Santino Quaranta likely deserved a less abrupt end to his playing career. Instead, he is getting
an unprecedented chance at a new beginning.
After not being offered a new contract with D.
By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (Nov 15, 2011) US Soccer Players -- Five for Tuesday, where Tony
looks ahead to a busy 2012 for the Galaxy, looks back at record goal scorers in MLS, and ponders
the 34-game schedule. Which player in MLS history has scored the most goals at home? Surprisingly,
not Jeff Cunningham, who leads in away goals and game-winning goals.

The last time D.C. United recorded back-to-back league wins, Tom Soehn was the coach, Josh Wicks
was in goal, and the attack was led by Ben Olsen, Christian Gomez, Luciano Emilio and Jaime
Moreno.
That was June 2009. Needless to say, a lot has changed for United and now-coach Olsen in the
past 27 months, but the lack of any sort of winning streak has continued.

STARTERSThe day has finally come when Jeff Cunningham is the new MLS all time leading goal scorer. He
buried a Penalty Kick on Saturday against Seattle for career goal #134 and finally surpassed Jaime
Moreno's record.
Hurricane Irene could delay some MLS games this weekend but could not stop the teams playing
from putting out some excellent performances. In fact, there were two sets of winners from
yesterday's matches: the Western Conference and the teams that did not play. While the West
didn't get a clean sweep due to Chicago's home win over Colorado, the impressive wins by Dallas,
Real Salt Lake, and Seattle show that their conference is still the class of the league.

An impressive hat-trick from Lamar Neagle sealed a big result for Seattle coach Sigi Schmid in a
wild 6-2 victory over Eastern Conference top dogs Columbus Crew.
Columbus, missing Julius James through suspension, elected to replace the defender with Rich
Balchan.
D.C. United comes into town on Thursday, August 18 to take on the Chicago Fire at 8:00 PM CST.
In order to get some insider perspective on the current edition of this long-time rival, we
exchanged three questions with Martin Shatzer of Black and Red United. His answer to my first
question is below and the rest of the five questions in the exchange are after the break.
- Dwayne De Rosario is the best kind of All-star, the inactive kind. He'll be
recognized as one of the league's top performers, get a nice little bonus, but won't have to miss
any D.C. practices to go play an exhibition game. Which is certainly a good thing as he has only
been with his current teammates for about a month now.
For the second straight U.S. Open Cup game, the Richmond Kickers (the only non-MLS club left) beat
an MLS team. This time the Kickers went into Livestrong park and came away victorious with a 2-0
win...

I hate DC. It has nothing to do with politics. My hatred started in 1996, and I can pinpoint it to
a precise moment on October 2, 1996. The four regular season games were intense, and a rivalry had
begun to emerge. The joy of shootout victory, courtesy of eleventh-shooter Peter Vermes (DC
protested he shot out of sequence) will always remain a most cherished memory, when victory there
seemed our rightful legacy, carried over from a decade's absence of soccer at the Swamp.
Last night Jeff Cunningham scored to move into a tie for the career MLS scoring record and move
ahead of Brian McBride to become the Columbus Crew's all time leading goal scorer. The former is a
record which will, in all likelihood, one day belong to Landon Donovan, but Cunningham would be a
fine player to overtake Jaime Moreno and make the record his own.

After a two-month slump caused by a combination of injuries, international absences and
inconsistent play, a nearly 100 percent New York Red Bulls squad reminded MLS just how lethal it
can be Wednesday, dismantling Toronto FC for a 5-0 win.
MLS fans were treated to four games last night instead of the usual one or two, as the schedule
makers begin to crowd in a few more league games in anticipation of international friendlies and
late-season CONCACAF Champions League matches. In a cool twist, all four had some playoff
implications as the results had a definite impact on positioning for the playoffs and may prove
critical down the stretch (although with ten teams making the playoffs that is an easy statement to
make).

Jeff Cunningham couldn't have chosen a better time to make MLS history.
The Columbus Crew striker scored in the final minute of Wednesday's clash with Vancouver to give
the Crew a 1-0 victory. Cunningham is now tied with Jaime Moreno as the all-time MLS goals leader
with 133.
When you think of Bolivian football it's hard to look past the name Jaime Moreno. One half of
the lethal Etcheverry-Moreno partnership in the 90's that saw DC dominate the league, Moreno also
spent time in England with Middlesbrough. Now coaching DC United's next generation, he took time
out to talk us through a glittering career on the field as well as what he tries to teach his
players off it.

