World Cup qualifying is in the rear-view mirror, and for the Americans Abroad that means it is
time to get back into club soccer.
After missing international duty due to an ankle injury, Tim Howard should be healthy enough to
start for Everton in possibly the most intriguing match of the weekend when the Toffees host
Manchester United, Howard's former club.

The U.S. men's national team plays its final match of a busy and memorable 2009 today when it
takes on Denmark in Aarhus (2:30pm, ESPN Classic/Galavision/ESPN2 after Ukraine-Greece).
Both teams will be missing several key players, with the Americans playing without Landon
Donovan, Tim Howard and Clint Dempsey (as well as injured regulars Oguchi Onyewu, Jay DeMerit and
Charlie Davies).

The U.S. national team returns to action for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 World
Cup today when it takes on Slovakia in a friendly in Bratislava (10am, FSC).
The Americans are without Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, as well as the injured Oguchi Onyewu
and Jay DeMerit, but there are still plenty of starters who will have chances to show they can play
without the team's top players.

When it comes to friendlies, it's nearly an impossible task to convince an audience that the
stakes are high. And while that is certainly true the day before the U.S.-Slovakia match in
Bratislavia, there is plenty to learn about the state of the U.S. team both Saturday, and next
Wednesday in Denmark.

The Sin: For those of you who were wondering: yes, that is a miniature
inflatable Skeletor. As regular readers know, I have christened Bob Bradley "Skeletor" due to the
resemblance his bony visage shares with that of He-Man's nemesis. I don't mean the nickname as a
slight, mind you, I just think both men share a sometimes wrathful look, which isn't necessarily
a good thing.

The U.S. men's national team takes on Slovakia on Saturday and the match is one of the last
remaining opportunities this year for head coach Bob Bradley to take a look at different players
and positional pairings before the end of the year.
With standouts Landon Donovan and Tim Howard not called in, and with key injuries to Oguchi
Onyewu and Jay Demerit, the squad Bradley will turn to to face the Slovakians will be a much
different-looking group than the ones that helped the team qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

With the World Cup inching ever closer, it's just about time to stop nibbling around the edges
of the U.S. depth chart conversations and start biting into the chewy center of that little candy

Yes, that is no typo. Thanks to a striker pool as thin as a wafer due to both injuries and MLS
playoffs reaching their peak, Bob Bradley has his hands tied when it comes to available players for
Saturday's friendly against Slovakia. Landon Donovan is unavailable because of the Los Angeles
Galaxy's playoff triumph, while a fringe player such as Robbie Findley also misses out thanks to
success.

The U.S. men's national team's European friendlies are fast approaching and we will soon learn
which new faces head coach Bob Bradley will be taking a look at.
Why should we expect to see some new faces? The long term losses of Charlie Davies and Oguchi
Onyewu, coupled with the absence of Jay DeMerit, has left serious voids in the squad.

If there was any doubt about Michael Bradley having returned to his top form, he surely killed
off that uncertainty this weekend.
Bradley capped off his impressive October on Saturday, starting and going the distance in
Borussia Moenchengladbach's 3-2 victory over Hamburg SV.

Oguchi Onyewu had surgery on his torn patellar tendon today, but instead of a three- to four-month
layoff, he will be out of action for up to six months. If he's not able to come back until April,
that's not going to be enough time to get back to match fitness. Between Onyewu, Charlie Davies,
and Jay DeMerit, the USA's chances for a successful summer in South Africa could be over before
they start.

We have had a great deal of discussion this week about officials' bias in CONCACAF towards
Mexico. However, I was a bit disappointed that many American fans see the US as a victim in all
this. The truth be told, the US benefits from much of the same bias, albeit perhaps from different
parts within CONCACAF.
