Jay Heaps is now the new boss of the New England Revolution (photo via Boston Globe)
It didn't take the New England Revolution that long to find a replacement for Steve Nicol. Today
the club announced the hiring of former defender Jay Heaps as their next manager.
The 35-year old Heaps is just two years removed from playing for the Revolution, where he spent
11 seasons.
Congratulations to Jay Heaps, who appears to be the new Head Coach of the New England
Revolution.
The former Duke University and New England Revolution standout would succeeds Steve Nicol, as
reported in the Boston Globe.
Last Wednesday, Revs president Brian Bilello revealed to MLSsoccer.
UPDATE: Guys, this is real. No official confirmation from the team, but...look, you'll
have to trust me. It's real.
By now I'm sure you've all read the big news. The Boston Globe reports that Jay Heaps is set to
be named the next New England Revolution head coach.
As Revolution president Brian Bilello's self-imposed 7 day deadline approaches, we here at The
Bent Musket wanted to take a look at a few of the "serious" names on the short list of possible
candidates. With Paul Mariner re-upping his contract with Toronto FC (amazingly, Mariner re-signed
almost IMMEDIATELY after meeting with the Revs) New England was left with only a few truly solid
choices that made sense, followed by quite a few question marks.

Ives Galarcep writes of why Peter Vermes stands out among an elite list of top coaches in Major
League Soccer this season.
While it certainly can't be argued that standout coaches Bruce Arena, Sigi Schmid and Jason
Kreis didn't once again show why they are some of the best coaches in MLS, and among the best in
league history, but in terms of helping a team reach new heights and helping multiple players enjoy
breakout seasons, it's tough to argue with Vermes as the MLS Coach of the Year.

CARSON, Calif.-- The last time Real Salt Lake and the Galaxy competed for a trophy, it was the
2009 MLS Cup FInal and RSL took the championship. History did not repeat itself on Sunday as this
time they lost to the Galaxy on Sunday in a Western Conference final filled with missed
opportunities.
RSL is done for 2011, now Jason Kreis faces the tough task of protecting 11 players. (Getty

Expectations were high going into 2011 for Real Salt Lake. The club was closing in on a historic
CONCACAF Champions League win and everyone in the league was supporting their efforts. But
injuries, suspensions and the gutting loss in the CCL final to Monterrey changed the course of the
season for RSL.
A little wrong...and very wrong. (Remember, we're all about accountability to predictions
here.)
Becks playoff performance in Game 2 against Red Bulls the key to LA's Cup march...
The Los Angeles Galaxy (4 to 1) was one of TSG's odds-on favorites to win the MLS Cup. They
trailed however the Sounders.
By J Hutcherson - WASHINGTON, DC (Nov 7, 2011) US Soccer Players -- Here are two quotes following
last night's Western Conference title game. "I thought we were okay. It wasn't our best night for
sure." and... "I thought they threw an awful lot into the game, and we told our guys... when this
game slows down it will favor us.
The Los Angeles Galaxy will be finishing its season at the Home Depot Center approximately two
weeks from now.
The only question now is will they be ending it holding the 2011 MLS Cup trophy. The Galaxy took
one more step towards answering that question in the Western Conference Final on Sunday.
The sustained rain we've had this morning for the last few hours in Torrance, just a few miles
down the road from Carson's Home Depot Center, has finally let up, but rain remains in the forecast
under gloomy skies, which unfortunately may limit walkups for a game that's live on ESPN at 6
p.m.
Still, this could be the game of the MLS season so far between two closely matched teams and
with memories still fresh of the last time these two teams met including the post-game
confrontation between David Beckham and RSL Coach Jason Kreis:
Key question: Will be RSL be short two defensive starters for the game?
Today's conference finals see a battered Real Salt Lake team visit the unbeaten at home Los
Angeles Galaxy while the stalwart Houston Dynamo will have to see off the dynamic attack of
Sporting Kansas City at Livestrong Park. In each of the last two years the winner of the MLS Cup
has been the lowest ranked team in the playoffs.

By Sunday's end, the MLS playoff field will be narrowed down to two clubs.
No wild card teams remain in the postseason picture after the overall top seed Los Angeles
Galaxy disposed of the New York Red Bulls Thursday night.
U.S. Soccer released the roster of players called up by Jurgen Klinsmann and there are some
interesting choices. Both Landon Donovan and Kyle Beckerman are on the roster and are apparently
expected to be in camp regardless of whether or not their team makes it to MLS Cup. Reportedly
Klinsmann will be releasing that player after the match against France in order to let them return
to the United States and prepare.
When a perfect game was needed, the Seattle Sounders merely put forth a great game. Saturday's
first leg carried over only one element, the physicality. For the most part it was matched, but in
the end Real Salt Lake advanced from the two leg aggregate series. Two goals were not enough, two
goals were enough for a win and honor.
Our various writers here had a little discussion about what lineup changes we'd want to see. The
thought was to make a lineup card for you that would show a Sounder at Heart preferred lineup and a
Real Salt Lake likely lineup due to the injuries to Jamison Olave and Nat Borchers. With Jason
Kreis not sharing the status of those two besides the decision being held until tonight their side
of the card would be incomplete.
After the Saturday three-nil loss the game is merely at halftime. Leg two involves odds stacked
against Seattle, but there are a few reasons for hope. While the Seattle Sounders will have to
change things up tactically, changes are being forced on Real Salt Lake Coach Jason Kreis by
injuries to the best center defensive pairing in MLS.
There's no good way of putting this: The Seattle Sounders are in a ridiculously deep hole right
now. How deep? Since Major League Soccer went to its current playoff format in 2003, no team has
ever trailed by three goals and only seven teams have trailed by two after the first leg. Heck,
only eight teams have ever trailed by three goals at any point in the entire two-legged conference
semifinals.
Quite possibly the worst performance that the Seattle Sounders ever occurred in the chilly, high
air of Utah as Real Salt Lake netted three goals. Only Kasey Keller prevented that scoreline from
being even greater. To list all of the mistakes that were made will take some time, but sadly it
will happen.
Over the last few days there has been a number of reports coming from various media
organizations (including us!) that has stated where technical director Gavin Wilkinson will be
heading over the off season to scout for players. These locatins include: Colombia, Ghana, Togo,
Europe and the less exotic locale of Los Angeles, CA.

