the usual photo and video fest. Plus most of what needed to be said has already
been posted in the comments of this thread. So here are some additional thoughts:
1. Lyon are taking the concept of "the best defense is a good offense" a little too
far.

Remember how I said that China were becoming Lyon's new best friends? Well, it looks like Aulas
takes this BFF business seriously because today Lyon launched a Chinese version of their official
website, thanks to a partnership with TitanSport, a Chinese sports media giant.
Pretty soon OL will be signing token Chinese players a la
Manchester United.

These 3-0 losses are starting to turn into a yearly ritual. A humiliating one.
The game was so bad that Lyon's official website posted a highlight video that was only three
minutes long - usually they are around twenty minutes. Watching it, I realized why. Apart from
Mickael Pagis's three goals, not much else happened.

Blue days at the Allianz Bate and Bayern had the same idea in the second halves of their respective

It's a slow news day, so while we're stuck twiddling our thumbs for Sebastien

Lyon had their first summer friendly this afternoon against Nimes in Albertville. Goals were

their first match in an OL jersey.

For the rest of the month, I'll mostly be over at the France World Cup Blog or on ESPN Soccernet. But I will have a post up tomorrow about the progress of our international players at Euro 2008. There isn't anything to report on the transfer front, but don't worry, I'm still on the lookout for interesting news.

Neither Thierry Henry nor Patrick Vieira were fit to face Romania, so Nicolas Anelka and Jeremy
Toulalan started. France generated very little going forward. Anelka headed one over. Benzema hit
one or two right at the keeper. Gomis, when he came on, could hardly get a touch.
There was a short spell at the start of the second half when France looked ok, but for most of the
game, they didn't look like they deserved any more than a point against Romania.