In the off-season the Chicago Fire made the promise to Section 8 Chicago that if Section 8 had
over 800 season tickets before the season started, the team would cover the fan buses for the
Columbus road trip. The board, volunteers, and other friends of Section 8 all came together to not
only match that mark but get the Section over 1,000 season tickets.
The Columbus Crew have a knack for late game heroics recently. This past weekend it was Rich
Blachan grabbing a goal late in stoppage time to salvage a tie with the Red Bulls. Last night it
was a furious second half rally full of controversy that saw home fans booing the game-tying goal
and Will Hesmer playing the hero late in stoppage time.
As you can probably tell by the title, today's "Timbers Tid Bits" edition will feature a number
of power ranking links from various sources. While I don't really like to participate in power
rankings personally, I can see why others like to use them as a quick snapshot of how the team is
fairing recently.
This past weekend was huge for the Portland Timbers. Despite losing a reserve game, our primary
team came away with a point on the road against an overtly hostile team and atmosphere. These puts
as being tie, once again, with the Seattle Sounders with 14 points apiece. The Timbers do still
have two games on Seattle however.
Washington, D.C. (May 5, 2011) - D.C. United announced today that the club will
launch a D.C. United Under-23 team featuring top collegiate players. Coached by D.C. United legend
Jaime Moreno, players will play and learn from one of the most accomplished individuals in MLS
history. Moreno will be assisted by Academy coaches Judah Cooks and Nolan Sheldon, along with
former United U-20 Head Coach Dafydd Evans.

Jeff Cunningham got the perfect opportunity for an historic goal.
His close-range open shot, off a brilliant back flick from teammate Emilio Renteria in the 61st
minute, missed wide. A goal would have put Cunningham into a tie with Jaime Moreno for first place
all-time in goals in MLS history, and would have tied him for the Columbus Crew franchise record
for goals.

WASHINGTON - Moments after D.C. United's dismal 2010 campaign came to an end with a 3-2 loss to
Toronto FC in late October, then-interim coach Ben Olsen suggested that the club needed to inject
some new blood into its locker room, a sentiment made all the more pertinent by the departure of
captain Jaime Moreno, who played his final game in a D.

1-How long have you been a DC United fan?
Since the very beginning! In '96 I missed only 1 game the whole season. I've been to 3 of the 4
championship games, missing only the one in LA.
2-What made you want to follow DC United?

After weeks of speculation, Caleb Folan is finally a member of the Colorado Rapids.
The Irish international and former Hull City striker agreed to a deal with the defending MLS Cup
champions to improve the team's depth at forward, which will continue to grow when Mac Kandji
returns from his ACL injury.
Tonight is the first competitive game of the 2011 MLS season, as RSL visits Columbus for the first
leg of the CCL quarterfinal. That's also the first chance to add a couple of goals to the all time
total, one that is rapidly nearing a huge milestone: 10,000 goals. Let the countdown begin! I'll be
updating the progress every so often, like I did last year for the 1,500th player (Tyler Deric,
remember?
Recently, Travis Clark of MLSSoccer.com wrote a piece about 247GK owner (our sponsor) and former
MLS goalkeeper, Mike Ammann.
My daughter trains with Mike and the rest of his professional staff from 247GK in Dulles,VA. At her
last session she was surprised to be taking shots by none other than former D.
My first encounter with DC United came in 2004. The arrival of Freddy Adu onto the world stage
gained his club extra publicity. A year later Ryan Nelsen joined Blackburn Rovers from the
Washington club, and at the time I questioned if someone from MLS could cut in England especially
as he joined Rovers as a 28 year old.

Jeff Cunningham is returning to Columbus after all.
Cunningham, the second-leading goal scorer in Major League Soccer history, and the Crew agreed
on a multi-year contract on Friday, more than a month after Columbus secured the striker's MLS
rights in the Re-Entry Draft.
MLS has undergone a pretty drastic transformation right before our very eyes this offseason, one
that has left me asking, "Where have all the stars gone?" alla Hershey's Cookies and Cream
commercials circa 1998. Many of the league's big name stars have hit the road for various
reasons, leaving behind an opportunity for many of the leagues budding young talents to take their
place.
At 31 years old, Nick Rimando is the elder statesman in a January camp where the average age is
just over 23 years old. But for goalkeepers, with age comes the experience that is the foundation
of success at that position. The California native has seen a lot since being drafted in 2000, and
comes into this cap physically fit and with his usual calm mentality.
Happy New Year to all our readers and best wishes in 2011!
The past year was a big one for American soccer. A good but not great World Cup run, a
highlight goal from Landon Donovan, and the controversial rehiring of Bob Bradley after the World
Cup. A first MLS Cup win by Colorado, the signings of Rafa Marquez and Thierry Henry by New York,
but maybe more importantly the rise of young players like Tim Ream, Teal Bunbury, Juan Agudelo, and
Andy Najar.