Luis Gil is well aware of the hype. As a 17-year-old whose uncanny skill and composure on the
ball has drawn the attention of such European titans as Arsenal and Real Madrid, it would be hard
not to be.

The Los Angeles Galaxy won the Supporters' Shield, amassing the most points over the course of
the MLS season, thus earning any and all advantages heading into the postseason.
Their reward: two cross-country trips in a four-day span for a two-legged tie against the only
team in the league that can go head-to-head in a bare-knuckles payroll battle.
Union
The Union have not released updated injury information on Zac MacMath as of this morning.
Keon Daniel is listed as part of the T&T national team that underwent light training in Bermuda
yesterday.
Local lad and former Union trialist Jeremiah White is working out with the Montreal Impact as
they look to form a roster for their first season in MLS.

manager Jason Kreis got into a war of words when the two sides clashed in the MLS during the
weekend.
Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis and LA Galaxy midfielder David Beckham got into scuffle after
their game Saturday night. Maybe Kreis was upset that his team lost to the Galaxy and said
something derogatory to Beckham? Whatever he said, ...

Becks clash after MLS match There was finger-poking and tempers flaring aplenty between LA Galaxy
star David Beckham or David as he's known to MLS commentators and Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis.
The pair exchanged words as they passed each other after the final whistle, before Becks decided he
wanted to take [.
I have no idea what Jason Kreis said to David Beckham but my uneducated guess is that it was
something along the lines of "your Moms." Lip-readers, try to prove me wrong.
It's been a week of grinding out results for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Last Saturday, a stoppage time strike by Chad Barrett earned three points against the Columbus
Crew on the road, then three days later, another last minute goal, this time from Juninho game the
Galaxy a 2-1 win over visiting Monarcas Morelia that kept alive LA's hopes of advancing to the
quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League Tournament.

Donning a substitute's bib, Javier Morales went through the motions. Medically cleared to return
to action for the first time in months, Morales paced up and down the sidelines at RFK Stadium,
staying warm in case he was called upon to try and light a spark under Real Salt Lake.
Their Words I felt like they scored on every chance they had which was odd. So, I walk away
thinking I've got a lot of work to do to break down that video and see where the faults lie. Real

Following a loss on the road to Seattle 0-3 and settling for a draw with Chivas USA despite a 2-0
halftime lead VASoccerNews asked via Twitter if Ben Olsen's job as Head Coach might be in jeopardy
should United not manage to make the playoffs for the 2011 MLS Season.
For the sake of a fair debate VASocerNews enlisted the help of a guest blogger,Ryan Keefer, to
argue 'for' Olsen remaining as Head Coach for the Black and Red.

WASHINGTON -- The Los Angeles Galaxy and Real Salt Lake both trotted out reserve-laden lineups
Saturday night, aiming to preserve fresh legs through a congested schedule while hoping to eke out
road results in the thick of the postseason hunt.
Dear leader Brucio is off to New York city and environs and will make his first match at Red Bull
Arena in Harrion, NJ this weekend when the Portland Timbers make their visit. So, you're stuck with
me, Joe the Curmudgeon, for a few days.

At least, I think so.

The MLS playoff picture could become a little clearer this weekend. A couple teams have a chance
to clinch berths while a few others could be eliminated for good. Every club is in action this
weekend, which will be fun.
Real Salt Lake might be the most dangerous team in the MLS playoffs. If they keep their recent
form, situations likely come about that have them as the team to beat.
The impending return of Javier Morales and the continued excellence of leaders like Beckerman,
Rimando and Jamison Olave also raise the likelihood that RSL contend for the cup.
In a match-up that could wind up being an MLS Cup Final preview, Real Salt Lake and Sporting
Kansas City played a physical match that left little doubt about two things.
There isn't that much separating two of the best teams in MLS, and those two teams really don't
like each other.
Happy Friday to you. Several thoughts have been floating through my head as we move into the
weekend. The first is the magic number ten that several coaches have placed on getting to the
playoffs. Ten points and we're in seems to be the vibe. I think I was most encouraged by the recent
comments of Jason Kreis regarding Real Salt Lake's chances.
